Book Synopsis Pineal and Retinal Relationships by : Paul G. O'Brien
Download or read book Pineal and Retinal Relationships written by Paul G. O'Brien and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pineal and Retinal Relationships presents the proceedings of the Symposium on Pineal and Retinal Relationships, held in Sarasota, Florida on May 3–5, 1985. This book looks at the features that the retina of the lateral eyes and the pineal organ share, including biochemical processes, photoreceptive structures, biorhythmic phenomena, and physiological functions. This text also discusses the general and complex concept of photoneuroendocrine systems. Organized into 27 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the basic features of retinal and pineal receptors. It then proceeds with a discussion of the environmental factors that vertebrates use as cue to synchronize their circannual and circadian rhythms by which they adjust their physiological, behavioral, and biochemical functions. Other chapters consider the melatonin synthesis in vertebrates, which allows them to sequence physiological events into closer temporal position with seasonal climatic changes. This book is a valuable resource to optometrist, neurologist, neurosurgeons, photobiologists, ophthalmologists, and eye care professionals.
Book Synopsis The Pineal Gland and Its Hormones by : Franco Fraschini
Download or read book The Pineal Gland and Its Hormones written by Franco Fraschini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the written contributions to the proceedings of a workshop related to the pineal gland and its hormones, which was held in Erice, Italy, on June 7 -June 13, 1994. This series of workshops, which began in 1982 and which have been held at four-year intervals since that time, has provided important continuity for advancing the state of knowledge relating to this very important investigative area. The enthusiasm for these conferences has increased steadily, as reflected in the number of individuals applying to attend and in the input of individuals who participate in the meeting. The 1994 meeting was important because of its timeliness. In the two years preceding the meeting a number of revolutionary discoveries were made relative to the actions of the pineal hormone melatonin. The Xenopus melatonin receptor was cloned, melatonin was demonstrated to be a potent antioxidant, the significance of melatonin receptors at the level of pars tuberalis in the regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis was questioned, a number of melatonin receptor analogues were discovered and successfully utilized, the mechanisms by which melatonin retards initiation and promotion of cancer was further elucidated, the clinical aspects of the pineal gland was re-scrutinized. Reviews relating to each of these subjects, as well as many others, are contained in this proceedings book. This volume represents an up-to-date repository for the most recent information related to this rapidly advancing field.
Book Synopsis Role of Melatonin and Pineal Peptides in Neuroimmunomodulation by : Franco Fraschini
Download or read book Role of Melatonin and Pineal Peptides in Neuroimmunomodulation written by Franco Fraschini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research related to the pineal gland has advanced rapidly in the last three decades since the discovery of its most important hormone, melatonin. This indoleamine has been shown to have a large variety of effects in the organism; the bulk of these actions were initially thought to relate the pineal gland to the reproductive and endocrine systems. It is now apparent, however, that the physiologic interactions of the pineal and its hormones far transcend its control of endocrine function. One field of pineal research that has developed rapidly within the last 5 years has been the demonstration of its relationship to the immune system. Since the pineal gland is part of the central nervous system, these observations generally fall in the category of neuroimmunology, an area that, in its own right, has received a great deal of attention in the last decade. Thus, a NATO Advanced Study Course entitled "Role of Melatonin and Pineal Pep tides in Neuroimmunomodulation" was convened in Erice, Sicily, on June 3-9, 1990. This book is a result of the scientific presentations given at the workshop. The contributions to the book include mini-review articles which summarized the presentations of the invited speakers as well as a selected number of brief communications where the subject matter was in line with the theme of the Advanced Study Course.

Book Synopsis The Pineal Gland and Cancer by : C. Bartsch
Download or read book The Pineal Gland and Cancer written by C. Bartsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 979 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The link between the pineal gland and cancer is a rapidly emerging research field due to promising experimental and clinical trials with melatonin. The pineal gland acts as a transducer of environmental light to regulate rhythmic processes, including reproductive function in seasonally breeding animals and the entrainment of circadian rhythms, such as the sleep-wake cycle, in man. This book elucidates the physiological significance of the pineal gland and surveys phenomena and mechanisms of pineal - tumor interaction at the neuroendocrine, neuroimmune, neural, and molecular levels. Yet unidentified low-molecular-weight pineal substances with tumor-inhibiting capacity, a possible involvement of melatonin in electromagnetic field effects on cancer, and the oncotherapeutic potential of melatonin are also addressed. The encouraging results should incite further research to elucidate the exact nature of the link between the pineal gland and cancer for the benefit of patients.

Book Synopsis Progress in Neuropeptide Research by : Döhler
Download or read book Progress in Neuropeptide Research written by Döhler and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as in the twenties and thirties of our century Ernst Scharrer published papers suggesting, on the basis of morphological findings, that the brain exhibits secretory function which he called neurosecretion. Only a few decades later Scharrer's presumption was fully confirmed by the isolation of a number of neuropeptides and by the disclosure of their chemical stuctures. Neuropeptide research is one of the most rapidly expanding fields in biomedicin. Initially investigators focused their attention on the existence and role of neuropeptides within the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system. This particular area of research still provides plenty of interesting and fruitful findings. Neuropeptides -including those which were discovered as "hypothalamic" hormones can also be detected in other parts of the brain and even in peripheral organs. In fact, several neuropeptides were found to be synthesized not only by neurones but also by non-neuronal cells. These observations imply much wider functional relevance of neuropeptides than it had been supposed initially. It appears from present day knowledge, that neuropeptides are not only involved in neurotransmission and in the control of pituitary function but also in direct regulation of numerous peripheral biological processes, including reproduction, digestion, immune functions, and even cell growth. This volume includes the invited papers of the Symposium on "Progress in Neuropeptide Research" wh ich was held in Looz/Poland on September 8-10,1988. Topics ofthe symposium reflect upon newly discovered peptides, new localizations, new functions, and new technical approaches.
