Book excerpt: "The Planetary Atom recreates the life and times of an unjustly neglected scientist: George Adolphus Schott. A contemporary of Rutherford and Bohr, Schott worked on a fundamental problem related to the birth of Quantum Mechanics: the Planetary Atom, proposed by Rutherford to account for one of his most famous observations. Schott challenged Rutherford's model and proved mathematically that Rutherford's idea was incompatible with the fundamental properties of physics. Unfortunately, Schott's work was cast aside because of the success of Niels Bohr in accounting for the structure of the atom. Much later, it was discovered that Schott identified a crucial point and had, in fact, predicted some significant effects but, nonetheless, his contribution was forgotten and his prediction of synchrotron radiation was attributed to another. In this largely imaginary biography, the author recreates Schott's interactions with eminent scientists of the period, seeking to rehabilitate a criminally forgotten British researcher and restore him to his rightful place as one of the great scientists of his time"--

Of course, we are all aware of the major contributions made by legendary researchers such as Ernest Rutherford, who first set up the model known as 'the planetary atom'. Book excerpt: The texts of Boris Hessen and Henryk Grossmann assembled in this volume are important contributions to the historiography of the Scienti?c Revolution and to the methodology of the historiography of science. They are of course also historical documents, not only testifying to Marxist discourse of the time but also illustrating typical European fates in the ?rst half of the twentieth century. Hessen was born a Jewish subject of the Russian Czar in the Ukraine, participated in the October Revolution and was executed in the Soviet Union at the beginning of the purges. Grossmann was born a Jewish subject of the Austro-Hungarian Kaiser in Poland and served as an Austrian of?cer in the First World War; afterwards he was forced to return to Poland and then because of his revolutionary political activities to emigrate to Germany; with the rise to power of the Nazis he had to ?ee to France and then Americawhilehisfamily, whichremainedinEurope, perishedinNaziconcentration camps. Our own acquaintance with the work of these two authors is also indebted to historical context (under incomparably more fortunate circumstances): the revival of Marxist scholarship in Europe in the wake of the student movement and the p- fessionalization of history of science on the Continent. We hope that under the again very different conditions of the early twenty-?rst century these texts will contribute to the further development of a philosophically informed socio-historical approach to the study of science.

Book excerpt: This book presents the most important ideas behind Bayes’ Rule in a form suitable for the general reader. It is written without formulae because they are not necessary; the ability to add and multiply is all that is needed. As well as showing in full the application of Bayes’ Rule to some quantitatively simple, though not trivial, examples, the book also convincingly demonstrates that some familiarity with Bayes’ Rule is helpful in thinking about how best to structure one’s thinking.

Book excerpt: When it was published in 1543, Copernicus's new astronomy had an enormous impact on intellectual life in early modern Europe, but the reception of his new ideas differed fundamentally from one country to another. Rienk Vermij discusses how—unlike in Roman Catholic lands—discussion in the heavily Calvinist Dutch Republic was initially dominated by humanist scholars who judged Copernicus's work on its mathematical merits. Yet even in this environment, it could not escape eventual philosophical, religious, and political controversies. This book shows how Copernicus's astronomy changed from an alternative cosmology into an established worldview in the Dutch Republic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antoine of Oregon : A Story of the Oregon Trail The author of this series of stories for children has endeavored simply to show why and how the descendants of the early colonists fought their way through the wilderness in search of new homes. The several narratives deal with the struggles of those adventurous people who forced their way westward, ever westward, whether in hope of gain or in answer to "the call of the wild," and who, in so doing, wrote their names with their blood across this country of ours from the Ohio to the Columbia. To excite in the hearts of the young people of this land a desire to know more regarding the building up of this great nation, and at the same time to entertain in such a manner as may stimulate to noble deeds, is the real aim of these stories. In them there is nothing of romance, but only a careful, truthful record of the part played by children in the great battles with those forces, human as well as natural, which, for so long a time, held a vast 4 portion of this broad land against the advance of home seekers. With the knowledge of what has been done by our own people in our own land, surely there is no reason why one should resort to fiction in order to depict scenes of heroism, daring, and sublime disregard of suffering in nearly every form.

Book excerpt: The anthology Global Popular Music features readings that examine the commonalities and differences among different popular music traditions in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. The text explores the ways in which each tradition developed, evolved, eventually disseminated, and how they gained global reach. The book begins with an introduction to global and popular music and answers the all-important question: what is pop? The readings that follow include both material evidence and historical narrative to provide students with greater awareness of how popular music has evolved throughout different cultures. The selections explore various musical traditions, including the blues, samba-reggae, mariachi, afro-pop, bhangra, K-pop, and rap, among other styles of music, all written by renowned and revered musicologists in the field. Compelling and complex in nature, Global Popular Music is an excellent supplementary resource for courses in world music, as well as any course that examines popular music in a global context.
