Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Psychology The scheme of the nervous system and its functions that the writer has sketched is based upon a careful study of the best authorities; but it is only fair to warn the reader that great differences of opinion upon many fundamental principles still obtain among these authorities. It seemed better to adopt, and apply consistently, a workable scheme of the ele mentary nervous functions than to confuse the reader by frequent references to these differences of Opinion. A first attempt, such as this book represents, must show many imperfections; but the more imperfect it is, the more effectively will it call for improvement. Moreover, it is especially true in this field of inquiry that the solution of many problems is intimately bound up with their relation to other groups of facts, facts that often appear remote and disconnected; so that the wider View is necessary, if we are to find the right path. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Physiological: Psychology, a Text-Book of Mental Science IN the early part of 1887 I published the results of sev eral years of research, in a book entitled Elements of Physiological Psychology. The very gratifying reception almost immediately given to this work showed an extended and profound interest in the experimental and physiological study of mental phenomena. The signs of this interest have continued unabated until the present time; and the book has been widely adopted, both in this country and abroad, for private reading and for the instruction of classes. Although the Elements, etc. Did not enter into the detailed history of discoveries and discussion of theories in the field of physiological psychology, it was necessarily somewhat voluminous and technical. For it aimed to give a summary of the entire field and thus to render accessible the data and conclusions to be found, separated, only in scores or hundreds Of larger and smaller monographs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physiological Psychology: A Treatise of the Activities and Nature of the Mind From the Physical and Experimental Point of View 2. Perhaps the most common definition of psychology, up to the present time, has regarded it as the science of the human soul. If this definition had always been given, on beginning the pursuit of the science, only in a provisional way, and with the implied or open confession that it is the business of psychology itself to de monstrate the existence of a particular entity called the soul, and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Physiological Psychology, Vol. 5 The psychology which I shall present to you is not that old psychology which sought to investigate psychical phenomena in a more or less speculative way. That psychology has long been abandoned by those whose method of thought is that of the natural sciences, and empirical psychology has justly taken its place. Physiological psychology constitutes a part of empirical psychology. Let us start from an antithesis which has long been traditional in philosophy, and to which psychology in particular owes its existence as an independent science. This is the antithesis of material phenomena and psychical phenomena. We Shall purposely avoid the terms mind and matter, since each introduces a new and at first purely hypothetical unit instead of the manifold data primarily furnished us. For the present also we shall not investigate whether the material and the psychical data are equally primary or not. It shall be reserved rather for the close of our researches to decide whether the material and the psychical are entirely independent of each other; or whether the former is a function of the latter as the Spiritualistic philosopher assumes; or finally whether the latter is merely a function of the former as the materialist conversely assumes. For. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on Physiological Psychology The great and fundamental mystery of life, indeed, consists in the relations of consciousness and of that dynamical agency which we designate volition, or the will, to the functions of the special senses, and those of the encephalic ganglia, Which connect man as a sentient, percipient, and intelligent being, with his own bodily organization and with the world without. For, while it is no longer a matter of dispute that the encephalon is the material organ of the mind, where the ultimate molecular changes precede mental states, and-from whence the mandates of the will issue, it has been well observed, by an acute meta physician, that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of Mind: Being the First Part of a Third Edition, Revised, Enlarged and in Great Part Rewritten, of "the Physiology and Pathology of Mind" The physiological method has made such great way that it stands not now in need either of de fence or advocacy; and the result cannot fail to be, as regards this book, that the exposition of its merits, made with all the vehemence of youthful enthusiasm, must look like a superfluous assertion of claims which are not seriously contested, while the record of acquisitions which have become part of the general body of thought certainly requires not the aggressive prominence which it had. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physiological Psychology: A Treatise of the Activities and Nature of the Mind From the Physical and Experimental Points of View (Thoroughly Revised and Re-Written) I am under particular obligations to Dr. James K. Thacher, Professor of Physiology in the Yale Medical School, for valuable assistance in that description of the Nervous Mechanism, its struct ure and functions, which the First Part of the book contains. If I have escaped the mistake of assuming to teach more than is really known upon this subject, it has been in large measure due to his friendly and skilful guidance. Valuable assistance has also been received from Russell H. Chittenden, Professor of Physiological Chemistry, and Charles S. Hastings, Professor Of Physics - both of the Sheffield Scientific School. The method and arrangement of the book have been chosen so as to fit it for use, both as a text-book by special students Of the subjects Of which it treats, and also by the general reader who is interested in knowing what results have been reached by the more modern - and even the latest - psycho-physical researches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychological Review, Vol. 2 It would hardly be possible for any one man to-day to succeed in understanding all of Helmholtz' investigations equally well. But each will find a peculiar satisfaction in recalling the special impulse which he has experienced in his own department through the inspiration Of Helmholtz. And the representatives of Physiological Psychology should feel themselves impelled to such a retrospect, since it is to that science that Helmholtz dedicated himself at the zenith of his power. The two works which have largely rendered his name illustrious, and from which there has proceeded an incalculable stimulus to other men, belong to our especial province. Without in the least depreciating the thoroughly original and fundamental contributions Of E. H. Weber, Fechner, and Lotze, nevertheless it must be acknowledged that these two works, both on account of the scientific con sequences which have followed them, and of the general and wide-spread knowledge of their contents throughout the scientific world, have more than all others served to bridge the gulf between Physiology and Psychology - a bridge across which thousands of other men now constantly come and go. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Psychology During the last few years 'a wide interest has been aroused in the growth of a science of mental life which employs methods hitherto peculiar to the physical sciences. The interest has been followed by misconceptions of the most varied character. Some have supposed the new science to concern itself with experiments on thought-transference and clairvoyance others have regarded it as a presumptuous sub-depart ment of the physiology of the senses and the brain and still others have treated it as merely a materialistic 'philosophy in one of its aberrations. Amid such confusion it is no wonder that people ask: What is the new psychology? Is it brain physiology, or spiritualism, or a new kind of meta physics? And the chemist, geologist, or physicist is also inclined to ask: Is it a science at all? My aim in this book is to show just what the new psychology is. I have sought to make clear the funda mental ideas of the science, and have not attempted to 'cover the whole field of investigation. Salient points and fundamental methods were chosen rather than a multitude of details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theophrastus and the Greek Physiological Psychology Before Aristotle The Greek text of the De Sensions used and here repro duced is substantially that of Diels in his Doxogmpfzi Graeei, with such changes as he himself has made in those portions of it included in his Fragmente der Vorsokmtiker. Departures from the readings of Diels I have tried faithfully to indicate; but to a very few minor changes in punctua tion I have thought it unnecessary to draw attention. Nor in the translation have I carried through in stubborn consistency my general purpose to indicate by angular brackets, those English expressions that have no cor responding words in the Greek. I have omitted these marks when I felt that the occasion was very slight for troubling in this way the reader's eye.
