Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Optics: Or the Nature and Properties of Light, a Descriptive and Experiment Treatise The author, on commencing an experimental study of Physical Optics more than a quarter of a century ago, found a want of experimental guidance in the treatises upon the subject, and this want has not yet been supplied. It is true that experimental results have been described, but not with the experimental detail which the student needs, in order to abridge his labour and facilitate his progress. Like other physical sciences, its development rests almost entirely upon the application of mathematical analysis, and accordingly the discussions of the original investigators are frequently too mathematical for general readers. Though the author, from the commencement of his experiments, had an adequate store of mathematical knowledge for application to his own researches, and to follow the researches of others, yet he has continually seen that the introduction of mathematical formulae into treatises upon Physical Optics must restrict the study of the science to a smaller class than was desirable; for many of the most expert experimenters have only slender acquirements in mathematical analysis. It has been the author's object to supply the want of a descriptive, experimental, and popular treatise on Physical Optics, and to point out the bearing of the different results upon the nature and properties of Light. Book Synopsis The Optics of Life by : Sonke Johnsen
Download or read book The Optics of Life written by Sonke Johnsen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optics--a field of physics focusing on the study of light--is also central to many areas of biology, including vision, ecology, botany, animal behavior, neurobiology, and molecular biology. The Optics of Life introduces the fundamentals of optics to biologists and nonphysicists, giving them the tools they need to successfully incorporate optical measurements and principles into their research. Sönke Johnsen starts with the basics, describing the properties of light and the units and geometry of measurement. He then explores how light is created and propagates and how it interacts with matter, covering topics such as absorption, scattering, fluorescence, and polarization. Johnsen also provides a tutorial on how to measure light as well as an informative discussion of quantum mechanics. The Optics of Life features a host of examples drawn from nature and everyday life, and several appendixes that offer further practical guidance for researchers. This concise book uses a minimum of equations and jargon, explaining the basic physics of light in a succinct and lively manner. It is the essential primer for working biologists and for anyone seeking an accessible introduction to optics. Some images inside the book are unavailable due to digital copyright restrictions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the unresolved debate between Newton and Huygens from 300 years ago, The Nature of Light: What is a Photon? discusses the reality behind enigmatic photons. It explores the fundamental issues pertaining to light that still exist today. Gathering contributions from globally recognized specialists in electrodynamics and quantum optics, the book begins by clearly presenting the mainstream view of the nature of light and photons. It then provides a new and challenging scientific epistemology that explains how to overcome the prevailing paradoxes and confusions arising from the accepted definition of a photon as a monochromatic Fourier mode of the vacuum. The book concludes with an array of experiments that demonstrate the innovative thinking needed to examine the wave-particle duality of photons. Looking at photons from both mainstream and out-of-box viewpoints, this volume is sure to inspire the next generation of quantum optics scientists and engineers to go beyond the Copenhagen interpretation and formulate new conceptual ideas about light–matter interactions and substantiate them through inventive applications.
