Book excerpt: Physics considerations for a next-generation linear collider based on laser-plasma accelerators are discussed. The ultra-high accelerating gradient of a laser-plasma accelerator and short laser coupling distance between accelerator stages allows for a compact linac. Two regimes of laser-plasma acceleration are discussed. The highly nonlinear regime has the advantages of higher accelerating fields and uniform focusing forces, whereas the quasi-linear regime has the advantage of symmetric accelerating properties for electrons and positrons. Scaling of various accelerator and collider parameters with respect to plasma density and laser wavelength are derived. Reduction of beamstrahlung effects implies the use of ultra-short bunches of moderate charge. The total linac length scales inversely with the square root of the plasma density, whereas the total power scales proportional to the square root of the density. A 1 TeV center-of-mass collider based on stages using a plasma density of 1017 cm−3 requires tens of J of laser energy per stage (using 1 [mu]m wavelength lasers) with tens of kHz repetition rate. Coulomb scattering and synchrotron radiation are examined and found not to significantly degrade beam quality. A photon collider based on laser-plasma accelerated beams is also considered. The requirements for the scattering laser energy are comparable to those of a single laser-plasma accelerator stage.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multistage laser-plasma accelerator (LPA) driven by two mixing electromagnetic hybrid modes of a gas-filled capillary waveguide is presented. Plasma wakefields generated by a laser pulse comprising two mixing modes coupled to a metallic or dielectric capillary filled with gas provide us with an efficient accelerating structure of electrons in a substantially long distance beyond a dephasing length under the matching between a capillary radius and plasma density. For a seamless multistage structure of the capillary waveguide, the numerical model of the transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics of an electron bunch considering the radiation reaction and multiple Coulomb scattering effects reveals a converging behavior of the bunch radius and normalized emittance down to ,ào1¬†nm level when the beam is accelerated up to 560¬†GeV in a 67¬†m length. This capability allows us to conceive a compact electron-positron linear collider providing with high luminosity of 1034¬†cm,àí2¬†s,àí1 at 1 TeV center-of-mass (CM) energy.

Book Synopsis Luminosity Limitations of Linear Colliders Based on Plasma Acceleration by :
Download or read book Luminosity Limitations of Linear Colliders Based on Plasma Acceleration written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle acceleration in plasma creates a possibility of exceptionally high accelerating gradients and appears as a very attractive option for future linear electron-positron and/or photon-photon colliders. These high accelerating gradients were already demonstrated in a number of experiments. Furthermore, a linear collider requires exceptionally high beam brightness which still needs to be demonstrated. In this article we discuss major phenomena which limit the beam brightness of accelerated beam and, consequently, the collider luminosity.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Staged Laser-Plasma Acceleration by : Satomi Shiraishi
Download or read book Investigation of Staged Laser-Plasma Acceleration written by Satomi Shiraishi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis establishes an exciting new beginning for Laser Plasma Accelerators (LPAs) to further develop toward the next generation of compact high energy accelerators. Design, installation and commissioning of a new experimental setup at LBNL played an important role and are detailed through three critical components: e-beam production, reflection of laser pulses with a plasma mirror and large wake excitation below electron injection threshold. Pulses from a 40 TW peak power laser system were split into a 25 TW pulse and a 15 TW pulse. The first pulse was used for e-beam production in the first module and the second pulse was used for wake excitation in the second module to post-accelerate the e-beam. As a result, reliable e-beam production and efficient wake excitation necessary for the staged acceleration were independently demonstrated. These experiments have laid the foundation for future staging experiments at the 40 TW peak power level.

Book Synopsis Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena by : Helmut J. Schwarz
Download or read book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena written by Helmut J. Schwarz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the third Workshop on "Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena" in 1973, one area within the scope of this con ference received increased attention: laser fusion. This possi bility was emphasized in February 1977 in a Seminar on US energy policies at The Hartford Graduate Center by John F. O'Leary, Head of the Federal Energy Administration, who said that "by the year 2100, ••• laser fusion will be coming along, giving us a new age of choice". Efforts in research and development were stepped up to investigate new concepts of laser ignition of controlled nuclear reactions. Here, one expects no radioactive waste from fuel. The deuterium-tritium reaction - the only one which may be possible with magnetic field confinement in tokamaks - has a highly radio active tritium ~ycle, while, in principle, laser reactions are possible with pure deuterium, hydrogen-boron or others. The worldwide progress in laser compression was not only stim ulated by the energy crisis, but also by its advancements. In our first Workshop in 1969 F. F10ux of the French Limei1 Laboratories described his experiments, which led, only one month later, to the production of fusion neutrons in such large numbers as had not been achieved up to then (see appendix of Vol. I these Proceedings).
