Book Synopsis The Texas Land and Development Company by : B.R. Brunson
Download or read book The Texas Land and Development Company written by B.R. Brunson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural and urban development came late to the Texas South Plains, and frontier life lingered well into the twentieth century. In the decade preceding World War I numerous land companies flourished in the area and acted as catalysts for settlement and economic expansion. Prominent among these companies was the Plainview-based Texas Land and Development Company, founded in 1912 as an operating agent for a syndicate of eastern financiers. Like most land companies, the Texas Land and Development Company operated a large-scale enterprise that broke up ranch holdings into tracts for sale to farmers. Company agents advertised broadly in newspapers and magazines and organized special train trips to bring prospective customers to the area. And, like most entrepreneurs associated with frontier land companies, backers of the Texas Land and Development Company hoped to realize a quick profit from land sales. The Plainview enterprise was, however, unique in many ways. It promoted relatively high-priced lands and tried to sell fully developed, irrigated farms. The company was an important social and economic force in Plainview and the surrounding counties because its backers put capital into the region instead of taking money out. Especially during the early years, the company realized little profit from sales because of war and depression. The complex and sophisticated fiscal structure of the company is of particular historical significance. B. R. Brunson traces the history of the influential Texas Land and Development Company from its inception in 1912 to its final dissolution in January 1956. He combines an analysis of the company's role in Panhandle economic growth with lively biographies of the men who organized the operation and descriptions of their achievements in the fields of irrigation, farm planning, company organization, and finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My son asked me to write the things I did while growing up. The two chapters I thought I could write became forty-four chapters. My memories are happy moments, as I grew up during the Depression in a wonderful Christian home six miles south of Littlefield, Texas. The moment my Father saw me, he called me his Plains Angel. My Mother was a kind and thoughtful person with a precious disposition and always spoke with positive words. Living with my brothers and sisters was like having my best friends with me at all times. Life was great even with the sandstorms turning our daylight to darkness, planting black-eye peas instead of cotton because of little rainfall, gathering eggs from tall haystacks, hoeing cotton from dawn to dusk, and learning how to preserve fruits, vegetables, and meat for our winter food. My Father was a great farmer and helped provide electricity and a party-line telephone system to our rural community. He is known as Mr. REA (Rural Electrification Administration) in Littlefield, Texas. I researched my Littlefield School system in 1913 and found Mr. George W. Littlefield had donated land for a one-room school building. Ms. Willie Armstrong taught school in April, May, and June with a yearly salary of forty dollars. My dream to help children and fill their lives with sunshine came true the day I began my teaching career in Plainview, Texas. After writing about World War I, World War II, and the following wars, I have a better understanding what my two brothers and other family members must have endured. I am thankful my three wonderful sons – Terry, Dale, and Randy with their adventures at home, church, school, Scout trips, did not have to experience the pain of war. My life has been blessed with a wonderful husband, three great sons that are successful, a great daughter-in-law, and two precious grandchildren, Trevor and Lane. My joyful memories growing up on a Littlefield farm with my wonderful family gave me the foundation I needed for my life’s adventures and accomplishment. Bonnie Faye James Gaston

Book Synopsis Things I Have Saw and Did by : Danny Andrews
Download or read book Things I Have Saw and Did written by Danny Andrews and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Things I Have Saw and Did”—the title derived from a grammatically challenged sports officiating friend—is a compilation of some 250 stories gleaned from Danny Andrews’s diverse life experiences. He has been a journalist, including 39 years of column, news, feature and sports writing for The Plainview, Texas, Daily Herald; sports broadcaster, sports official and basketball magazine publisher; involved in a variety of community organizations; an active Christian layman; and, for the past eight years, the alumni director at his alma mater, Wayland Baptist University. The stories include his family; growing-up years in Plainview; longtime friends and chance encounters with celebrities; experiences in school and Wayland; playing, officiating, reporting on, and broadcasting sports; interesting Herald and Hearst newspaper colleagues and experiences; faith, church and mission ventures; and a collection of miscellaneous tales. Andrews says he’s been “Thinking Out Loud” (the title of his Herald column for 28 years and his musings for the Wayland alumni magazine) since his formal journalism career began almost 50 years ago. He brings his subjects to life with vivid detail, humor and pathos, hoping to foster in readers memories of their own similar experiences, to take them vicariously to meet with presidents in the White House, confront cantankerous newspaper readers, share humorous glimpses of sports officiating and broadcasting, relate tales that prove this is a small world after all and, perhaps, encourage their own faith journey.
