Book Synopsis Jane Means Appleton Pierce by : Ann Covell
Download or read book Jane Means Appleton Pierce written by Ann Covell and published by Hamilton Books. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When introverted Jane Appleton and charismatic Franklin Pierce first met, they fell in love immediately, despite being complete opposites. Jane’s pious family vetoed any relationship between them, and it was eight years before they finally married. Their life together was a loving though often difficult one, as frail Jane adapted to the uncertainties of political life that climaxed in ostensible deceit and tragedy just prior to Franklin’s presidency. This book offers insight into the dynasty to which Jane belonged and profiles earlier generations, providing a wider perception of her family’s history. Through family letters and anecdotes, it details Jane’s complex life and defines the social and health features of the era. Aspects of Jane’s childhood that may have accounted for her melancholic nature and inhibitions are revealed. This book also explores the truths behind the many myths surrounding this tragic first lady.

Book Synopsis The Memoir of Joseph Pierce Braud, Md: His Life Journey on the Gravel Road and Beyond by : Joseph Pierce Braud
Download or read book The Memoir of Joseph Pierce Braud, Md: His Life Journey on the Gravel Road and Beyond written by Joseph Pierce Braud and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir highlights a compelling story of tragedy and triumph during the Jim Crow and separate but equal era in the Deep South. The book traces the evolution of Joseph Pierce Braud, from his humble birthplace in A-Bend in Ascension Parish to his graduation from Howard University Medical School in 1958 and thereafter. Braud overcame the death of his father and helped support the family by scrapping rice and potatoes and shining shoes on Carrollton Street in New Orleans. During the 1930s and 1940s, his family received only $18 per month for seven siblings. Before earning his medical degree from Howard University Medical School in 1958, Braud helped his siblings obtain a college education. Subsequently, he opened his medical practice in New Orleans and held a staff position at Flint-Goodridge Hospital of Dillard University. From Brookstown with its 300 residents, Dr. Braud paved the way for six members of his Braud Family Group to become Medical Doctors, including (14) BS degrees, (4) Masters Degrees, (1) Juris Doctorate, (1) Doctor of Philosophy, and (1) nurse. Find out how Braud beat the odds to earn his education and pave the way for other Blacks to enter the medical field.
Download or read book Shanghai Pierce written by Chris Emmett and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am Shanghai Pierce, Webster in Cattle, by God, Sir.” And, in truth, he was. Part rascal, part gentleman, part poseur, part just himself—of all the colorful Texas figures following the Civil War none was as loud, garish, and funny as Shanghai Pierce, who left Rhode Island penniless and became one of the Big Pasture Men of southern Texas. At six foot, four, Shanghai Pierce was big, rich, and selfish, but he could also be kind. His cunning was seldom matched, and business, whether it involved a quarter-million-dollar loan or a twenty-five cent pair of socks, was his lifeblood. In recreating the life of Abel Head (“Shanghai”) Pierce, Chris Emmett unfolds the entire dramatic spectacle of the time and place in which Pierce lived. An arresting figure, Pierce was a symbol of his era. His statue, which he himself erected in Hawley, Texas, is still a perfect memorial to, and a reminder of, westward-moving America. Shanghai Pierce was a man who pulled up his roots and fled to the West, where he found there was ample room and opportunity. First published in 1953, Shanghai Pierce: A Fair Likeness won the 1953 Summerfield G. Roberts award of the Texas Institute of Letters for the best book on the Republic of Texas.

Book Synopsis Numerical Analysis of Pierce-type Electron Guns by : Richard T. Close
Download or read book Numerical Analysis of Pierce-type Electron Guns written by Richard T. Close and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital-computer programs have been used to analyze four Pierce-type electron guns. The numerical analysis has been very successful in identifying the deficiencies of the Pierce-design method when extrapolated to high perveances. It also has been possible to obtain radial phase-space diagrams for the beams from each of the electron guns studied. From these diagrams and by the use of several other computer programs, an estimate of the transverse energy distribution of the electron beams has been made. It has been found that the major contribution to the random transverse energy must be of nonthermal origin. (Author).
Book Synopsis Charles Clifton of Pierce-Arrow by : Roger J. Sherman
Download or read book Charles Clifton of Pierce-Arrow written by Roger J. Sherman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As head of Pierce-Arrow in its formative years, Colonel Charles Clifton played a significant role in the development of a venerated automobile manufacturer. Roundly respected in his time, Clifton was a force in automobile trade associations for nearly a quarter century but slipped into undeserved obscurity after his death in 1928. This biography covers Charles Clifton's role in the earliest conflicts and achievements of the American automobile industry and the growth of the Pierce-Arrow company, using industry publications and periodicals of the time as well as recollections of his associates and contemporaries. It details his wider importance in shaping the industry itself, especially his role in the controversies surrounding the Selden patent and the patent cross-licensing agreement between auto manufacturers. The impact of World War I on the industry and Clifton's activities responding to the vast operational changes the war brought about conclude the book.

Book Synopsis Reading Tamora Pierce: 'The Protector of the Small' by : John Lennard
Download or read book Reading Tamora Pierce: 'The Protector of the Small' written by John Lennard and published by Humanities-Ebooks. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tamora Pierce is a prolific and very unusual modern master of fantasy for young adults and the first such author to appear regularly on the New York Times bestseller lists. The four books making up The Protector of the Small are the 9th to 12th (of 15) novels set in Tortall, and follow the progress of Keladry of Mindelan from the first openly female page in more than a century to her attainment of Knighthood and introduction to war. The Notes cover Tamora Pierce's life and work; the world of Tortall (including the geography, cast, and neighbouring cultures); the strange menagerie of immortal creatures who may be friend or foe; the pantheon of interfering multicultural god/desse/s; knighthood; and the school series format that Pierce adapts. The well-illustrated Annotations cover unusual words, ideas, and objects mentioned, real-world cultural, historical, and literary references, and the major thematic issues that develop throughout the quartet. First Test, Page, Squire, and Lady Knight are all covered on a chapter-by-chapter basis. The Essay considers The Protector of the Small as a revisioning of Song of the Lioness, the structure of the quartet, and the nature of Blayce and the killing devices. A Note on Fanfiction surveys the enormous Tortall archive of fanfic as a resource for readers of the quartet, and a Bibliography provides checklists both of Pierce's works and of writing about her. Tamora Pierce read the book in manuscript and has generously allowed her comments to be published, including new extracanonical facts about Jump, women in combat, the death magic that powers the killing devices, and much more.
