Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Physics for College Students: A Textbook for Undergraduates and a Lecture Course and Reference Work for Teachers and Other Students of Physics IN this revised edition, the author has corrected typo graphical errors and made changes which no doubt will enhance the value of the book. The original purpose has been to present the principles of physics in a reasonably complete form, so selected as to round out the information of a well-educated man who is not aiming to qualify as an engineer or technical expert, but who nevertheless desires to be well informed in this branch of science. Especially has the author endeavored to make the sub ject of human as well as of technical interest to the student. It is hoped that this may help to make the book attractive to some who may feel that their knowledge of the subject is be coming impaired, as well as to those who are first acquiring their knowledge of it. In presenting a subject so broad and so varied as physics, no matter what material is selected there will always arise the question whether certain things that are omitted would not better have been included and others that are included might not better have been omitted. No choice can be made that will meet with universal approval. Quite as important, it seems to the author, is it to present any topic in a way that will give the student a proper conception of it and of its relation to the rest of the science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Physics In offering this work to my fellow teachers, a word of explana tion is due. The book was undertaken some years ago when the writer felt the want of a text-book adapted to the needs of students taking the general first year course in college. As the work has slowly progressed several text-books of very similar aim have appeared, and it must be admitted that the call is not so impera tive now as formerly; and yet it is hoped that the treatment here presented may meet some still existing demand and so justify its existence. What may be called the physical rather than the mathematical method has been preferred in giving definitions and explana tions, because it is believed that the ideas presented are more easily grasped and more tenaciously held when the mind forms for itself a sort of picture of the conditions, instead of merely associating them with the symbols of a formula. There are many minds that do not easily grasp mathematical reasoning even of a simple sort; and it is often the case also that a student who may be able to follow an algebraic deduction step by step has very little idea of the significance of the whole when he reaches the end. Algebra is not his native tongue and it takes considerable time and experience for him to learn to think in it. And while all will agree that for the more advanced study of physics, mathematics is quite indispensable, many will grant that in a general course, which is to furnish to most of those taking it all that they will ever know of physics as a science, the ideas and reasonings should be presented as directly as possible and in the most simple and familiar terms. This then has been the central aim in the preparation of this book; to give the student clear and distinct conceptions Of the various ideas and phenomena of physics, and to aid him in think ing through the relations between them, to the end that he may see something of the underlying unity of the subject; and to carry out this aim in such a manner that students may not be repelled by any unnecessary prominence of symbolic methods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Physics In pursuance of the first of these purposes, that arrangement of topics has been chosen which, in the experience of the authors, has been found to lend itself most readily to a simple and natural presentation of the subject as a whole. Owing to the more obvious relations existing between them, the sub jcet of heat is made to follow immediately after the distinctly material phenomena of mechanics and sound; electricity pre cedes light, and the subject of radiation, usually found under the different chapters of heat, electricity and light, is treated separately after these subjects have been presented. It has also been thought best, even at the sacrifice of historical consist ency, to begin the subject of electricity with current electricity, in order to secure the advantage of the greater familiarity of the student with the phenomena of applied electricity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of General Physics for College Students: Electricity, Electromagnetic Waves, and Sound Several aims have been kept in mind in the preparation of the following text: (1) To make the descriptions, proofs, state ments, and illustrations clear to the average student. (2) To emphasize the physical side of physics, point out its applications in the commercial world, and give more than an outline in the development of a topic. (3) To incorporate in the body of the discussions and in their proper place the electronic and electro magnetic theories now so well established. The discussion of electricity begins with the experimental evidence which led to a belief in the electron, and the ordinary phenomena of electricity are explained in accordance with this theory. Magnetism comes early in the discussion and emphasis is placed on the fact that a magnetic field is the result of an electric charge in motion. The explanation of electrolysis is given in accordance with modern theories, and an unusual amount of space has been given to the very important subject of electromagnetic induction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Physics This book is the result of an experience of nearly ten years in teaching Experimental Physics to classes consist ing of students who were preparing for college and of students who were not preparing for college. Most of the experiments are quantitative, some are qualitative. Qualitative experiments serve to stimulate the interest of the student, and to prepare his mind for a better understanding of quantitative experiments. A beginner in Physics should know something about that which he'is expected to measure before he attempts to measure it. This knowledge is readily acquired from qualitative experiments. It is not intended to be a course in Experimental Physics, but, as its title implies, an annotated list of some three hundred experiments, any one of which might be profitably performed by a sophomore student in college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physics for Grammar Schools This book is the result of several years' use of'the experimental method in teaching physics to boys under thirteen years of age. It considers subjects which are full of interest, and it compels the student to do work, to observe carefully, and to write an accurate account of his observations. In the case of every student it is found to awaken dormant energy and to arouse enthusiasm. After a lapse of three or four years, when the student begins the more earnest work of preparing for college science examinations, he finds himself acquainted with many fundamental facts and ready to advance rapidly. The book, although preliminary, follows the method indicated in the requirements for admission to Harvard and Columbia Universities, and contains only such experiments as have been found by the writer to be serviceable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Physics and Its Application to Industry and Everyday Life The present book is designed for that 'large class of students who in the early part of their college career require a coordinated elementary course in the fundamental principles, the methods; and the industrial applications of physics. The purpose is not only to impart information, but also to give training in the methods by which facts are correlated in laws, and these laws applied to the affairs of life. In order that the mind of the student may not be distracted from the physics by difficulties foreign to the subject, hypotheses still in controversy are not considered, and no mathematics is assumed beyond the elements of algebra and trigonometry. New ideas are first developed and then expressed by definitions or laws in physical terms. Definitions are carefully distinguished from defining equations. In making the questions at the end of the various sections, the object has been to develop in the student the power of connecting facts and laws with familiar phenomena rather than the ability to enunciate the various definitions, laws, and equations given in the text. It is hoped that from the study of the numerous solved problems the student will early acquire an ability ln effective attack as well as in the orderly presentation of work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physics, Largely Experimental: On the Basis of the Harvard College "Descriptive List of Elementary Physical Experiments" IN the year 1886 Harvard College made a very impor tant change touching the physics in its requirements for admission. For many years candidates for the Fresh man class had been examined in physics, but in text-book physics only. It was now decided to establish a require ment of laboratory work to be recommended by the College in place of the text-book work, although the latter, con siderably increased, remained as an alternative for those who could not command laboratory facilities.
