Book Synopsis Prud'hon: 68 Drawings by : Phillip Whilley
Download or read book Prud'hon: 68 Drawings written by Phillip Whilley and published by Osmora Incorporated. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758 – 1823) was a French Romantic painter and draughtsman best known for his allegorical paintings and portraits. Prud'hon's artistic style contrasted starkly with the dominant version of Neoclassicism under Jacques-Louis David. His paintings were based on classical texts and ancient prototypes, but his dreaminess and melancholy were more akin to Romanticism. Prud'hon's drawings, often black chalk on blue paper, were not widely admired in his lifetime. Other artists during his time used these combined materials to study the figure, but Prud'hon took the form to new heights throughout his career. Although sidelined in his life, Prud'hon's insights in drawing would beckon future generations with their enigmatic testimony to sublime beauty. His technique evolved into a beautiful style that attracted many fans up to present day.

Book Synopsis Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art by : Darius A. Spieth
Download or read book Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art written by Darius A. Spieth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Book Synopsis Language of the Body by : John Elderfield
Download or read book Language of the Body written by John Elderfield and published by Harry N. Abrams. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French artist Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823) is best known as a painter of mythological and allegorical subjects that impressed his younger contemporaries Theodore Gericault and Eugene Delacroix. Fully as deserving of attention is a series of exquisite chalk studies - known as academies - that he made throughout his career. These drawings of male and female nudes - many of which have never before been published - are the focus of this beautiful and unique book. In his text, John Elderfield first discusses Prud'hon's life and work, examining the complexities and contradictions of his career and his singular place in the art of his time, including his role in the creation of the modern female nude. Then he considers the drawings themselves. Following the text are fifty-seven of Prud'hon's finest drawings - reproduced in full color - carefully selected and arranged by Robert Gordon to unfold in a visual display of gesture and form. The book concludes with the author's notes and a selected bibliography.
