Book excerpt: The M1917 Revolver, formally United States Revolver, Caliber .45, M1917, was a U.S. six-shot revolver of .45 ACP caliber. It was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1917 to supplement the standard M1911 .45 ACP semi-automatic pistol during World War I. After, it was primarily used by secondary and non-deployed troops. There were two variations of the M1917, one from Colt and one from Smith & Wesson. The Colt M1917 Revolver was essentially the same as the M1909 with a cylinder bored to take the .45 ACP cartridge and the half-moon clips to hold the rimless cartridges in position. In early Colt production revolvers, attempting to fire the .45 ACP without the half-moon clips was unreliable at best, as the cartridge could slip forward into the cylinder and away from the firing pin. Later production Colt M1917 revolvers had headspacing machined into the cylinder chambers, just as the Smith & Wesson M1917 revolvers had from the start. The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 was essentially an adaptation of that company's Second Model .44 Hand Ejector, chambered instead for .45 ACP, employing a shortened cylinder allowing for use of half-moon clips, and a lanyard ring on the butt of the frame. After the First World War, M1917s became popular on the civilian and police market. Created in 1941, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M1917's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of the gun assembly, accessories and target exercises. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book excerpt: The M1911 is a single-action, semi-automatic pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge, and served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States military from 1911 to 1985. It was widely used from the First World War all the way up to the Vietnam War. Modern M1911 variants are still in use by some units within the U.S. Army Special Forces, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. The Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 was designed by John Browning, and is the best known of his designs to use the short recoil principle in its basic design. The design was widely copied, and this operating system rose to become the most renowned type of the twentieth century. In total, the United States purchased around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols in military contracts during its service life. Created in 1940, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M1911's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation, it details many strategies for achieving outstanding marksmanship. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book excerpt: The United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1 is a lightweight, semi-automatic longarm that became a standard firearm for the U.S. military during World War II. It was widely used by U.S. and foreign military, police forces, and has also been a popular civilian firearm. The first M1 carbines were delivered in mid-1942, with priority given to troops in Europe. The M1 was highly praised for its small size, light weight and firepower, especially by troops who were unable to use a full size rifle as their primary weapon. The .30 Carbine cartridge was adequate in both muzzle energy and muzzle velocity. The .30 Carbine had a round-nose 110 gr bullet, in contrast to the spitzer bullet designs found in most full power rifle cartridges of the WWII era. A total of over 6.5 million M1 carbines and variants were manufactured, making it the most popular small arm for the American military during World War II.Created in 1942, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M1's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation, it details many strategies for attaining outstanding marksmanship. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest of all U.S. military issue, bolt action rifles, the M1903 Springfield saw front line service in WWI and WWII, and limited service in the Korean War and Vietnam. Officially known as the United States Rifle, Caliber .30-06, Model 1903, the Springfield is a five-round magazine, repeating rifle. The origins of the weapon can be traced back to the 1898 Spanish-American War, and the effective and deadly use of the Mauser M1893 by Spanish troops. It was clear that these weapons outclassed American standard-issue Springfield Krag-Jorgensen rifles. In the wake of that conflict, the U.S. military decided to rapidly adopt the "Mauser system" and purchased a license from Germany for $200,000. The resulting weapon was a long gun with accuracy at range and a reliable internal mechanism. It was fairly conventional in design, except that the weapon could be considered a hybrid, in that it was capable of serving both as a service gun and a carbine. The M1903 was designed, developed and built at the Springfield Armory, and so took on the "Springfield" designation. Initially designed to use the 30-03 cartridge, the weapon was modified to accept a pointed bullet design known as the "Cartridge, Ball, Caliber 30, Model of 1906". This bullet became known as the ".30-06" or ".30-06 Springfield". The M1903 first saw combat during the Philippine-American War, and by the outbreak of WWI was the U.S. Army's standard infantry rifle. It began to be supplanted by the semi-automatic M1 Garand in 1936, but due to production shortages and other issues, it was still used extensively in WWII. Post-war it remained in service primarily secondary uses such as guard duty, as a drill rifle, and for sniper duty. Today the M1903 Springfield remains popular as a civilian firearm, historical collector's piece, a competitive shooting rifle, and as a military drill rifle. Produced by the U.S. Army in 1943, this basic field manual was standard issue and used for basic training and sniper school. It contains chapters about the handling and care of the weapon, ammunition, marksmanship, and instructor curriculum.

United States Martial Pistols and Revolvers, first published in 1939, provides firearm collectors and enthusiasts with a single authoritative volume containing information on the development and description of martial short arms, from the flintlock pistol that was available at the birth of the nation to the latest available handguns during the World War I. This book is particularly useful to collectors as an important reference source, offering a listing of single-shot pistols, revolvers, and semiautomatic pistols, over the period of 1799–1917. Gluckman covers the brief histories of more than one hundred handguns, going into the specific details of the chemistry of gunpowder and the development of the first automatic firearms. Following innovators like Reverend Alexander Forsyth, John P. Lindsay, and Samuel Colt, the evolution of the weapons is carefully examined over time. The comprehensive text is accompanied by a series of original illustrations of the pistols and revolvers, demonstrating the specifics of many gun mechanisms. For experts and the more casual hobbyist alike, this book offers a unique collection of information on martial pistols and revolvers in the United States, up until WWI. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed history of the most widely used 37-mm gun of WWII and its applications. Developed in response to the 1899 Hague Convention, the 37-mm gun met the restrictions on the size of weapons that could fire explosive shells, yet was also light and lethal enough to be used in battle. After World War I, in which the French Model 1916 37-mm was used extensively, several countries developed or adopted the 37-mm gun. Behind in their development of an antitank gun, the United States relied on the German Pak 36 37-mm design as a basis for development. By the mid 1930s, the US Ordnance Department designed the M3 37-mm gun and M4 carriage resulting in a towed antitank gun, the first antitank gun in the US Army. This gun proved effective at the beginning of World War II, but as German armor protection increased, it could not penetrate the frontal armor of many German tanks and was relegated to lesser roles. However, the gun proved effective against the Japanese tanks and Japanese strong points in the Far East. The US military used the gun on several production and experimental armored vehicles including the M3 Lee Medium Tank, the M3 Stuart Light Tank, the M5 Stuart Light Tank, the M8 Armored Car, the T17E1 Staghound Armored Car and the M3A1E3 Scout Car. The gun was also used on several non-armored vehicles, the P39 Aeracobra, and selected naval vessels. Despite its small size, the US M3 37-mm gun served throughout the war, on many vehicles and performed exactly as designed. Fully illustrated, this is the first complete account of the development and use of the US 37-mm gun in World War II.

This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US 75-mm tank gun M2 was the standard American tank gun of the Second World War. The M2 originated from the famous French Canon de 75 modele 1897 field gun of World War I fame, which was also adopted by the United States and used well into World War II as the 75-mm M1897 field gun. The primary round fired by the M2 was the M48 High Explosive. This round traveled at 625m/s and contained 1.5 pounds of TNT filling. The M48 was available in two versions, standard or supercharge. Supercharge increased the propellent charge for greater muzzle velocity. Other important rounds fired by the 75-mm tank guns were the T30 Canister shot for use against troops in the open at short range, and two different types of armor-piercing rounds. The M2 was primarily mounted in the Lee Medium Tank M3. In Britain the tank was called by two names based on the turret configuration. Tanks employing US pattern turrets were called the "General Lee," named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Variants using British pattern turrets were known as "General Grant," named after U.S. General Ulysses S. Grant. Design commenced in July of 1940, and the first M3s were operational in late 1941. Created in 1942, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M2's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for training purposes, it details the M2's assembly, maintenance, ammunition and accessories. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Hatcher, an expert on the subject of firearms of all sorts, readers will gain invaluable insight into everything to do with handheld firearms of the 1930s. In his introduction, Hatcher emphasizes that he has made an earnest effort to make this book accessible for both novices and experts. Novices who know nothing whatsoever about firearms and their use can easily learn from this book, while experts will find a technical reference book where “the results of many experiments with pistols and revolvers and their ammunition are tabulated in convenient form.” Covering such subjects as the different methods of shooting and using hand firearms; their mechanism, care and repair; their interior and exterior ballistics; the peculiar suitability of the different kinds for various purposes; the relative effectiveness or stopping power of the various calibers and types of gun and ammunition; and many more, this book is an immense store of knowledge on early handguns. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The M3 was an American .45-caliber submachine gun adopted for U.S. Army service in December of 1942, as the United States Submachine Gun, Cal. .45, M3. Compared to the Thompson submachine gun, the M3 was cheaper to produce, lighter, and more accurate. The M3 was commonly referred to as the "Grease Gun" or simply "the Greaser," due to its visual similarity to the mechanic's tool. Intended as a replacement for the .45-caliber Thompson submachine gun, the M3 began to replace the Thompson in first-line service in late 1944 and early 1945. The M3 was an automatic, air-cooled blowback operated weapon that fired from an open bolt. Built of plain .060-in. thick sheet steel, the M3 receiver was stamped in two halves that were then welded together. In December of 1944, a modernized variant of the M3 was introduced into service known as the M3A1, with all parts except the bolt, housing assembly, and receiver interchangeable with those of the M3. Due to delays caused by production issues and specification changes, the M3 and M3A1 saw little action in World War II. Created in 1957, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M3 and M3A1's design and capabilities. Intended as a commander's manual for training crew members, it details many aspects of assembly, maintenance, and operation. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
