Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Training Treated From American and European Points of View The Sun has done me the compliment to ask for some account of my journeying and studies during my stay in Europe, from the middle of May, 1888, until the end of August, 1889. But it seems to me that I can better serve the cause of physical training, in which the public is beginning to take a livelier and more intelligent interest than hitherto, by foregoing any attempt to give an itinerary or description of my travels and observations, however interesting and instructive they were to myself, and by attempting to set forth, in as impersonal a way as possible, some of the conclusions at which I have arrived as the result of my personal study of gymnasia, play-grounds, public and military schools, and orthopaedic institutes in America, as well as in England, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and Sweden, and to note some of the problems with regard to physical training which are occupying or seem likely soon to occupy the attention of educators in Baltimore, as well as in other parts of the country. As I shall not cumber what I have to say with references to authorities, or with my reasons for what may appear to be unsupported and arbitrary opinions, it seems proper for me to state that, before I was enabled to devote some months to the study of athletics and gymnastics in England d(iermanv. in i8Sr, I had had occasion to visit all the P.E. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Physical Training The exercises contained in this book form the basis upon which the entire system of physical training in the United States Army is founded - the system that was employed in the physical training of the vast army of over two mil lion men who went to France in 1918 and fought the Nation's battles. You saw those men return to their homes during the Spring and Summer of 1919. You saw their fine physical condition. You noted the wonderful improvement that had been made in the men of your immediate acquaintance who were in the service. The basis of all of this was the system of physical exercise that was employed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. My own actual need of such a work has been most clearly shown in my capacity of Lecturer in Physical Training in the Faculty of Education, Uni versity of Toronto. Almost daily I have been asked to recommend some work which would enable these embryo school teachers to learn something of their bodies, and the effect of exercise thereon. As these teachers are no further enlightened in the subject of physical training than the general public, it is not necessary to write anything but 'a simple, concise work on the subject. By dividing same into five parts, one is enabled to secure what is wanted without wading through unnecessary reading. Yes; you can all become strong if you have the will and use it in the right direction. But, in the first place, you must learn to exercise your mind. This first of all lessons in physical training is of the utmost importance. For on it the whole of my system depends. If physical exercise alone and unaided could achieve the desired end, then would every one who, like the breaker of stones, has to use his muscles to earn his daily bread, become, in a popular acceptation of the term, a strong 1 man. The breaker of stones, however, never usemhis' mind. He has to get through a given amount of work, and his method is purely mechanical. Though he may use his muscles in hard work every day of the year it is unlikely that his strength will ever materially increase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise It must not be thought, however, that this book deals wholly with heavy gymnastics, weight-lifting, and feats of strength. Many light exercises are given as being valuable to promote elasticity and suppleness; and, in addi tion to these, - as an apprenticeship of mode rate exercises is absolutely necessary in order that one may become capable of the simplest exhibition of force, - many intermediate exer cises are carefully described, and their effects discussed. The effects of common indoor and outdoor athletic sports and exercises are gone into. All which, it is hoped, will make this volume a complete manual of physical culture, suitable alike for those boys and girls, men and women, who may wish, without the aid of a teacher, to make the best of their bodies. Are an epitome of all psychological physical culture, and, thoroughly carried out in daily life, will transform that life into a healthy and happy one. This system will be found to be progressive, going from the simple to the complex. It is a complete gymnastic system along aesthetic lines and has been elaborated by the author after many years' experience as teacher and director of physical training in the best schools of New York, com bined with a critical study of the carved works of ancient art. Bas-relief, alto-relief and the free figure, in vase, frieze, pillar, and temple, have been the models for much of the work. This, blended with a knowledge of medical gymnastics, makes the author bold enough to think that she is offering something of real value to the teacher and the pupil of physical culture. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Physical Training The first edition of pioneers OF modern physical training was merely a reprint in book form of a series of biographical Sketches which appeared in Phy sical Training from month to month between January of 1909 and June of 1910. They were begun with no thought of completeness, and with the idea of furnishing a full - page portrait faced by a page of text. After two instalments had been prepared it was decided to lengthen the remaining articles in order to allow a more adequate treatment. Certain persons whom I desired very much to include in the list were omitted at the time owing to lack of available portraits or the necessary biographi cal data, or because the historical background involved had not yet been sufficiently studied. None of these reasons exists any longer, and I have therefore added the names of Amoros, H jalinar Ling, Brosius, and Betz. Other Sketches have been expanded to make the significance of the subject more apparent and to secure a better balance of parts. The Introduction and Ap pendix are taken from an article published in Physical Training for January and February of 1912 and in the American Physical Education Review for March and April of the same year. It is hoped that in its present form the book may serve as an introduction to the his tory of physical education, and commend itself to teach ers of that subject who desire a manual for use in nor mal schools, leaders' classes, and summer schools.
