Book excerpt: From 2001-2011, the General Aviation (GA) fatal accident rate remained unchanged (Duquette & Dorr, 2014) with an overall stagnant accident rate between 2004 and 2013. The leading cause, loss of control in flight (NTSB, 2015b & 2015c) due to pilot inability to recognize approach to stall/spin conditions (NTSB, 2015b & 2016b). In 2013, there were 1,224 GA accidents in the U.S., accounting for 94% of all U.S. aviation accidents and 90% of all U.S. aviation fatalities that year (NTSB, 2015c). Aviation entails multiple challenges for pilots related to task management, procedural errors, perceptual distortions, and cognitive discrepancies. While machine errors in airplanes have continued to decrease over the years, human error still has not (NTSB, 2013).A preliminary analysis of a PC-based, Garmin G1000 flight deck was conducted with 3 professional pilots. Analyses revealed increased task load, opportunities for distraction, confusing perceptual ques, and hindered cognitive performance. Complex usage problems were deeply ingrained in the functionality of the system, forcing pilots to use fallible work arounds, add unnecessary steps, and memorize knob turns or button pushes.Modern computing now has the potential to free GA cockpit designs from knobs, soft keys, or limited display options. Dynamic digital displays might include changes in instrumentation or menu structuring depending on the phase of flight. Airspeed indicators could increase in size to become more salient during landing, simultaneously highlighting pitch angle on Attitude Indicators and automatically decluttering unnecessary information for landing. Likewise, Angle-of-Attack indicators demonstrate a great safety and performance advantage for pilots (Duquette & Dorr, 2014; NTSB, 2015b & 2016b), an instrument typically found in military platforms and now the Icon A5, light-sport aircraft (Icon, 2016).How does the design of pilots environment the cockpit further influence their efficiency and effectiveness? To explore the possibilities for small aircraft displays, a participatory design investigation was conducted with 9 qualified instrument pilots. Aviators designed mock cockpits on a PC using pictorial cutouts of analog (e.g., mechanical dials) and digital (e.g., dynamic displays) controls. Data was analyzed qualitatively and compared to similar work. Finally, a template for GA displays was developed based on pilot input.

Book excerpt: A flight experiment was conducted to assess human factors issues associated with pilot use of traffic displays for approach spacing. Sixteen multi-engine rated pilots participated. Eight flew approaches in a twin-engine Piper Aztec originating in Sanford, ME, and eight flew approaches in the same aircraft originating in Atlantic City, NJ. The spacing target was a Cessna 206. The traffic display was either a Garmin International MX-20™ (the “Basic” Cockpit Display of Traffic Information, or CDTI) or an MX-20™ modified with features to help the pilot monitor the closing rate, the range and ground speed of the traffic-to-follow, and ownship ground speed (Range Monitor). Two other Equipment conditions were Baseline and Autopilot. Pilots successfully used the displays to maintain the assigned spacing on visual and instrument approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thorough description of this increasingly important technology, starting from the development of head-up displays (HUDs), particularly specifications and standards and operational problems associated with HUD use. HUD involvement in spatial disorientation and its use in recognizing and recovering from unusual attitudes is discussed. The book summarizes the design criteria including hardware, software, interface and display criteria. It goes on to outline flight tasks to be used for evaluating HUDs and discusses the impact of HUDs on flight training. Recent work indicates that a HUD may allow a significant reduction in the time required to train a pilot on a particular aircraft, even considering non-HUD-related tasks. The author concludes with a review of unresolved HUD issues and recommendations for further research and provides an impressive bibliography, glossary and index. Within the military aviation sector the book will be of use to industry, research agencies, test pilot schools and air force training establishments. In the civil area regulatory authorities, airlines and industry will also have an increasing interest.

Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted to evaluate, by use of a general aviation simulator and airplane, typical versus experimental concepts of general aviation cockpit environments in an effort to reduce pilot workload and training time to operate an airplane in today's IFR environment and to meet the flight skills required for the instrument rating flight test. Phase I of the experiment examined the flight performance of a group of noninstrument-rated pilot subjects utilizing a cockpit environment typical of aircraft used for single engine instrument flight training. Phase II of the experiment examined the instrument flight performance of a similar group of pilots. Flight training was accomplished in an experimental cockpit environment consisting of improved cockpit displays, controls and instruments to provide maximum assistance to the pilot. Project results indicated a reduced pilot workload and training time to operate an aircraft in an IFR environment. An experimental flight training syllabus was utilized with both pilot groups. Phase III of the experiment examined the flight performance of the Phase II group in a conventional cockpit environment. The report also describes pilot performance and problem areas encountered during training and check flights in both the typical and experimental cockpit environments of the simulator and airplane. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight experiment was conducted to assess human factors issues associated with pilot use of traffic displays for approach spacing. [snip] Pilots successfully used the displays to maintain the assigned spacing on visual and instrument approaches. The spacing deviations were significantly lower when using the displays during visual approaches than when attempting to maintain spacing without a traffic display. [snip] While the traffic display reduced visual reacquisition times, this effect was only found with pilots whose displays showed additional traffic (not only the traffic-to-follow). In general, however, the additional traffic was associated with less time between fixations on the display and higher workload. Subjects appeared to have had difficulty identifying an optimal display range that would simultaneously provide traffic awareness and spacing task performance. The traffic display necessarily requires visual attention and reduces the attention available for scanning the instrument panel and on visual approaches, the outside world. --P. iii.

The spacing deviations were significantly lower when using the displays during visual approaches than when attempting to maintain spacing without a traffic display. The mean spacing deviation during the IFR approaches was less than 0.10 NM for all three equipment conditions (Basic CDTI, Range Monitor, Autopilot), and these mean spacing deviations did not differ significantly. Range Monitor features appeared to particularly benefit the low-hour pilots. While the traffic display reduced visual reacquisition times, this effect was only found with pilots whose displays showed additional traffic (not only the traffic-to-follow).
