Book excerpt: The research in Physics Education has to do with the search of solutions to the complex problem of how to improve the learning and teaching of physics. The complexity of the problem lies in the different fields of knowledge that need to be considered in the research. In fact, besides the disciplinary knowledge in physics (which must be considered from the conceptual, the historical, and the epistemological framework), one has to take into account some basic knowledge in the context of psychology and the cognitive sciences (for the general and contextual aspects of learning) and some basic knowledge in education and comunication (for what concerns teaching skills and strategies). Looking back at the historical development of the research one may recognize that the complexity of the endeavour was not clear at first but became clear in its development, which shifted the focus of the research in the course of time from physics to learning to teaching. We may say that the research started, more than 30 years ago, with a focus on disciplinary knowledge. Physicists in different parts of the western world, after research work in some field of physics, decided to concentrate on the didactical comunication of physical knowledge.

Up to now no broad and well balanced documentation of German physics during this time has been available in English, despite the significant role physics has played both politically (e. g. , in weaponry planning) and ideologically (e. g. , in the controversy over the value of theoretical ('Jewish') vs. experimental ('Aryan') physics), and even though prominent figures like the scientist-philosopher and emigre Albert Einstein and the controversial nuclear physicist Werner Heisenberg have become household names. The conference was attended by SO participants from 15 nations. These proceedings document the program and the talks at the conference. This conference was preceded by a two-week summer school. Ten lecturers gave extended lectures on related topics. The proceedings of the school will also be published in the NATO-AS[ volume by Plenum. This volume is a collection of 13 papers in English and German on the abovementioned subjects. The book describes some characteristics of the different families of narrow bandgap semiconductors; the result arising from the interaction between free carriers and acoustic waves in solids; and the advances made in the field of modulation spectroscopy. The text further discusses the relations between the state of the photoemitted electrons and the absorption process in the solid. In Chapter 8, applications to various problems in semiconductor physics are dealt with. The Empirical Pseudopotential Method and the theory of phonon dispersion curves from a pseudopotential point of view are also considered. Further examined is the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity in relation to the probability distribution of the electric field strength of laser light that has a form completely analogous to that of the pair wave function of the theory. The implications of the thermodynamics of point defects in imperfect crystals and the association of foreign ions and vacancies due to their Coulomb interaction, resulting in complexes, are investigated.
