Emphasis is placed on the functional characteristics of various organs, and macro- and micro-mechanisms of various fluids. This is presented in the form of recent clinical, experimental and theoretical developments. The outcome of these is of special significance in the design and development of newer cardiovascular technology, and the clinical assessment of disorders and haemorrheology.

Nevertheless, some Classification is necessary to teIl the potential reader whether the book is for him. In this spirit, this book may be said to treat fluid dynamies as a branch of physics, rather than as a branch of applied mathematics or of engineering. I have often heard expressions of the need for such a book, and certainly I have feIt it in my own teaching. I have written it primariIy for students of physics and of physics-based applied science, aIthough I hope others may find it useful. The book differs from existing 'fundamental' books in placing much greater emphasis on what we know through laboratory experiments and their physical interpretation and less on the mathe matieal formalism. It differs from existing 'applied' books in that the choice of topics has been made for the insight they give into the behaviour of fluids in motion rather than for their practical importance. There are differences also from many existing books on fluid dynamics in the branches treated, reflecting to some extent shifts of interest in reeent years. In particular, geophysical and astrophysical applications have prompted important fundamental developments in topics such as conveetion, stratified flow, and the dynamics of rotating fluids. These developments have hitherto been reflected in the contents of textbooks only to a limited extent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this contributed volume showcase current theoretical approaches in the modeling of ocular fluid dynamics in health and disease. By including chapters written by experts from a variety of fields, this volume will help foster a genuinely collaborative spirit between clinical and research scientists. It vividly illustrates the advantages of clinical and experimental methods, data-driven modeling, and physically-based modeling, while also detailing the limitations of each approach. Blood, aqueous humor, vitreous humor, tear film, and cerebrospinal fluid each have a section dedicated to their anatomy and physiology, pathological conditions, imaging techniques, and mathematical modeling. Because each fluid receives a thorough analysis from experts in their respective fields, this volume stands out among the existing ophthalmology literature. Ocular Fluid Dynamics is ideal for current and future graduate students in applied mathematics and ophthalmology who wish to explore the field by investigating open questions, experimental technologies, and mathematical models. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers in mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, chemistry, ophthalmology, and more.

Book excerpt: This is a readable and attractively presented textbook on fluid flow in biological systems that includes flow through blood vessels, pulsatile flow, and pattern formation. It bridges the divide among biomedical engineering students between those with an engineering and those with a bio-scientific background, by offering guidance in both physiological and mathematical aspects of the subject. Every chapter includes surprising, amusing, and stimulating effects that the reader may want to experiment on their own. Brief historical vignettes are also included throughout this book. We in the 21st century can so easily turn to the computer to provide a solution, that we forget the extraordinary sparks of insight that scientists in centuries past had to rely on to provide us with the foundational understanding and analytical tools that we now depend on. This book is an attempt to maintain our roots in past investigations, while giving us wings to explore future ones.

Book excerpt: Process integration has been one of the most active research fields in Biochemical Engineering over the last decade and it will continue to be so if bioprocessing is to become more rational, efficient and productive. This volume outlines what has been achieved in recent years. Written by experts who have made important contributions to the European Science, Foundation Program on Process Integration in Biochemical Engineering, the volume focuses on the progress made and the major opportunities, and in addition on the limitations and the challenges in bioprocess integration that lie ahead. The concept of bioprocess integration is treated at various levels, including integration at the molecular, biological, bioreactor and plant levels, but also accounting for the integration of separation and mass transfer operations and biology, fluid dynamics and physiology, as well as basic science and process technology.

Book excerpt: Part medicine, part biology, and part engineering, biomedicine and bioengineering are by their nature hybrid disciplines. To make these disciplines work, engineers need to speak "medicine," and clinicians and scientists need to speak "engineering." Building a bridge between these two worlds, Biofluid Mechanics: The Human Circulation integrates fluid and solid mechanics relationships and cardiovascular physiology. The book focuses on blood rheology, steady and unsteady flow models in the arterial circulation, and fluid mechanics through native heart valves. The authors delineate the relationship between fluid mechanics and the development of arterial diseases in the coronary, carotid, and ileo-femoral arteries. They go on to elucidate methods used to evaluate the design of circulatory implants such as artificial heart valves, stents, and vascular grafts. The book covers design requirements for the development of an ideal artificial valve, including a discussion of the currently available mechanical and bioprosthetic valves. It concludes with a detailed description of common fluid mechanical measurements used for diagnosing arterial and valvular diseases as well as research studies that examine the possible interactions between hemodynamics and arterial disease. Drawing on a wide range of material, the authors cover both theory and practical applications. The book breaks down fluid mechanics into key definitions and specific properties and then uses these pieces to construct a solid foundation for analyzing biofluid mechanics in both normal and diseased conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular Fluid Dynamics, Volume 1 explores some problems and concepts of mammalian cardiovascular function, with emphasis on experimental studies and methods. It considers pressure measurement in experimental physiology, including the measurements of pulsatile flow, flow velocity, lengths, and dimensions; the use of control theory and systems analysis in cardiovascular dynamics; the application of computer models in cardiovascular research; the meaning and measurement of myocardial contractility; and the consequences of the steady-state analysis of arterial function. Organized into 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the mammalian cardiovascular system and the essential features of cardiovascular function. It then discusses the practical problems associated with the use of pressure transducers in physiological and cardiac laboratories, the challenges involved in pulsatile flow measurement using flowmeters and thermal devices, and the mechanical analysis of the circulatory system. It explains some computer modeling techniques used in investigating the hemodynamics of the cardiovascular system, including the heart and heart muscle; basic concepts of muscle mechanics and the mechanical properties of cardiac muscle; the fluid mechanics of heart valves; and the pressure and flow in large arteries. The book concludes with a chapter on vascular resistance and vascular input impedance. This book is intended for biologists, physical scientists, and others interested in cardiovascular physiology.
