Book excerpt: The Mark II detector in the ee− storage ring PEP at the Stanford Liner Accelerator Center (SLAC) is used to measure selected properties of hadronic events corresponding to produced bottom or charm quarks. Heavy flavor enrichment is accomplished by tagging events with prompt electrons or muons. Differences between bottom, charm and average jets are observed for momentum, transverse momentum, rapidity and jet mass distributions. A detailed study of the charged multiplicity of b- and c-enriched events finds the mean multiplicity of bottom and charm events to be 16.2 +- 0.5 +- 1.0 and 13.2 +- 0.5 +- 0.9, respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The corresponding 'non-leading' multiplicities of charged particles accompanying the pair of heavy hadrons are 5.2 +- 0.5 +- 0.9 for bottom, and 8.0 +- 0.5 +- 0.9 for charm. We find from these non-leading multiplicities that bottom and charm hadrons fragment with mean energy fractions of z/sub b/ = 0.79/sub -0.05//sup +0.10/ and z/sub c/ = 0.60/sub -0.11//sup +0.09/. These results confirm the expected hard fragmentation of heavy quarks and agree with previous measurements based on leptonic inclusive spectra and D* fragmentation. 48 refs., 29 figs.

Book excerpt: By comparing 3-jet (ee− .-->. q anti q g) and radiative 2-jet (ee− .-->. q anti q .gamma.) events from electron-positron annihilation, we have studied the local and global effects of the presence of a hard bremsstrahlung gluon in hadronic events. Detector and event selection efficiencies and biases affect these two kinds of events almost equally because they have very similar kinematics and topologies. Accurate comparisons of q anti q g and q anti q .gamma. events can therefore be made. Globally, we observe a depletion of hadrons in q anti q g events relative to q anti q .gamma. events on the opposite side of the event plane from the gluon, in the angular region between the q and anti q jets. This depletion is shown to be in agreement with the predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The existence of this effect demonstrates that the presence of a gluon significantly alters the color forces and hence the fragmentation process in hadronic events. We also use these q anti q .gamma. and q anti q g events to compare low energy (4.5 GeV) gluon and quark jets. Our data indicate that gluon jets have softer x/sub p/ distributions than quark jets, while the transverse momentum distributions of these two types of jets are identical within our errors. Although we are unable to determine if the multiplicities of gluon (n/sub /) and quark (n/sub q/) jets are different, the ratio n/sub g//n/sub q/ = 9/4 predicted asymptotically in QCD would not be consistent with our data.

Book excerpt: The charged particle multiplicity distributions for single jets in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV have been measured using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The shape of the distribution agrees well with a Poisson distribution. No correlation is observed between the multiplicities in the two jets of an event. For fixed values of the prong number of the total event, the multiplicity sharing between the two jets is in good agreement with a binomial distribution. These observations are contrasted to the results from soft hadronic collisions and conclusions are drawn about the nature of clusters. 21 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: We have studied hadron production in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy using the PEP-4 Time Projection Chamber Detector. The inclusive cross sections and mean multiplicities for .pi./sup + -/, K/sup + -/ and (p + anti p) production have been measured using ionization energy loss to separate particle species. We find on average 10.7 +- 0.6 .pi./sup + -/, 1.35 +- 13 K/sup + -/ and 0.60 +- 0.08 (p + anti p) per multihadron event. The differential cross section is well described by a number of Monte Carlo hadronization models. In addition, we have observed correlations in rapidity space for identified pions and kaons. Short-range KK correlations provide evidence for local flavor compensation during hadronization. Long-range .pi pi. and KK correlations indicate that the initial partons carry flavor. We also observe significant long-range .pi. K correlations as a result of heavy quark decays. 85 references, 67 figures, 11 tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of two- and three-particle correlations between like-sign pions produced in ee− annihilation at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy are presented. The analysis is based on data taken during the period 1982--1986 using the TPC/2.gamma. detector at PEP. Two-particle correlations are studied as a function of Q, the momentum difference as measured in the rest frame of the pion pair, and as a function of q0, the energy difference as measured in the lab frame. The Bose-Einstein enhancement is observed when Q is small even when the energy difference, q0, is substantial. This observation provides evidence that the Bose-Einstein correlations are best described by a model that correctly accounts for the relativistic motion of the particle sources. Three-pion correlations are measured both by using a standard three-pion correlation function, and also by using a correlation function for which the correlations between the pairs of pions within the triplet have been subtracted. The observation of three-pion correlations after pair correlations have been subtracted supports the interpretation that the observed correlations are due to Bose-Einstein interference. 56 refs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to cover the fascinating field of physics of relativistic heavy ions, mainly from the experimentalist's point of view. After the introductory chapter on quantum chromodynamics, basic properties of atomic nuclei, sources of relativistic nuclei, and typical detector set-ups are described in three subsequent chapters. Experimental facts on collisions of relativistic heavy ions are systematically presented in 15 consecutive chapters, starting from the simplest features like cross sections, multiplicities, and spectra of secondary particles and going to more involved characteristics like correlations, various relatively rare processes, and newly discovered features: collective flow, high pT suppression and jet quenching. Some entirely new topics are included, such as the difference between neutron and proton radii in nuclei, heavy hypernuclei, and electromagnetic effects on secondary particle spectra.Phenomenological approaches and related simple models are discussed in parallel with the presentation of experimental data. Near the end of the book, recent ideas about the new state of matter created in collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei are discussed. In the final chapter, some predictions are given for nuclear collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now in construction at the site of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva. Finally, the appendix gives us basic notions of relativistic kinematics, and lists the main international conferences related to this field. A concise reference book on physics of relativistic heavy ions, it shows the present status of this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many high-energy collider experiments (including the current Large Hadron Collider at CERN) involve the collision of hadrons. Hadrons are composite particles consisting of partons (quarks and gluons), and this means that in any hadron–hadron collision there will typically be multiple collisions of the constituents — i.e. multiple parton interactions (MPI). Understanding the nature of the MPI is important in terms of searching for new physics in the products of the scatters, and also in its own right to gain a greater understanding of hadron structure. This book aims at providing a pedagogical introduction and a comprehensive review of different research lines linked by an involvement of MPI phenomena. It is written by pioneers as well as young leading scientists, and reviews both experimental findings and theoretical developments, discussing also the remaining open issues.
