Laut g hours till his screams could be heard through the palace halls--he issued a commission for one of the greatest expeditions of discovery that ever set out for America--a commission to Vitus {14} Bering, the Dane, to explore the Pacific for Russia. Like Peter the Great, Vitus Bering had served an apprenticeship with the East India Company. It is more than probable that he first met his royal patron while he was in this service. While other expeditions to explore America had but to cross the sea before beginning their quest, Bering's expedition had to cross the width of Europe, and then the width of Asia, before it could reach even the sea. Between St Petersburg and the Pacific lay six thousand miles of mountain and tundra. Caravans, flat-boats, and dog-trains must be provided to transport supplies; and the vessels to be used at the end of the land journey must be built on the Pacific. The explorers were commissioned to levy tribute for food and fur on Tartar tribes as their caravans worked slowly eastw We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Pacific Coast The purpose of the present work is to treat of the vast region of the Pacific Coast of North and South America as a physical and political entity, seen from the point of view of the observant traveller from jour neys extending over a number of years: a task never perhaps attempted before. The excellent recep tion accorded to my former travel books, dealing with some of the States of South and North America, is borne out by the pile of favourable reviews and of numerous letters from readers at home and abroad which I have; and the several editions which have been reached in a short space: and these seem to offer a measure of popularity for the present work. To those (few) reviewers who have objected to intimate descrip tions I would reply that these books, having at base a geographical purpose, are written to interest the ordinary reader and student of trav'ei-lgre, rather than for the scientist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Diego 1542-1908 an Account of the Rise and Progress of the Pioneer Settlement on the Pacific, Coast of the United States, Vol. 2: The Modern City N the 15th of April, 1867, something hap pened which radically changed the course of San Diego history. This was the arrival of a man from San Francisco on the steamer Pacific. He was not possessed of large means, represented no organization, and had no personal following, yet was destined to inaugurate a movement which should change the location of the city and start it on the road to real and enduring greatness. In the next chapter we shall have Father Horton's own account of the circumstances which led to his coming and of how he proceeded after his arrival. At this point it is important to get a glimpse of his previous career and to make some characterization of his work in founding the modern city. His wife was the daughter of Lieutenant John J. Young, at that time superintendent of the Naval Hospital. During the next two years he saw service on various vessels, and on September 24, 1840, was ordered to the brig Consort, detailed to the Coast Survey. The cruise lasted over a year, and during that time a survey was made of the Gulf of Mexico. From that time on his work was almost entirely with the Coast Survey, duty calling him to nearly every nook and corner of his country's coast line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jason Lee: The Pioneer of Methodism and Civilization on the Pacific Coast This booklet is not designed as a history of the life of Jason Lee. It is simply a paper prepared for the Preachers' Meeting of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Portland Ore and is given td the public in this form in accordance with the unanimous and urgent request of that body. It was afterwards deliv ered in a number of the leading congregations in that citv and vicinity, who joined in that request. It is designed to identify the place and work of jason lee in the civil and religious history of the Pacific Coast. If it seems the language of eulogy, it is because no language but that is suitable to its theme' and the writer makes no apology for his heartfelt admiration of the Life and Work of this Pioneer of Pioneers.
