Book excerpt: President Roosevelt was getting ready to enter WWII. He needed more airfields, more planes, more pilots. In Florida, by 1941, military airfields were being built hurriedly. In Naples, Florida plans were made to build a sub-base to the larger Buckingham Field in Ft. Myers. Thus began the evolution of Southwest Florida's aviation history. From a small yet essential airfield to today;s hubbub of jet liners and Cessnas, Pilots, Pinballs, and Politics covers the politics of the City, the famous P-39s also called Pinballs, and the pilots that took off on training missions, and the ones that never returned. This book is for the history buff, the aviation lover or the person trying to understand local politics. Learn about the tragedies and triumphs as the airfield became the center for the military training of WWII gunners. Understand the influence of present day aviation on the people who work and fly around Southwest Florida. Featured in a PBS documentary on WWII aviation, the story adds to the historical conversation about warbirds and their crews.

World War II clamored for more pilots, more gunners, and more aircraft. The Naples Airdrome was built and suddenly the skies over Naples, Florida were filled with P-39s, P-40s, B-17s, and RP-63s. The orange "Pinball" (RP-63) participated in the Army Airforce's flexible gunnery training program. Hundereds of pilots and gunners were trained for combat and sent to the Pacific or European fronts. Here is the story of an airport and it's people. Follow the making of an airfield, hollowed out in the sawgrass and swamps of Collier County. From alligator wrestling, bivouacs and beach parties to tragedies, hurricanes, and disasters, learn all about the life at Naples Airdrome. Here is the sweeping story of an airport, from military occupation in 1941 to aviation's premier destination for the rich and famous in the 1980s. Here is a rich fascinating history of the Naples Municipal Airport's spirit and mission to the world of aviation.

Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

Book excerpt: During our lives, God often uses people who reach out in love and help to us during a difficult situation, as “Jesus with skin on.” This assures us that our heavenly Father still is with us, caring for us and holding us close. In other situations, the Lord can use pets and other animals to accomplish the same goals. In this memoir, a very special gift from God came into my life as a starving, thirsty, flea-and-ear-mite-infested stray kitten. He grew into a handsome, affectionate big cat who became my “Jesus wrapped in fur.” This kitty whom my husband had named Pinball was always there when I needed an extra touch of God’s love and presence during the darkest moments of the most difficult and challenging decade of my life. Pinball seemed to understand and share my feelings; he seemed to feel my pain. He grieved along with me and then often gave me reasons to chuckle and welcome the sunshine and joy once again. I am absolutely convinced that God himself placed Pinball into my life at exactly this moment when I most needed to know for certain that God still loves me, is always holding me close, and can bring me triumphantly through life’s deepest valleys as I hang on to His promises. A warm, soft, purring cat was a most comforting and healing medicine to soothe my broken heart and assure me that God is, indeed, good all the time, and I have grown stronger through all these experiences.

It aims to treat the essay with the close attention that has been given to other literary genres, and in doing so it suggests the beauty and depth of the form as a whole. At once personal appreciations and acute critical assessments, the pieces collected here broaden our perspective on the essay as a major literary art, tracing its history from William Hazlitt to Joan Didion.

Book excerpt: Pinball's history is America's history, from gambling and war-themed machines to the arcade revolution and, ultimately, the decline of the need to leave your house. The strangest thing about pinball is that it persists, and not just as nostalgia. Pinball didn't just stick around—it grew and continues to evolve with the times. Somehow, in today's iPhone world, a three-hundred-pound monstrosity of wood and cables has survived to enjoy yet another renaissance. Pinball is more to humor writer Adam Ruben than a fascinating book topic—it's a lifelong obsession. Ruben played competitive pinball for years, rising as high as the 80th-ranked player in the world. Then he had children. Now, mired in 9,938th place—darn kids—Ruben tries to stage a comeback, visiting pinball museums, gaming conventions, pinball machine designers, and even pinball factories in his attempt to discover what makes the world's best players, the real wizards, so good. Along the way, Ruben examines the bigger story of pinball's invention, ascent, near defeat, resurgence, near defeat again, and struggle to find its niche in modern society.
