Book excerpt: The historiography of aviation has tended to view the realms of civil and military aviation as disparate endeavours whose development has by and large followed separate paths. In considering the earliest years of flying in the Union of South Africa, this study shows that from the first years in which both branches of aviation existed, there was a clear interdependence between the two. From the first military aviators being trained by a civilian flying school prior to World War One, to the beginnings of the Air Force and the first attempts at commercial aviation in the 1920s, that relationship was demonstrated. The limited number of pilots and aircraft that were active in the country for most of the inter-War period, meant that the South African Air Force provided the bulk of the expertise, in terms of administration, technical support and even some of the aviation functions generally associated with commercial enterprises. The need to build a reservist force and extract maximum value from South African Airways in the wake of the Great Depression and in the face of new potential threats after the Italian invasion of Abyssinia led to new government policies. To achieve these aims in the late 1930s, a state-subsidized Thousand Pilots Scheme was started and a dual role for SAA (as an airline and a bomber wing) was defined, mainly thanks to the initiatives of the government minister, Oswald Pirow. The immediate beneficiaries were the flying schools and the national air carrier. Outside of the government sphere, women pilots and aviation enthusiasts set up their own Women's Aviation Association. All of these measures would soon be tested in the context of another major conflict from 1939. The ability of the SAAF to make some kind of contribution in the first year of the war, can be interpreted as being the culmination of developments in the previous decades arising from a military aviation tradition that was closely linked to civil aviation enterprises in the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This a story of pioneers, intrepid aviators, adventurers, tycoons and innovators. It is also a story of dedication and determination, for despite fixed-wing aircraft proving their value over the battlefields of the Western Front during the First World War, convincing governments and public alike that they had a role in peacetime proved far more challenging. The Americans, as inventors of heavier-than-air powered flight, had briefly courted with a passenger airline across Tampa Bay in 1914, yet it took a further nine years for mail to be flown coast-to-coast. In 1919 a British company made the first international scheduled flight between London and Paris, but the continuation of regular services was thwarted by a less-than-enthusiastic government that allowed its generously subsidised French competition, for a short time at least, to fly cross-Channel passenger schedules unimpeded. The British eventually realzed that fast links with their Empire were vital, followed the example of the French and Dutch who had forged air links with their cousins in North Africa and the Far East. Meanwhile, in South America, the Germans, forbidden under the Versailles Treaty from any major aircraft-building, were establishing cunning supremacy by forming airlines throughout South America and in China. While America awaited a transcontinental passenger service, Juan Trippe's Pan American Airways was crossing swords with Ralph O'Neill of New York, Rio & Buenos Aires Line (NYRBA) for air supremacy between the US, Brazil, Argentina and elsewhere in Latin America that led to the formation of arguably the world's greatest airline. In Russia, Igor Sikorsky had built a vast passenger-carrying aircraft, the Il'ya Muromets, and politicians debated whether giant airships or fixed-wing aircraft should rule the skies _ an issue that was put firmly to bed when the mighty German airship Hindenburg exploded while mooring at Lakehurst in 1937. Robert BluffieldÍs highly researched and detailed account tells the dramatic stories of explorers such as Kingsford Smith, Lindbergh and Cobham, and flamboyant entrepreneurs, some well known, others forgotten, who risked fortunes and reputations to follow their dreams of reaching and ruling the skies over empires, continents and oceans. Against bewildering adversity, corruption, underhanded deals and dwindling resources, these tenacious individuals braved the elements using primitive, entirely unsuitable equipment to establish earth-shrinking aerial services that criss-crossed the great oceans and the globe's most inhospitable territories. These are the stories of those pioneers _ of A_ropostale, CNAC, Air Orient, Imperial Airways, KLM, Deutsche Luft Hansa, Pan Am, SCADTA, The Condor Syndicat, Qantas and others that had a far-reaching impact on the way the modern world would travel.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a South African Pioneer (1st Series "Wanderjahre") The period mainly. Dealt with is that magical one when South Africa-unnoted and obscure was startled from the simplicity of her bucolic life by the discovery. Of gold and diamonds. This was, of course, some years before the fountains of her boundless potential wealth had become fully unsealed. I was one of that band of light-hearted, haphazard pioneers who, rejoicing in youthful energy and careless of their own interests, unwittingly laid the foundation upon which so many great fortunes have been built. An ancient my.th relates how. The god Dionysus decreed that everything touched by Midas, the Phrygian king, should turn into gold, but the effect was so disastrous that Midas begged for a reversal of the decree. The prayer was granted, conditionally upon the afflicted king bathing in the River Pactolus. South Africa may, in a sense, he paralleled with Midas - both as regards the bane of gold and the antidote of bathing - but her Pactolus has been one of blood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Their hands are shaking ever so slightly. They will be flying again in the morning" Vlamgat, literally 'flaming hole' in Afrikaans, was the nickname the South African Air Force (SAAF) gave to the Mirage F1, its formidable frontline jet fighter during South Africa's long 'border wars' in South West Africa (Namibia) and Angola from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Battling Soviet MiG-21s over African skies, the Vlammies, the Mirage pilots as they were affectionately known, acquitted themselves with distinction and honour. Vlamgat is a gripping account of these pilots and their deeds of bravery; their experiences are authentically related with accuracy, humour and pathos--by the author, himself a Vlammie. As Willem Hechter, former Chief of the SAAF, says: "Vlamgat deserves a place of pride in the long history of this, the second oldest air force in the world." Brigadier-General Dick Lord joined the Royal Navy as an air cadet in 1958, where he qualified as a fighter pilot. Flying Sea Venoms and Sea Vixens, he served on board the aircraft carriers Centaur, Victorious, Hermes and Ark Royal on cruises around the world. In the mid '60s, he was selected for a two-year exchange tour with the US Navy, flying A4 Skyhawks and F4 Phantoms out of San Diego, California. He completed tours of air warfare instruction, flying Hunters out of the naval air stations at Lossiemouth, Scotland and Brawdy, Wales. He returned to South Africa in early '70s and joined the South African Air Force (SAAF), flying Impalas, Sabres and Mirage IIIs. During the Border War, he commanded 1 Squadron, flying Mirage F1AZs into Angola, followed by running air force operations out of Oshikati, Windhoek and SAAF Headquarters in Pretoria. A highlight of his career was organizing the successful fly-past of 76 aircraft for Nelson Mandela's inauguration as President of South Africa in 1994.
