Book excerpt: Economic development transforms a traditional dual-system society into a productive framework in which everyone contributes and from which receives benefits accordingly. Economic development occurs when all segments of the society benefit from the fruits of economic growth through economic efficiency and equity. Economic efficiency will be present with minimum negative externalities to society, including agency, transaction, secondary and opportunity costs. An economic development plan is a carefully built framework that's long-term in scope. It's used to help communities across diverse situations. When planning for economic development, the goal is to create and maintain a strong, vibrant local economy. Local government economic development planning is part of a region's overall economic development strategy and involves intergovernmental coordination. The economic development plan provides a comprehensive overview of the economy, sets policy direction for economic growth, and identifies strategies, programs, and projects to improve the economy. Economic planning, the process by which key economic decisions are made or influenced by central governments. It contrasts with the laissez-faire approach that, in its purest form, eschews any attempt to guide the economy, relying instead on market forces to determine the speed, direction, and nature of economic evolution. Finally, the author reminiscences on the excitement that was aroused during the initial period of development planning as well as decline in the expectations from the planning process and its importance. This book imparts the basic information about the economic development and planning of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional economic development has attracted the interest of economists, geographers, planners and regional scientists for a long time. And, of course, it is a field that has developed a large practitioner cohort in government and business agencies from the national down to the state and local levels. In planning for cities and regions, both large and small, economic development issues now tend to be integrated into strategic planning processes. For at least the last 50 years, scholars from various disciplines have theorised about the nature of regional economic development, developing a range of models seeking to explain the process of regional economic development, and why it is that regions vary so much in their economic structure and performance and how these aspects of a region can change dramatically over time. Regional scientists in particular have developed a comprehensive tool-kit of methodologies to measure and monitor regional economic characteristics such as industry sectors, employment, income, value of production, investment, and the like, using both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis, and focusing on both static and dynamic analysis. The 'father of regional science', Walter lsard, was the first to put together a comprehensive volume on techniques of regional analysis (Isard 1960), and since then a huge literature has emerged, including the many titles in the series published by Springer in which this book is published.

Its aim is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to contemporary thinking about locally based economic development, how growth can be planned and how that development can be realized. This book: • Provides students with a thorough understanding of current debates around local and regional development and how that body of work can assist them in helping communities grow; • Equips students with a ‘toolkit’ of strategies that enable them to both plan for development and deliver that development through their professional lives; • Offers a roadmap for economic development that helps students make sense of place-based development by providing a ‘meta narrative’ of how regions grow and how those processes can be enhanced. This integrating perspective will be organized around the concept of competitiveness and how that concept can be understood and operationalized in various ways; • Aims to improve the performance of economic development agencies by providing current and future staff with a better set of strategies that are more appropriate to their needs; • Socializes students into the world of economic development planning, providing them with an entry point into a rewarding career; • Introduces students to a range of techniques essential to success in economic development planning. In addition to a wealth of case studies and pedagogical features, the book is also complemented by online resources. In offering a full toolkit of economic development knowledge, techniques and strategies, this text will thoroughly prepare students for a career in urban planning, transport planning, human geography, applied economic analysis, geographic information systems, and/or work as an economic development practitioner.

Book excerpt: Forward-looking communities have attained a competitive edge by strengthening clusters of related and supporting industries, not courting individual firms. How will your community know which clusters to strengthen as it negotiates this fundamental shift in development strategy? This book shows you how to conduct local economic analysis to support such strategic planning decisions. You'll learn how to use basic economic analysis techniques to analyze changes in the local economy and evaluate the signifigance of these changes for economic development policy. They show how to structure an analysis; assess local economic performance; analyze the structure and dynamics of a local economy; evaluate local growth prospects; assess local human resources; evaluate nonlabor resources; and link analysis to strategic planning. Understanding Your Economy also includes a summary of data series and sources that will trim hours from your search for information necessary to conduct your analysis. Understanding Your Economy does not assume an extensive background in statistics or data management. It can serve as a stand-alone manual for anyone who wants to learn more about the functions and dynamics of an area's economy.

The articles included in the book present a comprehensive analysis of the problems of adaptation of traditional and new methods of operational and project management, development of technologies for business process and supply chain management, development trends in financial economy discussed both on a global scale and in the context of sustainable socio-economic development at the meso-level of regions and industries, which not only reveals the nature of the ongoing processes, but also demonstrates their specifics in industry, agriculture, service industry in Russia, CIS countries, Europe, and China. Particular attention is paid to business education in the new economic realities. The polemical focus of the above-mentioned issues in conjunction with the accuracy of the presented analytics makes it possible to come to unconventional, though practically realizable solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite strong U.S. and Canadian economies, economic development remains an important local governmental function, partly to alleviate the persistent poverty that plagues some areas and partly to compete with the activities of neighboring local governments. Those cities, metropolitan areas, rural regions, and states that do not plan effectively lose the battle for economic survival. Local economic development has become a complex and challenging field, with increasing numbers of planners specifically trained for the task. Providing a useful guide for planners and students of planning, this revised and updated edition of Lyons and Hamlin's 1990 book offers a framework for formulating an economic development plan for a local community. Stating that economic development planning continues to focus too narrowly on job creation at the expense of long-term goals, the authors focus on the secondary and long-term effects of local development activities. Job creation, they claim, should be the end product of a well-considered, comprehensive, rational approach to economic development. The book looks at the objectives of economic planning, offering a broad conception of them, and considers the information needed to plan effectively. following a discussion of public-private partnership tools in the U.S., the book shows how to translate objectives and data into a program of action, then closes the loop of the planning cycle with a description of program evaluation.

The depth and excellence of the numerous topics examined reflects effective networking between the scholars involved, their analyses of approaches, problems and potentials of cities on the numerous continents, and the continuing role of the Global Urban Competitiveness Project in encouraging the development of methodologies and data helpful in understanding the hard and soft determinants of the growth and decline of cities.' – Pierre-Paul Proulx, Université de Montréal, Canada 'This collection of essays provides a rich assortment of methods used to investigate the complex economic, social, environmental, demographic and political systems in cities throughout the world. It gives researchers, lecturers and students a useful taste of the different ways of studying these phenomena in diverse urban settings.' – Ivan Turok, University of Glasgow, UK In this timely Handbook, seventeen renowned contributors from Asia, the Americas and Europe provide chapters that deal with some of the most intriguing and important aspects of research methodologies on cities and urban economies. The Handbook comprises five parts: methodology, continental distinctions, positioning cities, planning for the future, and urban structures. The 'methodologies' section includes interviews, empirical and theoretical approaches whilst 'continental distinctions' offers contributions on China, North America, Europe, Latin America and South Africa. 'Positioning' treats cities in the international context and relates them to economic and administrative spaces whilst 'planning' includes general strategic economic planning, as well as the experience of individual cities. Finally, the 'structures' section refers to contextual and situational aspects of urban development. Providing a comprehensive study of urban development and competitiveness, this Handbook will strongly appeal to students wishing to gain a deeper understanding of research methods in urban economics, urban studies and planning.

Book excerpt: This book will discuss the economies of both strong and weak municipalities (i.e. micro economics). The purpose of this book is to focus on the development of both struggling and strong municipalities. It will argue that both of these types of municipalities need improvement. Particularly, these municipalities need local economic development (LED). This book will also cover and discuss these leadership methods: strengthening communication between leaders, employees, managers, and clients; listening and learning from others; leaders and employees taking responsibility for their actions; mapping and brainstorming; establishing trust and loyalty inside and outside the work environment; and keeping Christ s commandments and traditions. Lastly, this book will discuss the improvements that need to be made in order for municipalities to continue to be strong for future generations. The majority of these issues can be solved if the organization incorporates: strategic foresight; strategic thinking; strategic planning; creativity; strong, positive leadership, and love. Incorporating all of these ideas will create economic prosperity. Author Bio: Dr. Naseeb Michael Kaleel just recently graduated at Regent University School of Business and Leadership where he studied Strategic Leadership. His focus was business and economics. Dr. Kaleel also received two master degrees in Law and Public Policy in 2011. In 2008, Dr. Kaleel graduated from Youngstown State University (YSU) with a bachelor s degree in History. He also minored in public policy while studying at YSU. Dr. Kaleel is currently working at his family s food distributing warehouse, Kaleel Brothers INC. as a salesman.
