Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective radio communication between ATC and pilots has long been recognized as an important element of aviation safety. In recognition of the role miscommunications play in aviation incidents and accidents, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently introduced language proficiency requirements for all flight personnel in all ICAO member states. Using an effective and economical experimental paradigm, the research described here teases apart the complex combination of factors (e.g. speech rate, controller message length, English language proficiency, cognitive workload) believed to contribute to miscommunications between controllers and pilots. Misunderstandings in ATC Communication offers an in-depth report of a seminal study in aviation communication, which until now has only been available in the form of an unpublished dissertation. In addition, it offers a recent extension of that work, the authors’ reflections on the research process, and a thorough review of the aviation communication literature. Graduate students and researchers who wish to address real-world problems will appreciate the simple elegance of the experimental paradigm that has been used to address a wide range of theoretical and applied interdisciplinary research questions. The book will appeal to scholars in the fields of human factors, linguistics, cognitive psychology, applied linguistics and second-language education and assessment. It is also of direct relevance to government and industry decision-makers and operators as they strive to implement the ICAO requirements, and to improve aviation safety.

Book excerpt: Air traffic control (ATC) voice communication is built upon a readback-hearback loop: Controllers send messages to pilots who listen and then recite back their contents. Successful communication requires participants to conduct and understand ATC radiotelephony in the same language. Since inadequate language proficiency was involved in some aviation accidents (e.g., 1996 Charkhi Dadri; 1995 Cali; 1977 Tenerife), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is requiring its contracting states to ensure that ATC personnel and flight crews are proficient communicators of the English language when operating in airspace where the English language is required. This report presents communication problems involving readback errors, breakdowns in communication, and requests for repetition by commercial airline pilots.--P. i.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automation in air traffic control may increase efficiency, but it also raises questions about adequate human control over automated systems. Following on the panel's first volume on air traffic control automation, Flight to the Future (NRC, 1997), this book focuses on the interaction of pilots and air traffic controllers, with a growing network of automated functions in the airspace system. The panel offers recommendations for development of human-centered automation, addressing key areas such as providing levels of automation that are appropriate to levels of risk, examining procedures for recovery from emergencies, free flight versus ground-based authority, and more. The book explores ways in which technology can build on human strengths and compensate for human vulnerabilities, minimizing both mistrust of automation and complacency about its abilities. The panel presents an overview of emerging technologies and trends toward automation within the national airspace systemâ€"in areas such as global positioning and other aspects of surveillance, flight information provided to pilots an controllers, collision avoidance, strategic long-term planning, and systems for training and maintenance. The book examines how to achieve better integration of research and development, including the importance of user involvement in air traffic control. It also discusses how to harmonize the wide range of functions in the national airspace system, with a detailed review of the free flight initiative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword by Captain Daniel Maurino, ICAO: '...Air Traffic Control...will remain a technology-intensive system. People (controllers) must harmoniously interact with technology to contribute to achieve the aviation system’s goals of safe and efficient transportation of passengers and cargo...This book...considers human error and human factors from a contemporary and operational perspective and discusses the parts as well as the whole...I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.' The motivation for writing this book comes from the author’s long standing belief that the needs of Air Traffic Service personnel are inadequately represented in the aviation literature. There are few references to air traffic control in many of the books written for pilots and about pilots and this is also observed at the main international conferences. In line with the ICAO syllabus for human factors training for air traffic controllers, the book covers the main issues in air traffic control, with regard to human performance: physiology including stress, fatigue and shift work problems; psychology with emphasis on human error and its management, social psychology including issues of communication and working in teams, the environment including ergonomic principles and working with new technologies and hardware and software issues including the development of documentation and procedures and a study of the changes brought about by advanced technologies. Throughout the text there are actual examples taken from the air traffic control environment to illustrate the issues discussed. A full bibliography is included for those who want to read beyond these issues. It has been written for all in air traffic services, from ab initio to the boardroom; it is important that the men and women in senior management positions have some knowledge and awareness of the fundamental problems that limit and enhance human performance.

It is often a challenging component of piloting, which is reflected in the number of incidents and accidents involving miscommunication. Our previous field study identified communication problems that disrupt routine communication between pilots and controllers. The present part-task simulation study followed up the field results with a more controlled investigation of communication problems. Pilots flew a simulation in which they were frequently vectored by Air Traffic Control (ATC), requiring intensive communication with the controller. While flying, pilots also performed a secondary visual monitoring task. We examined the influence of message length (one message with four commands vs. two messages with two commands each) and noncommunication workload on communication accuracy and length. Longer ATC messages appeared to overload pilot working memory, resulting in more incorrect or partial readbacks, as well as more requests to repeat the message. The timing between the two short messages also influenced communication. The second message interfered with memory for or response to the first short message when it was delivered too soon after the first message. Performing the secondary monitoring task did not influence communication. Instead, communication reduced monitoring accuracy. Morrow, Daniel and Rodvold, Michelle Unspecified Center NAS2-13210...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 27, 1977, 583 people died when KLM and Pan Am 747s collided on a crowded, foggy runway in Tenerife, the Canary Islands. The cause, a miscommunication between the pilot and the air traffic controller. The pilot radioed, "We are now at takeoff," meaning that the plane was lifting off, but the tower controller misunderstood and thought the plane was waiting on the runway. In Fatal Words, Steven Cushing explains how miscommunication has led to dozens of aircraft disasters, and he proposes innovative solutions for preventing them. He examines ambiguities in language when aviation jargon and colloquial English are mixed, when a word is used that has different meanings, and when different words are used that sound alike. To remedy these problems, Cushing proposes a visual communication system and a computerized voice mechanism to help clear up confusing language. Fatal Words is an accessible explanation of some of the most notorious aircraft tragedies of our time, and it will appeal to scholars in communications, linguistics, and cognitive science, to aviation experts, and to general readers.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,8, University of Flensburg, course: English Worldwide, language: English, abstract: In this modern day and age it has become very important being able to travel from one country to another in a very short time by airplane. Transporting all kinds of cargo across the world without great time loss has become a essential part of our everyday life. Or how would you feel if you weren’t able to buy your bananas and mangos in the supermarket in your hometown anymore? Millions of people travel every day and thousands of containers have to be flown, to guarantee the full supply of all consumers in the world. The extreme increase of air traffic over the years has made it necessary to introduce rules for air traffic controlling, develop new technology and establish standards that are valid for everyone. A major part of air traffic control is the communication (ATCC) and the technology involved in it. It is necessary in the entire world to regulate all sorts of communication between ground controllers and the pilots of aircraft. But why was this communication invented? How is it used? And are there special forms of air traffic control communication? All these questions and an overview of the technological inventions, that are used nowadays in air traffic control, will be given in the following chapters.

Book excerpt: Everything you need to know to talk to air traffic control while flying VFR. Newly updated and revised for ATC's NextGen system of operation, including ADS-B. This second edition adds links to free online videos of the book's flying scenarios. Sit in the left-seat of a simulated Cessna 172 and watch the techniques and procedures of ATC communication come to life in real time. Why is it so hard to put an intelligible sentence together when you key the microphone of your aircraft radio? Communication on the aviation radio band is complicated. The language of air traffic control is specialized. You must speak precisely and efficiently, without all the filler and extra words we use in everyday conversation. Your aircraft and air traffic around you continually move forward. You cannot put the situation on pause while you mentally catch up. It's no wonder so many student pilots, and even certified pilots, become brain locked when they key the microphone to speak. The mental, and even physical demands of speaking on the aircraft radio are ridiculously high. Learning how to meet those demands takes training, patience, and practice; a lot of hands-on practice. Radio Mastery for VFR Pilots is the training and the practice you need to talk confidently to Air Traffic Control (ATC). From VFR flight in uncontrolled airspace through VFR flight at busy, controlled airports, every situation is covered with real-life examples and plenty of humor. Best of all, each chapter concludes with hands-on practical exercises. Practice begins with chair-flying radio procedures at home and concludes with practice in your aircraft. If you have been flying miles out of your way simply to avoid controlled airspace, Radio Mastery for VFR Pilots is the solution to your problem. If you have avoided contacting ATC for flight following because you believe it is "too much work," this book will change your mind. Whether you are just learning to fly, or you are a certified pilot, Radio Mastery for VFR pilots is going to open the door to ATC and make you a skilled, confident communicator on the aircraft radio.
