Book excerpt: I began this book four years ago. It began as a way of helping me heal from my first real heartbreak. Writing had always been my outlet for personal thoughts and expressions of love, being very shy, this came in handy. When I began writing this book, it began as a simple book of love notes aimed at those who found themselves in the same position as myself; hoping that at least one love lost individual would be able to relate, at the time, this was all I wanted. Once I felt that I had poured enough of my pain into the pages I laid down my pen. There was nothing more for me to write, so I thought. After a while, I began to notice that my situation hadn't changed, I was still moving from job to job. With only an 11th grade education there wasn't really much I could do except to go back to school but that had been years ago. I really felt that I was better off teaching myself. I would look for things to write about, digest them, analyze them amd put them in my own words, how I saw them and what I felt. This is when it began to take shape far beyond just words of heartache. I could see things that no one else saw!

Beginning with seminal works by such writers as Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim and culminating in contemporary fiction, autobiography, and poetry, Hip Hop literature is exerting the same kind of influence as Hip Hop music, fashion, and culture. Through more than 180 alphabetically arranged entries, this encyclopedia surveys the world of Hip Hop literature and places it in its social and cultural contexts. Entries cite works for further reading, and a bibliography concludes the volume. Coverage includes authors, genres, and works, as well as on the musical artists, fashion designers, directors, and other figures who make up the context of Hip Hop literature. Entries cite works for further reading, and the encyclopedia concludes with a selected, general bibliography. Students in literature classes will value this guide to an increasingly popular body of literature, while students in social studies classes will welcome its illumination of American cultural diversity.

Book excerpt: Our generation made hip-hop. But hip-hop also made us. Why are suburban kids referring to their subdivision as “block”? Why has the pimp become a figure of male power? Why has dodging the feds become an act of honor long after one has made millions as a legitimate artist? What happens when fantasy does more harm than reality?—From the Introduction Hip-hop culture has been in the mainstream for years. Suburban teens take their fashion cues from Diddy and expect to have Three 6 Mafia play their sweet-sixteen parties. From the “Boogie Down Bronx” to the heartland, hip-hop’s influence is major. But has the movement taken a wrong turn? In Beats Rhymes and Life, hot journalists Kenji Jasper and Ytasha Womack have focused on what they consider to be the most prominent symbols of the genre: the fan, the turntable, the ice, the dance floor, the shell casing, the buzz, the tag, the whip, the ass, the stiletto, the (pimp’s) cane, the coffin, the cross, and the corner. Each is the focus of an essay by a journalist who skillfully dissects what their chosen symbol means to them and to the hip-hop community. The collection also features many original interviews with some of rap’s biggest stars talking candidly about how they connect to the culture and their fans. With a foreword by the renowned scholar Michael Eric Dyson, Beats Rhymes and Life is an innovative and daring look at the state of the hip-hop nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineties, young people were encouraged by their movie and music idols to follow their dreams. It was a time when grunge-loving kids replaced corduroy pants and plaid shirts with baggy pants and bandanas. Nintindos were replaced by Xbox and PlayStation systems. Big dial televisions and box computers were swapped for laptops and flat-screen plasmas. As millennials grew up, they would become the last generation to live free of dependence on technology. Alexander Cristini was one of those millennials. In a unique memoir, Alexander intertwines the five pieces of his inner self—Psychedelic, Philosophy, Plumbing, Prophecy, and Peacemaker—to recapture an era through the eyes of a child. As Alexander brings others back in time, he shares interesting historical facts accompanied by personal anecdotes that reveal his experience taking magic mushrooms at age twelve and discovering a new way of looking at life and nature; his philosophies about health, the influence of rap music, and the wise individuals who became part of his thought processes; and his views about spirituality as both a child and man. Five Pieces of Solace combines historical facts with personal stories to call out to a generation of people to question, examine, and contemplate their own lives and purposes.

Book excerpt: "Raw, authoritative, and unflinching ... An elaborately detailed, darkly surprising, definitive history of the LA gangsta rap era." -- Kirkus, starred review A monumental, revealing narrative history about the legendary group of artists at the forefront of West Coast hip-hop: Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur. Amid rising gang violence, the crack epidemic, and police brutality, a group of unlikely voices cut through the chaos of late 1980s Los Angeles: N.W.A. Led by a drug dealer, a glammed-up producer, and a high school kid, N.W.A gave voice to disenfranchised African Americans across the country. And they quickly redefined pop culture across the world. Their names remain as popular as ever -- Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. Dre soon joined forces with Suge Knight to create the combustible Death Row Records, which in turn transformed Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur into superstars. Ben Westhoff explores how this group of artists shifted the balance of hip-hop from New York to Los Angeles. He shows how N.W.A.'s shocking success lead to rivalries between members, record labels, and eventually a war between East Coast and West Coast factions. In the process, hip-hop burst into mainstream America at a time of immense social change, and became the most dominant musical movement of the last thirty years. At gangsta rap's peak, two of its biggest names -- Tupac and Biggie Smalls -- were murdered, leaving the surviving artists to forge peace before the genre annihilated itself. Featuring extensive investigative reporting, interviews with the principal players, and dozens of never-before-told stories, Original Gangstas is a groundbreaking addition to the history of popular music.

Book excerpt: Explores the flourishing, passionate forms of leadership emerging from women on behalf of the earth and community • Contains more than 30 essays from successful women leaders, including writers Alice Walker and Eve Ensler, psychiatrist Jean Shinoda Bolen, holistic doctor Rachel Naomi Remen, hip-hop performer Rha Goddess, and famous tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill • From Bioneers president and cofounder Nina Simons Many today find themselves being called toward greater leadership on behalf of the Earth, toward leadership sourced from their inner authority and inspired by what they love and are dedicated to protect, transform, and strengthen. Those successfully heeding this call have embraced the qualities previously relegated to the “feminine”--inner awareness, collaboration, relational intelligence, respect for the sacred and generosity--and married them to the best of their “masculine” attributes to create a new form of leadership more inspiring, inviting, and effective for transforming how we live on Earth and with each other. This anthology presents more than 30 essays from eminent women trailblazers--such as author Alice Walker, psychiatrist Jean Shinoda Bolen, playwright Eve Ensler, holistic doctor Rachel Naomi Remen, biologist Janine Benyus, hip-hop performer Rha Goddess, and famous tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill--as well as lesser-known but equally influential leaders--such as social entrepreneur Judy Wicks, philanthropic activist Kathy LeMay, food justice advocate LaDonna Redmond, and media educator Sofia Quintero. Their narratives explore how they cultivated their leadership impulses and their “feminine” strengths, reinventing leadership to prioritize community, collaboration, the environment, and the common good. Illuminating a path to progressive environmental and social change, their passionate stories of joyful, creative, collaborative, and sacred leadership ignite within each reader the power to help cocreate a healthy, peaceful, just, and sustainable world.

Book excerpt: Anny Donewald had a seemingly charmed childhood as the daughter of a top basketball coach. Then, when she was thirteen, one of her father's players began to abuse her, setting her on a path of self-destruction which led ultimately into the explosive world of the sex industry. After Anny competed in an amateur night at a strip club, she found herself sucked into the subculture of drugs, money, and prostitution, dancing in Las Vegas and Chicago's hottest sex venues. But the fantasy of fistfuls of hundred-dollar bills quickly turned into the reality of bloodstains on bathroom floors, during nights with clients in luxurious hotels. At an emotional breaking point, pondering the termination of her unborn son, Anny reached the gates of her personal hell. The atheist did the unthinkable, and cried out to God. This captivating memoir reveals how women from all walks of life can find themselves trapped in the sex trade and illustrates that God loves them no matter what. Dancing for the Devil is a heart-breaking and fascinating story of darkness, grace, and ultimately, the healing power of love.

Book excerpt: HIP-HOP (AND OTHER THINGS) is about, as it were, rap, but also some other things. It's a smart, fun, funny, insightful book that spends the entirety of its time celebrating what has become the most dominant form of music these past two and a half decades. Tupac is in there. Jay Z is in there. Missy Elliott is in there. Drake is in there. Pretty much all of the big names are in there, as are a bunch of the smaller names, too. There's art from acclaimed illustrator Arturo Torres, there are infographics and footnotes; there's all kinds of stuff in there. Some of the chapters are serious, and some of the chapters are silly, and some of the chapters are a combination of both things. All of them, though, are treated with the care and respect that they deserve. HIP-HOP (AND OTHER THINGS) is the third book in the (And Other Things) series. The first two—Basketball (And Other Things) and Movies (And Other Things)—were both #1 New York Times bestsellers.

Book excerpt: To Create is a collection of illuminating interviews with an eclectic set of black artists—including Harry Belafonte, Method Man, Nikki Giovanni, Edwidge Danticat, Edward P. Jones, Booker T. Mattison, and more—as conducted by the writer, entrepreneur, educator, and consultant Felicia Pride. This is an honest, inspiring series of conversations in which Pride and her fellow artists talk openly about the challenges and rewards of working creatively across a multitude of platforms. Over the course of dozens of frank discussions with writers, activists, and media creators, Pride elicits sincere firsthand perspectives on the struggle to find—or to create, if it's not there—a niche for one's voice in the media landscape. The personable and fluid interview style allows the artists to follow their threads of dialogue to unique, intimate revelations. The interviews transition smoothly between similar themes, touching on the do-it-yourself mentality of creating; practical musings on media careers; as well as theoretical discussions on art, legacy, and community. Additionally, many of the artists, musicians, and authors discuss finding career longevity through a multi-platform approach, the connection between the personal and political in art, and the ongoing conflict between art and commerce. This is one of the most candid and diversified interview collections within the African-American community, but it is also a stirring look into what it means to be a creator.
