Coverage includes tensile properties as indicators of fracture behavior; notched-bar impact and related tests for toughness; notch toughness and sensitivity; tear resistance; fracture toughness; the interrelation of fracture characteristics; toughness at subzero and elevated temperatures; subcritical crack growth; and metallurgical considerations in fracture resistance. Most of the data is presented in only the English/engineering units, contrary to normal ASM International and Aluminum Association, Inc. policies. The author's credentials are not stated. c. Book excerpt: Fracture of Metals is part of a multivolume treatise that brings together the fundamentals for critical evaluation of the different theories and experimental findings on brittle fracture. These results, together with their design implications, should be made available to professional engineers, students, and researchers in industrial organizations, educational and research institutions, and various governmental agencies. Seven major areas are covered in this treatise on fracture. They are: (1) microscopic and macroscopic fundamentals of fracture; (2) mathematical fundamentals of fracture; (3) engineering fundamentals of fracture and environmental effects; (4) engineering fracture design; (5) fracture design of structures; (6) fracture of metals; and (7) fracture of nonmetals and composites. The present volume focuses on the fracture of metals. The book opens with chapter on the influence of alloying elements on fracture behavior in metallic systems of the three common crystal structures: face-centered cubic, body-centered cubic, and hexagonal close packed. Separate chapters follow on the principal microstructural factors which seem to be important for fracture toughness; the nature of the fracture processes occurring in high-strength materials; and the state of knowledge on fracture toughness of structural steels. Subsequent chapters deal with the strength and toughness of hot-rolled, ferrite-pearlite steels; fracture behavior of aluminum and its alloys; and fracture phenomena associated with electrical effects.

Book excerpt: The tensile properties and plane strain fracture toughness of 1/2 and 1 inch thick 2219-T87 aluminum alloy were determined as a function of testing at temperatures from room to -423 F. The tensile and yield strengths of this material show a gradual increase as the testing temperature is decreased to -423 F while the elongation and reduction of area remain essentially unchanged. The plane strain fracture toughness of this material is relatively insensitive to testing temperature and shows only a slight increase with decreasing testing temperature. Specimens machined so that the crack propagation is perpendicular to the rolling plane show somewhat higher values of plane strain fracture toughness than when crack propagation is parallel to the rolling plane. The plane strain fracture toughness of the 1 inch thick 2219-T87 aluminum alloy was somewhat lower than that of the 1/2 inch thick plate. Illustrative examples are presented on using these parameters in design. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is concerned with the use of the sharply notched cylindrical specimen as an index of plane-strain fracture toughness in quality assurance of aluminum alloy products. Specifically, information is presented that relates to the use of the ASTM Tentative Method for Sharp-Notch Tension Testing with Cylindrical Specimens (E 602-76T) in quality assurance programs. The first part of this paper describes the results of an investigation into the influence of fundamental testing variables on the sharp notch strength of several high-strength aluminum alloys. The results indicate that variations in the notch root radius and eccentricity of loading (expressed in terms of the percent bending in a verification specimen) within the range permitted by the Tentative Method can contribute significantly to the scatter observed in relations between the sharp notch to yield strength ratio (NYR) and KIc. The results also show that the upper limit of KIc beyond which the NYR loses useful sensitivity to further increases in KIc decreases with decreasing specimen size (diameter). It appears that the notch strength of the smaller of the two specimens (1⁄2 and 1116 in. diameter; 13 and 27 mm diameter) specified in the Tentative Method will have rather limited application as an index of KIc for the tougher high-strength aluminum alloys. However, the upper limit of 1.3 presently placed on the NYR appears to be overly conservative for high-strength aluminum alloys.

Book excerpt: The plane-strain initiation fracture toughness and plane-stress stable crack growth resistance were determined with a single small compact tension (C(T)) specimen for each of three precipitation hardened aluminum alloy sheets (AA2024-T3, AA2519-T87 (+Mg+Ag), and AA2650-T6). Crack length was monitored precisely with direct current potential difference (DCPD) measurements, and specimen plasticity was accounted for with the J-integral. The DCPD technique resolves a small amount of crack-tip process-zone damage (?20 μm) that constitutes crack initiation under plane-strain constraint. Two measures of initiation toughness are calculated: the elastic-plastic fracture toughness detected by DCPD (JICi, KJICi) and the toughness based on ASTM Standard E 813 () and the toughness based on ASTM Standard E 813 (JIC, KJIC). High resolution of fracture initiation is necessary to obtain a lower bound initiation toughness,). High resolution of fracture initiation is necessary to obtain a lower bound initiation toughness, KJICi, because plane-strain constraint is present ahead of the fatigue precrack but is rapidly lost with crack extension in thin sheet. KJIC overestimates toughness due to constraint loss coupled with the offset blunting line definition of fracture initiation. The J-integral/DCPD method provides a reproducible measure of the plane-stress linear-elastic resistance curve (KJ - ?a) that compares reasonably to R-curves determined for large middle-cracked tension specimens. The small specimen method is effective for studies pertaining to alloy development, environmental effects, and fracture mechanisms.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When an airframe component breaks suddenly, under conditions well within the design envelope, the occurrence is usually termed brittle fracture. This report uses an analytical scheme which combines data from several different sources in order to provide diagrams of fracture resistance versus thickness for a number of 'standard' yield strength levels. By using such diagrams, limited data on a new alloy or heat treatment may be compared, and the impact on designs where fracture resistance is important may be assessed. The data background employed in the analysis consisted of both iron- and aluminum-base airframe materials. However, this report focuses largely on the 7000-series aluminum alloys. Minimum expected behavior has been developed for this series of aluminum alloys by examining fracture toughness, yield strength, and thickness effect in accordance with the analytical scheme described.
