Book excerpt: A cook. A speech therapist. A credit union executive. A fashion model-turned-cancer activist. A secretary. A homemaker -- all were mothers. Nineteen lives cut short -- women from all walks of life, hailing from every corner of the United States and a province in Canada. Some were homemakers with little or no formal education; others were career women with college degrees and accomplished resumes. Regardless of their backgrounds, all these women share one thing in common: an addiction to smoking that culminated in an array of illnesses and their untimely demise. Their stories, told by their surviving daughters, pay tribute to the mothers they lost, often at pivotal moments in the daughters' lives, and the legacy they continue to live with every day. A Breath Away offers a powerful anti-smoking message that goes beyond the statistics to today's generation of girls and young women, to think twice before lighting up.

Book excerpt: Pickleball has lately become all the rage in America. Indeed, across the globe. Once a sport for older racquet sports enthusiasts who needed a slower version of their favorite sport. Now youngsters are picking up the game, playing in pro tournaments, making a good living from pickleball. And with the growing popularity of pickleball has come the need for lessons and clinics to teach the mechanics of the sport. I used to teach tennis but when I found pickleball about five years ago, I put away my tennis racquets and have used a pickleball paddle ever since. In my opinion, pickleball is a game of chess compared to tennis which is a game of checkers. Once you master the stroke mechanics of pickleball then the challenge is to master the mental game. That is where the fun begins. I have been a pickleball instructor now for three years. And I do focus on the mechanics of the game when I teach. But I go beyond that to teach the mental aspects of the game which separates the good players from the excellent players. I’ve been encouraged by many of my students to write a book that details some of these mental aspects of the game of pickleball. And when I play in tournaments or recreationally, I often get comments like ‘how can you be so calm on the court’ or ‘you make this game look effortless’. One of my partners complimented me in a recent tournament by saying ‘thanks for your Zen attitude on the court’. Thus, the inspiration for this book. If you can remain calm, remain focused, remain relaxed during a game of pickleball, you will find much success, both internally and externally, I think if you take the messages in this book to heart, you will also be happier and enjoy the game of pickleball more. In my opinion, pickleball can be a metaphor for life. A Zen approach to the challenges we face can allow us to face adversity with a sense of calm and focus that will make us much happier on our journey through life.

Book excerpt: The ultimate keepsake for every pickleball fan—from a dink shot to the kitchen, everything a pickleballer needs to know in this fully illustrated guide to the world’s greatest recreational sport, packed with lots of joy, good humor, and even a little bit of wisdom. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. Easy to learn, but impossible to master, it’s no wonder that nearly 5 million people nationwide have picked up their paddles and taken to the court. But people aren’t just dabbling in this up-and-coming activity, they are obsessed; some hit the court as many as five, six, even seven times a week. As Vanity Fair put it, pickleball has “won over everyone, from Leonardo DiCaprio to your grandparents.” Pickleball Is Life is the first book of its kind celebrating the weird and wonderful world of pickleball. It will take readers on a journey from the sport’s quirky origins to its modern-day cult following. Along the way, visual info graphs and illustrations will share even more pickleball knowledge, including etiquette tips, a DIY court, obscure rules, and pointers for (good-natured) trash talk. Also included are interviews with members of the three founding families from Bainbridge Island who are still very much involved in the sport and its growth. People of all ages, athletic abilities, and backgrounds have fallen in love with pickleball. Sure, it’s a good workout, but it’s also a cheerful way to interact with others—something folks crave now more than ever. So, whether they’re uninitiated or obsessed, this book will help readers find even more to love about the world’s greatest sport.

After a series of injuries stopped my recreational tennis play, and my retirement from a lifetime of coaching and teaching tennis, I tried golf. It didn't take long to realize it was not an easy endeavor. Someone said, "You can't learn anything from a golf book, but you have to read a lot of golf books to find that out!" I found the gurus of golf instruction: Ledbetter, Pelz, and Hogan, who was said to have written the book with the secret! I did find one that really attracted me but in a somewhat different way.

Book excerpt: Much to his own surprise, longtime newspaper humor writer Frank Cerabino has fallen under the spell of pickleball, the fastest growing sport in America. In this funny compilation of essays on the sport, Cerabino writes a personal story about his journey into becoming a pickleball evangelist. He lays out the charms and allure of this funny-sounding game that looks like ping-pong played on a small tennis court. And he invites the reader to pick up a paddle and discover, as he did, the joys of saying, "Zero, zero, two," every day. This book, Cerabino writes, is not a "how to" book on pickleball, but a "why to" book on the game. It serves as a perfect intro for a pickleball-curious reader and anyone looking to understand why pickleball is surging in its popularity.

Book excerpt: Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, in large part because it is so accessible. It seems like everyone can play it, regardless of age or athletic ability. Bursts of high-intensity effort during a game, however, can lead to injuries. Overstretching to reach a ball, taking a tumble during a point, or not adequately warming up before a game is all too common. While it is easy to pick up a paddle and learn to play, it can be challenging to know how to prevent an injury. For this reason, PICKLEBALL FOR LIFE: PREVENT INJURY, PLAY YOUR BEST & ENJOY THE GAME is an important resource for all pickleball players. Coauthored by a personal fitness trainer and a physician, this book offers needed guidance to players at all skill levels and entry points. PICKLEBALL FOR LIFE helps readers through everything from a proper nutritional plan, pickleball training activities, and a head-to-toe approach for injury prevention to a brief pre- and postgame routine. The book also points to additional helpful resources, like videos that demonstrate appropriate exercises. With its easy-to-read conversational tone, readers will feel as though a personal trainer is helping them reach their unique pickleball goals. "Reynolds & Saint share a totally engaging, personalized, honest and insightful guide to growing any players enjoyment of and benefit from pickle ball, with tools toward avoiding injury." - Robert Hogikyan "This short book is full of tips that will help you to improve your overall health, reduce chance of injury, and improve your game, while maximizing your enjoyment of this amazing sport!" - Larry Junck "Pickleball for Life is a concise guide to keeping you flexible and mobile not just for a better dinking game but to keep you on the court into your 80s." - Christy Howden, Co-owner of Wolverine Pickleball "Reynolds & Saint place personal training at your fingertips. Their instruction not only improves your game but offers a safer solution to reduce pain after you play." - Vineet Chopra
