Download or read book Planisphere for Latitude 42 North written by George Philip's Ltd and published by Philip's. This book was released on 2001-05-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look to the stars--and find them, at any evening hour, any season of the year! And don't forget the planets, too. You'll feel as if you have a personalized tour guide to outer space (as seen in the northern latitudes) when you set the date and time on this movable disk. Hold the planisphere directly overhead and with the midnight mark pointing north. All the constellations on the map will then come into focus for you. Just begin by locating one, and move along the sky, helped by the lines joining the stars on the chart. Finding the planets takes a little more work, because they all revolve at different rates and can't be plotted permanently; but the tables will show you how to figure out the position of the brightest (Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn). Bonus: you can calculate sunrise and sunset for any particular day!

Book excerpt: Invaluable for both beginners and advanced observers, Philip's Planisphere (Latitude 42 North) is an essential travel accessory for astronomy enthusiasts visiting the USA, Southern Europe or Northern Japan, for example. To use this practical hour-by-hour tracker of the stars and constellations, you simply turn the oval panel to the required date and time to reveal the whole sky visible from your location. The map, by the well-known celestial cartographer Wil Tirion, shows stars down to magnitude 5, plus several deep-sky objects, such as the Pleiades, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and the Orion Nebula (M42). Because the planets move round the Sun, their positions in the sky are constantly changing and they cannot be marked permanently on the map; however, the back of the planisphere has tables giving the positions of Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn for every month until 2020.The planisphere is supplied in a full-colour wallet that contains illustrated step-by-step instructions for how to use the planisphere, how to locate planets, and how to work out the time of sunrise or sunset for any day of the year. It explains all the details that can be seen on the map - the magnitudes of stars, the ecliptic and the celestial coordinates. In addition, the section 'Exploring the skies, season by season' introduces the novice astronomer to the principal celestial objects visible at different times of the year. Major constellations are used as signposts to navigate the night sky, locating hard-to-find stars and some fascinating deep-sky objects. The movement of the stars is also explained.

Stargazers will be able to locate planets, stars, constellations, globular clusters, nebulas, galaxies and other celestial wonders. Other features include: At-a-glance coordinates for locating the brightest objects in the sky Planetary tables to locate Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn Times of sunrise and sunset for each day Declination and right ascension scales The ecliptic path. Book Synopsis Newgrange Speaks for Itself by : Jacqueline Ingalls Garnett
Download or read book Newgrange Speaks for Itself written by Jacqueline Ingalls Garnett and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firmly grounded in the structure and engravings of Newgrange, this book offers several revolutionary insights into both its science and its religious faith. Forty carved motifs are explained as emblems of site features which the builders provided to ensure an afterlife for the dead, including the nine carved rungs in the passage, the "leak" that delivered water to the chamber bowl and slab, the two round sockets in the rim of the bowl, the stone marbles found in the chamber, and the starry outviews originally possible through the chamber vault. The author argues that some of Michael O'Kelly's discoveries suggest Newgrange may have been retooled when precession displaced the targets of those outviews. The book explores the builders' competent astronomical and mathematical skills, and shows how these were combined with an afterlife faith capable of engaging both mind and spirit. A radical analysis of five related motifs exposes unexpectedly sophisticated characteristics of the Newgrangemen's mode of expression. The rich cluster of afterlife agencies identifiable at Newgrange, unique as a fingerprint, can also be recognized in certain myths, fairytales, religious traditions, and superstitious observances. Mrs. Garnett shows how these resources may shed light on the heretofore almost completely unknown afterlife faith and practice of these stone-age people.

Download or read book Starwatch written by Robin Kerrod and published by Barrons Educational Series. This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neophyte sky watchers who try to use standard, often complex astronomical charts and maps can often end up confused and frustrated. This beautifully illustrated volume makes identifying heavenly objects easy. All viewers need to supplement this book when they go starwatching is a simple red-lens flashlight and a small telescope. If unavailable, a pair of binoculars, or even the naked eye will do. Guided by Starwatch, readers can observe the sky month-by-month as it completes its annual cycle. The author shows how to locate such constellations as Ursa Major (the Big Dipper), Orion, Gemini, Pegasus, and many others. He also points out the major stars in each constellation, noting fascinating facts about many of them. For instance, Orion’s main star, Betelgeuse, is approximately 250 times bigger than our own Sun—a comparison parallel to the difference between a marble and a beach ball. He also tells how to find the planets in the night sky, see Jupiter’s moons with ordinary binoculars, and even how to find those deep-space objects called nebulae on clear dark nights. Facts and illustrations fill every page of this fascinating book, which is divided into separate chapters for every month of the year. It’s an exciting introduction to astronomy for both kids and adults, and it features more than 300 vivid color illustrations.
