This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates in brief the pioneering work of Maulana Muhammad Ali and Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din, leaders of the Lahore Ahmadiyya, in introducing the West to the teachings of Islam. The first part shows how Maulana Muhammad Ali made accessible to the West for the first time an English translation of the Quran by a Muslim in 1917. Then it traces the connection of four later Muslim translations (those by Marmaduke Pickthall, Abdullah Yusuf Ali, ‘Shakir’, and Muhammad Asad) with Maulana Muhammad Ali. The second part deals with the establishment of the Woking Muslim Mission by Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din in 1913, which became the national centre of Islamic activity in Britain and is the most important part of the Muslim heritage of Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been published at the centenary of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam, or Ahmadiyya Association for the Propagation of Islam, known also as the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement, which was founded at Lahore in May 1914. It is the result of new research and brings to light some forgotten and buried material. It shows that the Lahore Ahmadiyya is a direct continuation of the Ahmadiyya Movement as founded by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (d. 1908) and as led afterwards by his successor Hazrat Maulana Nur-ud-Din (d. 1914). It seeks to preserve the beliefs, mission and goals of this Movement as set down by these two guiding lights.

Book excerpt: This booklet is compiled at the centenary of the publication, in 1917 in England, of the English translation and commentary of the Quran by Maulana Muhammad Ali — the first such work by a Muslim to be printed and published in the West, the first such work by a Muslim to be widely available in the world. It recounts the history of how the Maulana carried out this unprecedented project, its publication and the reviews it received. Its influence on later translations is discussed in detail. Maulana Muhammad Ali’s thorough revision of it to produce the 1951 edition, is then covered. Information is also provided about editions produced after his death.

Book excerpt: "This book provides the first ever overview of the history and development of Islam in Afghanistan. It covers every era from the conversion of Afghanistan through the medieval and early modern periods to the present day. Based on primary sources in Arabic, Persian, Pashto, Urdu and Uzbek, its depth and scope of coverage is unrivalled by any existing publication on Afghanistan. As well as state-sponsored religion, the chapters cover such issues as the rise of Sufism, Sharia, women's religiosity, transnational Islamism and the Taliban. Islam has been one of the most influential social and political forces in Afghan history. Providing idioms and organizations for both anti-state and anti-foreign mobilization, Islam has proven to be a vital socio-political resource in modern Afghanistan. Even as it has been deployed as the national cement of a multi-ethnic 'Emirate' and then 'Islamic Republic,' Islam has been no less a destabilizing force in dividing Afghan society. Yet despite the universal scholarly recognition of the centrality of Islam to Afghan history, its developmental trajectories have received relatively little sustained attention outside monographs and essays devoted to particular moments or movements. To help develop a more comprehensive, comparative and developmental picture of Afghanistan's Islam from the eighth century to the present, this edited volume brings together specialists on different periods, regions and languages. Each chapter forms a case study 'snapshot' of the Islamic beliefs, practices, institutions and authorities of a particular time and place in Afghanistan"--Provided by publishe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on insights from theoretical engagements with borders and subalternity, Beyond Religion in India and Pakistan suggests new frameworks for understanding religious boundaries in South Asia. It looks at the ways in which social categories and structures constitute the bordering logics inherent within enactments of these boundaries, and positions hegemony and resistance through popular religion as an important indication of wider developments of political and social change. The book also shows how borders are continually being maintained through violence at national, community and individual levels. By exploring selected sites and expressions of piety including shrines, texts, practices and movements, Virinder S. Kalra and Navtej K. Purewal argue that the popular religion of Punjab should neither be limited to a polarised picture between formal, institutional religion, nor the 'enchanted universe' of rituals, saints, shrines and village deities. Instead, the book presents a picture of 'religion' as a realm of movement, mobilization, resistance and power in which gender and caste are connate of what comes to be known as 'religious'. Through extensive ethnographic research, the authors explore the reality of the complex, dynamic and contested relations that characterize everyday material and religious lives on the ground. Ultimately, the book highlights how popular religion challenges the borders and boundaries of religious and communal categories, nationalism and theological frameworks while simultaneously reflecting gender/caste society.

Book excerpt: This book presents a nuanced narrative on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s (1817–1898) life and his invaluable contribution to the democratic consciousness in India. Based on extensive archival research and a close study of his writings, speeches, and addresses, it explores the life and works of Sir Syed in the broader context of socio-political debates in nineteenth-century India. A seminal figure who shaped modern India, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan is known as the pioneer of modern education among the Muslims in India. Reconciling faith with demonstrable truths, he contributed immensely as a member of the several apex bodies such as Vice-Regal Legislative Council, Royal Public Service Commission, Royal Education Commission, and Legislative Council of North West Provinces. The volume also explores the reformer’s views on issues like colonial law and administration, the concept of blasphemy, conversion, female education, religious beliefs, freedom of press, emancipation of women, Hindu–Muslim unity, Urdu–Hindi controversy, and reservation for Muslims. Thoughtfully and incisively written, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern India, Indian political thought, political philosophy, education, political science, colonial history, Islamic Studies, religious studies, Islamic law, biography, and South Asian studies.

It takes a broader legal perspective to the multifaceted reality of nationality and citizenship. The methodology employed builds on the interdisciplinary approach of comparative legal studies, and brings in theories, concepts and insights from anthropology, political science, Arab and Islamic studies, linguistics and sociology. The work relies on a broad range of Western and Arab references, and all sources and documents were directly accessed in their original languages; this is particularly relevant for Arab legislation (all in-text reference has been translated by the author, and the original has been inserted using scientific transliteration). -- Website OAPEN Library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world plagued with intolerance for cultural, racial and religious differences, A Message of Peace serves as a panacea to the ills of the society. Prophetic in foresight and universal in scope, this book lays out a path to the peaceful existence of all humans based on the central theme of worshipping the One God. It is not surprising therefore that A Message of Peace forms the last work of a man who was destined to lay the foundation for the establishment of peace in this day and age and whose advent was prophesied in all major religions of the world-the Promised Messiah and Reformer of the Latter Days. "My countrymen!" writes the Promised Messiah, "A religion which does not inculcate universal compassion is no religion at all. Similarly a human being without the faculty of compassion is no human at all."
