Book excerpt: Meet the learning needs of today’s students with a brand-new style of textbook—designed to excite your students’ interest in clinical chemistry! Organized almost entirely around organ systems—to parallel the way physicians order tests—this groundbreaking text teaches the concepts and principles of clinical chemistry through realistic situations and scenarios. By integrating pathophysiology, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry for each major system, students clearly see the relevance of what they are learning to their future careers. This practical approach encourages them how to apply theoretical principles in the laboratory and to develop important critical-thinking skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin and early years of any rapidly changing scientific discipline runs the risk of being forgotten unless a record of its past is preserved. In this, the first book-length history of clinical chemistry, those involved or interested in the field will read about who and what went before them and how the profession came to its present state of clinical importance. The narrative reconstructs the origins of clinical chemistry in the seventeenth century and traces its often obscure path of development in the shadow of organic chemistry, physiology and biochemistry until it assumes its own identity at the beginning of the twentieth century. The chronological development of the story reveals the varied roots from which modern clinical chemistry arose.

It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry That there is considerable difference of opinion among teachers of chemistry as to what portions of the science can, with most profit, be presented to the medical student, is evidenced by the number and variety of small laboratory manuals for the use of medical students that have appeared within the past few years. Some of these books deal largely with the detection of poisons, a subject that in actual practice is always entrusted to the professional chemist. Others devote a great deal of attention to training the student in analytical methods, to sanitary analysis, or to the examination of foods or drugs. Another class devote most attention to the chemistry of the tissues and secretions and proximate principles of the human body. All of them, however, recognize the importance of the gross analysis of urine, many however, treating the subject from the purely chemical side. While it will be admitted that all these subjects are important for medical students to know, it must also be admitted that the time usually given to the subject of chemistry is too limited for such an extensive course. A medical college is a technical school for the training of young men or women in the science of the prevention or the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The chemical teaching should, therefore, be directed to this purpose, and should consist in teaching the fundamental principles and the application of these principles to the science of medicine, especially to the diagnosis and treatment of diseased conditions. Such applications of the science of chemistry can rightfully be grouped under the head of clinical chemistry. This little manual, the second edition of which is now presented, is the outcome of this idea gradually developed during the past twenty years of teaching in the Long Island College Hospital. In preparing this edition the author has thoroughly revised the book, added much new matter including many new processes, some of which are original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology TO offer to the medical profession in general and to the medical student in particular a new work embodying laboratory methods of clinical chemistry and toxicology, where so many admirable treatises are in existence, may appear at first sight an unprofitable and useless labor. But all such previous works have either been too voluminous for general use, or too complicated to serve as an ordinary working manual. What the student needs is a work brief enough to give him a clear understanding of the methods of chemical diagnosis, and broad enough so that its pages may comprise all that he will need in the intelligent practice of his profession. While this little work does not pretend to be a com plete working manual of medical chemistry and toxicology, if it accomplishes the purpose for which it was written, that of leading the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical Chemistry considers what happens to the body’s chemistry when affected by disease. It provides introductory coverage of the scientific basis for biochemistry tests routinely used in medicine - including tests for the assessment of organ function, diagnosis and monitoring disease activity and therapy efficacy. Each topic area begins with a concise description of the underlying physiological and biochemical principles and then applies them to patient investigation and management. The regular use of case histories helps further emphasise clinical relevance and chapter key points, as well as provide a useful starting point for examination revision. The clear and engaging writing style appreciated by generations of readers has been retained in this ninth edition, while the content has been thoroughly updated throughout. The approach and scope of this trusted text makes it ideal for integrated medical curricula, for medical training and for students and practitioners of clinical and biomedical science. The complementary eBook version, including additional cases and self-assessment material, completes this superb learning package. Updated to incorporate the latest changes in practice – including new tests and the most recent evidence-based guidance – plus a new chapter on clinical chemistry in pediatrics. Figures, tables, boxes, and case studies aid understanding and learning. ‘Light bulb’ sections give practical advice and clarify difficult concepts or potential pitfalls. New ‘Red flag’ boxes highlight the results which should cause immediate concern to clinicians. Updated references to core guidelines reflect latest best practice.
