Book excerpt: "According to the most recent definition, SHAPE America (n.d.) states, “Physical literacy is the ability, confidence, and desire to be physically active for life” (Next steps section). Physical Education (PE) is described as an academic subject with a standards-based curriculum “designed to develop motor skills, knowledge and behaviors for active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy and emotional intelligence” (SHAPE America, n.d., para.1). Whitehead (2013) confirms that PE is the curriculum and the goal in PE should be to reach physical literacy (PL). With the end goal of PL in mind, physical educators should be able to create meaningful and relevant lessons to help children and adolescents reach PL. However, when physical educators have low personal levels of PL or lack of knowledge of PL, they could face challenges in helping students reach this goal. According to Tristani (2014), new PE professionals had a poor understanding of the significance of PL. The significance of PL is that when a student can move with confidence and competence it will ultimately encourage them to be physically active for life (Grey Bruce Health Unit, 2016). Unfortunately, poor understanding of the significance of PL contributed to the lack of clarity of the concept of PL and its relation to PE curricula. Whitehead (2013) stated that there is some confusion amongst PE professionals regarding the relationship between PE and PL. The confusion stems from PL being an alternative to PE even though one is a curriculum (the how) and the other is a lifelong goal (the outcome). The purpose of this study was to examine perceived PL levels and knowledge of PL among first and last year teacher candidates in one university PETE program."--
