Download or read book Development of an Analytical Model of the Hydrodynamic Added Mass of a Ship Ramming Ice, Vol. II written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study developed a calibrated analytical model for the evaluation of the added mass of a ship ramming ice to provide a better understanding of the ship/ice interaction process. The work entailed the use of analytical modelling, full scale data analysis, model testing and finite element modelling to determine the added mass. The analytical modelling task involved a literature review and the development of a preliminary model for calculating the surge, heave and a pitch added mass coefficient as well as studying the effects of bottom proximity and ice proximity. A comprehensive model testing program of an MV ARCTIC 1:50 model and a Kigoriak 1:22.5 model were carried out and extensive data collected covering free oscillations, impulsive loading, and ramming scenario. Finally, a comprehensive 3-dimensional finite element model was developed using the computer program SESAM, a beam representation of the hull girder stiffness, the geometry of the hull surface, and fluid modelling.

Book excerpt: Description of a project to improve present knowledge of the accuracy of physical model results for ice ridges and the preferred techniques for the production of ice ridges in the model basin. A small number of field ridge ramming tests that were well documented were simulated at 1:9.1 model scale. This report reviews the available full scale data and the selection of field ridge ramming events for modelling; describes preliminary ridge modelling tests at Fleet Technology Ltd.'s ice tank in Kanata and development of a test plan; and describes detailed ridge modelling tests at the Institute for Marine Dynamics in St. John's, Newfoundland. Tests conducted in 1982 in the Bering Sea with the USCGC Polar Star were selected as the reference field event for the study. Parameters varied during the tests included the ice-model friction factor, the speed of the model, and the size, consolidation depth and strength of the model ridges.

Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation for Dynamic Positioning in Pack Ice by : Jie Dai
Download or read book Numerical Simulation for Dynamic Positioning in Pack Ice written by Jie Dai and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the numerical modelling of Dynamic Position (DP) in pack ice. A two-dimensional numerical model for ship-ice interaction was developed using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). A viscous-elastic ice rheology was adopted to model the dynamic behaviour of the ice floes. Both the ship-ice and the ice-ice contacts were considered in the interaction force. The environment forces and the hydrodynamic forces were calculated by empirical formulas. After the current position and external forces were calculated, a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control and thrust allocation algorithms were applied on the vessel to control its motion and heading. The numerical model was coded in Fortran 90 and validated by comparing computation results to published data. Validation work was first carried out for the ship-ice interaction calculation, and former researchers' simulation and model test results were used for the comparison. With confidence in the interaction model, case studies were conducted to predict the DP capability of a sample Arctic DP vessel.
