Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five experienced hazardous material (HAZMAT) fire fighters participated in three cities to evaluate three HAZMAT protective ensembles. The climatic conditions for these field studies were hot/dry (above 40°C), hot/wet (above 32°C) and comfortable (18 to 27°C). Each fire fighter served as his own control and wore a specific HAZMAT protective ensemble once a day for three days. Each test involved an operationally relevant 45-min work session during a total test duration of 55 min. Rectal temperatures (TR), heart rates (HR), blood pressures, respiration rates, clothed weights, and climatic parameters were recorded before and after each test. Test results show TR, HR, and sweat losses increased to 39°C, 208 beats/min, and 2.4 kg, respectively, during the hot/dry, hot/wet exposures. The wet bulb globe temperature levels for the hot/dry conditions exceed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommended limiting criteria and were marginal for the hot/wet tests. Physiologic parameters measured during comfortable conditions were lower than those measured during the hot/dry or hot/wet conditions. Differences in suit design were clearly reflected in the measured physiologic parameters and the effort required to perform work. Suggested suit modifications are discussed to reduce clothing encumberance and enhance work efficiency.

Book excerpt: Experienced fire fighters with Hazardous Materials training participated in field tests using procedures described in ASTM F-1154 to evaluate the fit and function of fully encapsulated and disposal type chemical protective ensembles. These evaluations were performed outside under various climatic conditions at the Sacramento, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Prince George's County, VA; and, Del Ray Beach, FL Fire Departments. Initial trials at the first test site in Sacramento showed that tasks described in either Procedure A and B of the ASTM standard were not rigorous enough by themselves to evaluate these ensembles. So all the tasks (16) were combined and used to assess the physiologic responses of the fire fighters. Based on these findings, a different suit integrity test was formulated and the disposable type chemical protective clothing was evaluated under field test conditions. This evaluation quickly identified several weak areas in the suits' construction and is reported in this study.

Book excerpt: Wearing impermeable garments for hazardous materials clean up can often present a health and safety problem for the wearer. Even short duration clean up activities can produce heat stress injuries in hazardous materials workers. It was hypothesized that an internal cooling system might increase worker productivity and decrease likelihood of heat stress injuries in typical HazMat operations. Two HazMat protective ensembles were compared during treadmill exercise. The different ensembles were created using two different suits: a Trelleborg VPS suit representative of current HazMat suits and a prototype suit developed by NASA engineers. The two life support systems used were a current technology Interspiro Spirolite breathing apparatus and a liquid air breathing system that also provided convective cooling. Twelve local members of a HazMat team served as test subjects. They were fully instrumented to allow a complete physiological comparison of their thermal responses to the different ensembles. Results showed that cooling from the liquid air system significantly decreased thermal stress. The results of the subjective evaluations of new design features in the prototype suit were also highly favorable. Incorporation of these new design features could lead to significant operational advantages in the future.
