Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pilgrim Journeys: The Commandments explores the very heart of Jesus' teaching in 40 short daily reflections for Lent 2024. In three of the four gospels, Jesus is asked which commandment is the most important and answers with two: you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength, and you shall love your neighbour as yourself. We are called into a deep relationship of love with God who has made us, and to live a life of love with our neighbours: those who are like us and those who are not. Pilgrim Journeys: The Commandments will help you explore the practicalities of this Way of Love and the meaning of the commandments for today. Helpful for those new to the Bible, those preparing for baptism or confirmation and those who want to become more Christ-like in all they are and do, it offers something for all. Each day provides you with a short reflection on a Bible reading, an invitation to pray and a suggestion of how you might respond. The Pilgrim Journeys booklets are ideal daily companions for anyone seeking to grow in the Christian faith. They are suitable for those preparing for baptism or confirmation - including those using the Pilgrim discipleship course - but can be used by anyone at any stage of their Christian journey.

Book Synopsis Sacred Journeys in the Counter-Reformation by : Elizabeth C. Tingle
Download or read book Sacred Journeys in the Counter-Reformation written by Elizabeth C. Tingle and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Journeys in the Counter-Reformation examines long-distance pilgrimages to ancient, international shrines in northwestern Europe in the two centuries after Luther. In this region in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, saints’ cults and pilgrimage were frequently contested, more so than in the Mediterranean world. France, the Low Countries and the British Isles were places of disputation and hostility between Protestant and Catholic; sacred landscapes and journeys came under attack and in some regions, were outlawed by the state. Taking as case studies hugely popular medieval shrines such as Compostela, the Mont Saint-Michel and Lough Derg, the impact of Protestant criticism and Catholic revival on shrines, pilgrims’ motives and experiences is examined through life writings, devotional works and institutional records. The central focus is that of agency in religious change: what drove spiritual reform and what were its consequences for the ‘ordinary’ Catholic? This is explored through concepts of the religious self, holy materiality, and sacred space.
Book Synopsis The Seductions of Pilgrimage by : Michael A. Di Giovine
Download or read book The Seductions of Pilgrimage written by Michael A. Di Giovine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seductions of Pilgrimage explores the simultaneously attractive and repellent, beguiling and alluring forms of seduction in pilgrimage. It focuses on the varied discursive, imaginative, and practical mechanisms of seduction that draw individual pilgrims to a pilgrimage site; the objects, places, and paradigms that pilgrims leave behind as they embark on their hyper-meaningful travel experience; and the often unforeseen elements that lead pilgrims off their desired course. Presenting the first comprehensive study of the role of seduction on individual pilgrims in the study of pilgrimage and tourism, it will appeal to scholars of anthropology, cultural geography, tourism, heritage, and religious studies.

Book excerpt: This enduring work of Russian spirituality has charmed countless people with its tale of a nineteenth-century peasant's quest for the secret of prayer. Readers follow this anonymous pilgrim as he treks over the Steppes in search of the answer to the one compelling question: How does one pray constantly? Through his journeys, and under the tutelage of a spiritual father, he becomes gradually more open to the promptings of God, and sees joy and plenty wherever he goes. Ultimately, he discovers the different meanings and methods of prayer as he travels to his ultimate destination, Jerusalem. The Way of a Pilgrim is a humble story ripe for renewed appreciation today. The recent changes in Russia have revealed the great religious traditions of that land, and this work, freshly translated for modern times, is among the finest examples of those centuries-old traditions.
Book Synopsis Reading the Margins by : Michael J Gilmour
Download or read book Reading the Margins written by Michael J Gilmour and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishers. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible and theology are contested spaces, battlegrounds where participants guard entrenched beliefs against perceived threats. But literature, observes novelist Salman Rushdie, opens the universe. It expands what we perceive and understand, and ultimately what we are. Writers make our world feel larger and more inclusive. When other forces push in the direction of narrowness, bigotry, tribalism, cultism, and war, fiction encourages understanding, sympathy, and identification with others. Reading the Margins invites readers to immerse themselves in imaginary worlds, and to pursue visions of justice and compassion. Whether stories about poverty, empire, war, or the environment, the writers considered raise moral questions and often, in the process--even unwittingly--deepen our understanding of biblical calls for kindness and mercy. Reading the Margins offers a kind of commentary on biblical ethics. Using Matthew's Beatitudes and sheep and goats parable as an organizing principle, Gilmour argues there is much to learn about Jesus's ""peacemakers"" and call to feed the hungry from aspirational fiction and poetry.
