Book Synopsis Pioneer Aircraft by : Philip Jarrett
Download or read book Pioneer Aircraft written by Philip Jarrett and published by Brassey's. This book was released on 2002 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers aviation from its earliest beginnings up to the outbreak of the First World War. It begins with the first theories and experiments in flight, including the attempts to fly by jumping from towers and the experiences of the lighter-than-air flight using balloons. It then analyses the experiments with kites and models in an attempt to understand the principles of aerodynamics. All this leads up to the first successful powered flights, culminating in the achievement of the Wright Brothers, whose flight at Kitty Hawk represented the first successful powered, sustained, and controlled flight. The remainder of the book covers the creation of an aeroplane industry putting aeroplanes to work, refining airframes and engines, adapting aeroplanes to fly from water, and understanding safety issues. The Series Editor Philip Jarrett, is a freelance author, editor and consultant specialiszing in aviation. He has been editor of Aeroplane, the Royal Aeronautical Society's newspaper, assistant editor of Aeroplane Monthly, and production editor of Flight International.

Book excerpt: The fighter jet engine is not merely a component of aerial machinery; it embodies the pinnacle of aerospace engineering, where power, precision, and reliability converge. Within its metallic veins pulses the heart of innovation, designed to defy gravity with unparalleled efficiency and grace. From the inception of aviation, the quest for speed and maneuverability has driven engineers to push the boundaries of what is possible. The fighter jet engine stands as a testament to this relentless pursuit, where every component, from turbine blades to combustion chambers, is meticulously crafted to withstand the extremes of flight. At its core, the fighter jet engine harnesses the transformative power of combustion, converting fuel into thrust with an efficiency that defines aerial superiority. With each ignition, it propels its host aircraft into the skies with a roar that resonates through history—a symphony of engineering prowess and human ingenuity. Yet, beyond its technical marvels lies a deeper narrative: the symbiotic relationship between man and machine. Pilots entrust their lives to its performance, relying on its unwavering power to execute split-second maneuvers and engage adversaries in the theater of the sky. In the preface of a fighter jet engine, one finds not only a marvel of modern engineering but a symbol of courage, determination, and the ceaseless pursuit of dominance in the realm where the horizon meets the infinite blue.

Book Synopsis Pioneering Places of British Aviation by : Bruce Hales-Dutton
Download or read book Pioneering Places of British Aviation written by Bruce Hales-Dutton and published by Air World. This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-flying tour of British aviation history—and the sites where trials and triumphs took place. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, Britain was at the forefront of powered flight. Across the country, many places became centers of innovation and experimentation, as increasing numbers of daring men took to the skies. In 1799, at Brompton Hall, Sir George Cayley Bart put forward ideas that formed the basis of powered flight. There were balloon flights at Hendon from 1862, though attempts at powered flights from the area, later used as the famous airfield, don’t seem to have been particularly successful. Despite this, Louis Bleriot established a flying school there in 1910. It was gliders that Percy Pilcher flew from the grounds of Stamford Hall, Leicestershire, during the 1890s. He was killed in a crash there in 1899, but Pilcher had plans for a powered aircraft which experts believe may well have enabled him to beat the Wright Brothers in becoming the first to make a fixed-wing powered flight. At Brooklands, unsuccessful attempts were made to build and fly a powered aircraft in 1906—but on June 8, 1908, A.V. Roe made what is considered the first powered flight in Britain from there—in reality a short hop—in a machine of his own design and construction, enabling Brooklands to call itself the birthplace of British aviation. These are just a few of the places investigated in this intriguing look at the early days of British aviation, which includes the first ever aircraft factory in Britain in the railway arches at Battersea; Larkhill on Salisbury Plain, which became the British Army’s first airfield; and Barking Creek, where Frederick Handley Page established his first factory.

Book Synopsis Downey's Aerospace History, 1947-1999 by : Gerald A. Blackburn
Download or read book Downey's Aerospace History, 1947-1999 written by Gerald A. Blackburn and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Downey has been host to one of aerospace history's most sacred sites. For more than six decades, men and women have gathered in this Los Angeles County town to make the dreams of tomorrow a reality--inventing the future and starting America's journey to the stars. A wealthy Los Angeles industrialist, E. M. Smith, began this history with the purchase of a portion of the Huynan Ranch in August 1929. His company, EMSCO Aircraft, was the first of what would become a memorable list of pioneers in aviation and space. The story of the site's aerospace history extends from North American Aviation's tenancy in 1947 to the site closure in 1999 when engineers and scientists designed and developed the aerospace technology that took man to the moon and established a permanent presence in space.

It was loaned to the Science Museum, London, from 1928 to 1948, and is now displayed in the National Air and Space Museum (Smithsonian Institution) in Washington DC, a reproduction remaining in London. This edition of Gibbs-Smith's authoritative text, first published in 1987, is illustrated with a number of historic photographs and detailed diagrams.
