Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is evidence from the D(.gamma., p)n reaction that the meson-exchange model is failing in the GeV region. Surprisingly, it appears that the new (D.gamma., p)n data favor the energy dependence of the nuclear chromodynamics model rather that of the meson-exchange model. Application of the polarization method to electron scattering studies is in its infancy, and it is potentially a very powerful technique. The internal target method coupled with laser-driven polarized targets should represent an important tool for nuclear physics.

This book was released on 1999-07-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Workshop on Electronuclear Physics with Internal Targets and the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST) took place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in May 1998. A total of 75 physicists from 26 institutions located in seven countries participated in a lively meeting focused on the unique and important advantages of polarized gas targets internal to an electron storage ring in the study of hadron structure. This meeting has reaffirmed the contributions that BLAST will make in the area of few-body physics. The BLAST detector is designed to measure the spin-dependent electromagnetic response of light nuclei in the momentum transfer range up to 0.8 (GeV/c)2. It will use the 1 GeV longitudinally polarized beam of the Bates South Hall Ring and polarized internal targets. BLAST is scheduled to be completed in 2001.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of the "International Conference on Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes" are presented in this volume. This conference was held in Telluride, Colorado, March 14-17, 1988, and was the fourth in the Telluride series of nuclear physics conferences. A continuing theme in the Telluride conference series has been the complementarity of various intermediate-energy projectiles for elucidating the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear structure. Earlier conferences have contributed significantly to an understanding of spin currents in nuclei, in particular the distribution of Gamow-Teller strength using charge-exchange reactions. The previous conference on "Antinucleon and Nucleon Nucleus Interactions" compared nuclear information from tra tional probes to recent results from antinucleon reactions. The 1988 conference on Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes, put special emphasis on spin observables and brought together experts using spin information to probe nuclear structure. Spin observables have provided very detailed information about nuclear structure and reactions. Since the 1985 Telluride conference we have seen data from new focal plane polarimeters at LAMPF, TRIUMF, IUCF and elsewhere. In addition, spin observables provide an important common ground between electron and hadron scattering physics. In the future we look forward to new facilities such as NTOF for polarized neutron measurements at Los Alamos and a vigorous spin program at CEBAF.

Download or read book High Energy Spin Physics written by Karl-Heinz Althoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics, held in Bonn, 6-15 September 1990, attracted 280 participants from 16 countries. This meet ing covered not only fundamental experimental and theoretical spin phenomena but also technological developments in polarized beams and targets. For the first time intermediate energy spin physics with electron machines was discussed extensively. Highlights included the work on polarized high energy electron beams at LEP and TRISTAN and the failure of the standard model in connection with spin phenomena, in particular the growth of the spin asymmetry in violent proton-proton scattering. Also the presentation of different models in con nection with the still-unsolved 'proton spin crisis' and the proposals for four different experiments to determine the spin structure functions caused lively and sometimes controversial discussions. The Organizing Committee would like to thank all speakers for their excel lent talks, the conveners for the organization of the parallel sessions, and the International Advisory Committee for their advice. Four workshops preceded the symposium. 160 participants, among them many young physicists, discussed mainly technological spin problems. These papers are published in separate proceedings. We gratefully acknowledge the enthusiastic help of the members of our institute in preparing and running the conference and the workshops, especially Mrs. D. FaSbender, Mrs. E. Wendorf, Mrs. J. Wetzel, and Dr. U.Idschok.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Physics at KAON", an international meeting jointly organized by the KFA Jillich and TRI UMF, was held in the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef from June 7 through June 9, 1989. This was one of a series of meetings - the first one in Europe - in which plans for the medium energy physics laboratory KAON were presented and some aspects of the physics at this new facility were discussed. The meeting focussed mainly on the topics of hadron spectroscopy, J{ -meson scattering, strangeness in nuclei, and rare decays. Also presented were some of the research programs at SATURNE and COSY which may well lead to KAON physics in the future. These proceed ings include articles which summarize our current experimental and theoretical knowledge in the various areas, as well as papers which describe lines of research feasible with KAON. The large number of participants - limited, in fact, by the capacity of the Physikzentrum - clearly demonstrates the great interest of the European physics community in the research avenues which will be opened by the high-intensity hadron facilities. Book Synopsis Perspectives in Hadronic Physics by : Sigfrido Boffi
Download or read book Perspectives in Hadronic Physics written by Sigfrido Boffi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited and contributed papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Perspectives in Hadronic Physics and sent to the Editors within the deadline. The Conference was held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, from May 12th to 16th, 2003, and was attended by about 100 scientists from 20 countries. The series ofConferences on Perspectives on Hadronic Physics takes place every two years since 1997 and follows the seven Workshops on Perspectives in Nuclear Physics at Intermediate Energies, organized every two years at ICTP since 1983. The aim of these Conferences is to discuss the status-of-the-art concerning the experimental and theoretical investigations of hadronic systems, from nucleons to nuclei and dense nuclear matter, in terms of the relevant underlying degrees of freedom. For such a reason the Fourth Conference has been focused on those experimental and theoretical topics which have been in the last few years the object of intensive investigations, viz. the various approaches employed to describe the structure of hadrons in terms of QCD and QCD inspired models, the recent developments in the treatment of the properties and propagations of hadronic states in the medium, the relevant progress done in the solution of the few- and many- hadron problems, the recent results in the experimental investigation of dense hadronic matter and, last but not least, the physics programs of existing Laboratories and the suggested projects for new Facilities.
