A historic recluse who practiced witchcraft generations ago is said to be still spinning misdeeds as the Sussex Sorcerer on Sunrise Mountain. The ghost of Reverend O'Malley walks the woods around Mount Allamuchy as the Purple Bishop, seeking vengeance against those who betrayed him. The sinisterly named Shades of Death Road along the sod farms and meadows of the Pequest River Valley has a bloody reputation of bandit killings, Lenape massacres and supernatural encounters. Author Robert Oakes leads readers on a spirited journey through the historic ghost lore of Northwestern New Jersey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a relatively peaceful suburb today, Woodbridge is anything but a placid place to hang your hat. Hero Natty Fitz Randolph became enshrined in local lore for his daring attacks on the British during the Revolutionary War. Rich clay deposits sparked the city's industrial revolution, bringing fortune and soaring architecture to the area. And the death-defying 1951 escape from a sinking freighter by Danish immigrant Captain Henrik Kurt Carlsen earned him commendations from both President Harry S. Truman and King Frederick IX of Denmark. Award-winning writer Phill Provance surveys Woodbridge through more than three hundred years of history.

Book excerpt: Pioneer Families of Northwestern New Jersey originally appeared as a series of weekly articles in the Hackettstown Gazette beginning with the issue of February 16, 1934, and ran for ninety-four installments. Never widely available, the series nonetheless constitutes the single greatest stockpile of genealogical reference material available on northwestern New Jersey families. Mr. Thomas Wilson, publisher of Hunterdon House, assembled all ninety-four installments of Armstrong's Pioneers in book form in 1979, adding a complete name index to the more than 7,000 persons in the process. Clearfield Company is delighted to reprint the Hunterdon version in a limited edition paperback.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important, albeit scarce, three-volume collection of family histories pertaining to persons who migrated to the Midwest during the last quarter of the eighteenth or first quarter of the nineteenth century is now available in a consolidated edition. Mrs. Walden, who privately published these genealogies between 1939 and 1941, has here bridged the earliest known records pertaining to each family so that future researchers might be able to trace their lines with less difficulty. Although the Clearfield edition lacks an index to the work as a whole, a complete name index to Volumes 1 and 2 can be found at the end of the second volume. In all, the reader will find about 150 allied families and some 7,500 Midwestern pioneers treated within these pages. Listed below are the main families covered by Mrs. Walden together with the states in which they settled: Harper of OH, PA, MO, and MI; Rainey of OH, IN, IL, MI, MO, KS; Boal of OH, IA, MI, MN, IN, IL, and WI; Hope of VA, OH, MO, WI, OR, WV, and IN; Dewees of DE, PA, OH, IN, IL, and IA; Francis of OH, NY, IA, and OK; Smith of NJ, OH, IN, IL, IA, and CA; Dorr of CT, OH, IN, IL, KS, NE, and CA; Coe of CT, OH, IN, and IA; Fuller of CT, OH, IN, and MO; Allen of CT, OH, KS, and IL; Pratt of CT and OH; Davis of NH, ME, OH, IN, and IA; True of NH, OH, IA, and MO; Argo of DE, OH, IL, and IA; and Plumly of PA, OH, and IA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical study of a little-known episode of the American Revolution in which Charleston residents were held in a British-occupied region of Florida. In the months following the May 1780 capture of Charleston, South Carolina, by combined British and loyalist forces, British soldiers arrested sixty-three Americans and transported them to the borderland town of St. Augustine, East Florida—territory under British control since the French and Indian War. In Patriots in Exile, James Waring McCrady and C. L. Bragg chronicle the banishment of these southerners, the hardships endured by their families, and the plight of the enslaved men and women who accompanied them. McCrady and Bragg examine the events from various perspectives, including the British who governed occupied Charleston, the families left behind, the armies in the field, the Continental Congress, and finally the Jacksonboro Assembly of January and February 1782. Using primary sources and archival materials, the authors develop biographical sketches of each exile and illuminate important facets of the American Revolution’s southern theater. While they shared a common fate, the exiles were a diverse lot of tradesmen, artisans, prominent civilians, military officers, and others—among them three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Although they had clear socioeconomic differences, most were unrepentant patriots forced to navigate complex and dangerous circumstances.
