Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Japanese Art Arthur Morrison collection of Japanese art, if you wish to feel the real old Japanese humanity and love that our ancient masters inspired into their work. TO be sure, none of the things exhibited there, small or large, good or poor, are so - called exhibition pictures, which are Often a game of artistic charlatans. In real Japanese art you should not look for variety of subjects; but when you find an astonishing richness of execution, certainly it is the time when your eyes begin to Open toward another sort of as ceticism in art. How glad I am that our Japanese art, at least in the Olden time, never degenerated into a mechanical art! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C of Japanese Art Hen each of the arts of Japan richly deserves a volume to itself, and when great works have been devoted to some, it will not be altogether out of place to issue this cheap book which deals with these arts, a book which the author believes will be eminently useful to the collector of the treasures of Old Japan. Please think of it like that. Does not profess to be an exhaustive work, too many subject ire consic red to make that possible, but in some ways, whr I will be discovered by the reader, the book is unique, especially in the marks supplied, which have the utmost value. Those who buy solely and rightly for the artistic qualities and merit of every object, and those who buy for profit, again rightly, may receive some guidance from the sale-prices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art critic, author, and poet Sadakichi Hartmann was born to a German father and a Japanese mother, to whom he dedicated Japanese Art. His dual cultural heritage gives him the unique position of presenting Asian art with Western authority. However, he was quick to clarify that this popular volume is "not so much a book for experts and connoisseurs - too much has been written in that strain - but for those persons who would like to become more intimately acquainted with Japanese Art, but have been deterred from doing so by the want of a book which would accomplish this, without obliging them to turn specialists." This could explain why this particular work of the well-known critic became a hit when it was published in 1903. Hartmann used an easy, conversational tone in discussing early religious paintings in the history of Japanese art, as well as the artistic works produced during the feudal and renaissance periods. He also covered the realistic movement, ornamental arts, Japanese architecture and sculpture, and its influence on Western civilization. The pages of this volume are not covered only with text - they also feature a good number of illustrations of the key components of Japan's art heritage. Hartmann's Japanese Art is recommended reading for those wishing to learn more about the art in the Land of the Rising Sun without having to deal with highly technical or scholarly nit-picking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Color-Prints of Old Japan What are they? Is a question often asked by those looking for the first time at a collection of Japanese prints. To say that they are chromoxylographs, is to give an answer strictly accurate. But as this is more concise than simple, it may be well to say in non-technical, popular language that they are prints in colors from engraved wooden blocks, as many blocks and impressions ordinarily being required as there are colors. In Europe towards the end of the eighteenth century similar prints were produced, but as their reception by the public was not such as to encourage their makers, there was no development of the art comparable with that in Japan in the same century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Masters of Ukioye: A Complete Historical Description of Japanese Paintings and Color Prints of the Genre School IN arranging a chronological exhibition of works by the Masters of the Ukioye, or Popular School of Japanese Artists, Mr. Ketcham has rendered a service to students and lovers of Japanese Art for which they should be very grateful. That the exhibition has been undertaken partly for commercial reasons does not lessen the obligation. In addition to the selections made from Mr. Ketcham' s extensive stock, it includes also, through the kindness of their owners in loaning them for the occasion, a large proportion of the finest and most beautiful works belonging to private collections in the United States. Nothing like it has ever been attempted before. For the first time does a connected series of paintings and prints by all of the leading artists of this school, hung together in proper sequence, make it possible to gain a comprehensive view of the history of Ukioye art through all the phases of its rise, development, and decay. Especially is this true as regards the N119}: z'kzye, or color prints from wood blocks, which are the most distinctive product of the school. Here may be seen rare proof-impressions from early blocks, which are printed in solid black, with no atternpt at gradations of tone. The several varieties of hand-colored prints are represented by many fine examples. Then in the Nishikbte proper may be traced the growing mastery of the artists over the resources of the printer's craft. The works of the earlier men are notable for combined vigor of conception and sweetness of line, rather than for especial beauty of color. There is, however, a charm in their quiet simplicity which is lacking in the works of later periods; and some of the prints for which, in addition to the black outline, but two tint blocks were used, are exquisitely lovely in color, as well as wonderful achievements in design. After Torii Kiyomitsu began the use of a third color-block, the rivalry between many able artists resulted in rapid prog ress, until the art reached its highest development in strength and beauty of design, in richness and variety of color, and in perfection of printing, in the time of the great master Torii Kiyonaga and his contemporaries. The works shown in this exhibition make it possible to follow this development throughout, and to trace the subsequent decline of the art, at first gradual, then more rapid, as the creative impulse which stimulated the masters of the eighteenth century died out, and little was left beyond mere delight intechnical proficiency. The brief renaissance due to the genius of Hokusai and Hiroshige is illustrated by some superb examples of their finest produc tions. That few works of their contemporaries and followers are shown is not because the art became extinct after the death of these men, but for the reason that their aesthetic value is so small.
