Book Synopsis Physical Factors Influencing Resistance of Concrete to Deicing Agents by : W. R. Malisch
Download or read book Physical Factors Influencing Resistance of Concrete to Deicing Agents written by W. R. Malisch and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were made of the effects of varying concrete production methods upon potentially durable concrete. Variations in the surface porosity, strength and air void system produced by differing finishing techniques were evaluated for typical air-entrained concretes. Large and small scale specimens were cast and effects of period and time of finishing, environmental conditions, and additions of water during finishing were evaluated using surface scaling tests, surface tensile strength tests and microscopical determination of surface air void parameters. If a concrete is to remain durable when deicing agents are used, it must have proper air entrainment and curing.

Book excerpt: This book forms the proceedings of the international workshop to be held in Essen, Germany. This workshop summarises the conclusion of the technical committee's investigations into the resistance of concrete to freeze-thaw attack, specific in this to resistance with or without de-icing chemicals. It presents the RILEM recommendations on testing the freeze-thaw and de-icing salt resistance of concrete.
Book Synopsis Environmental Impact of Highway Deicing by : Ed Struzeski
Download or read book Environmental Impact of Highway Deicing written by Ed Struzeski and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deicing agents for removal of ice and snow from highways and streets are essential to wintertime road maintenance in most areas of the U.S. Due to the ever-increasing use of highway deicing materials, there has been growing concern as to environmental effects resulting from these practices. The state-of-the-art report critically reviews the available information on methods, equipment and materials used for snow and ice removal; chlorides found in rainfall and municipal sewage during the winter; salt runoff from streets and highways; deicing compounds found in surface streams, public water supplies, groundwater, farm ponds and lakes; special additives incorporated into deicing agents; vehicular corrosion and deterioration of highway structures and pavements; and effects on roadside soils, vegetation and trees. Highway deicing can cause injury and damage across a wide environmental spectrum. Recommendations describe future research, development and demonstration efforts necessary to assess and reduce the adverse impact of highway deicing.

Book Synopsis Social and Economic Factors Affecting Intercity Travel by : Vogt, Ivers & Associates
Download or read book Social and Economic Factors Affecting Intercity Travel written by Vogt, Ivers & Associates and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research study was conducted to define the social and economic factors affecting intercity travel and to use the resulting relationships with existing traffic prediction tools to predict intercity travel. Data used were the external origin-and-destination surveys of 22 cities. Another source of data was the U.S. census. Trip data from the origination-destination studies were summarized by trip purposes and by increasing time rings from the study area centroids. A stepwise regression analysis computer program was used to determine the relationship between trips and social and economic data. In an alternate analysis procedure, the survey data were utilized to determine the amount and characteristics of intercity trip generation.

Download or read book One-cycle Slow-freeze Test for Evaluating Aggregate Performance in Frozen Concrete written by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation was conducted to develop a simple and fast test that could be used to identify aggregates that cause poor concrete performance when frozen. A one-cycle slow- freeze test was developed and evaluated by correlating results with the durability factor obtained from astm method c290 (the standard freezing and thawing test in water). The test method and testing procedures are presented in detail.
Book Synopsis Measurement of Pavement Thickness by Rapid and Nondestructive Methods by : S. D. Howkins

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility is investigated of various acoustic (sonic), nuclear, and electrical techniques for nondestructive measurement of Portland cement and bituminous concrete pavement thickness both during and after construction. Recommendations are made for equipment development and field testing of three specific methods that could potentially result in such measurements with the desired degree of speed and accuracy.

Book Synopsis Density and Moisture Content Measurements by Nuclear Methods by : Robin P. Gardner
Download or read book Density and Moisture Content Measurements by Nuclear Methods written by Robin P. Gardner and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sources of error that have been identified on the gamma-ray soil density gauge are: (1) sensitivity to local density variations, especially at the soil surface, (2) sensitivity to soil composition, and (3) inaccurate calibration techniques. An attempt was made to solve these problems by developing for each gauge calibration models that enable stable and homogenous non-soil standards to be used for calibration. Calibration standards and calibration models for each gauge were found and tested. In the process of developing and testing the new nuclear gauge calibration model, the dual-gauge principal of compensating these gauges for variations in soil composition was discovered. The air-gap method of using this principal is explained and was optimized by using the calibration model developed in the current study.
