Book Synopsis Constraints and Possibilities by : Mauro Ceruti
Download or read book Constraints and Possibilities written by Mauro Ceruti and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1994 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in the Italian,Constraints and Possibilitieshas caused a considerable stir in Europe and has already been translated into several languages. In what noted cyberneticist Heinz von Foerster called a stroke of genius, Ceruti applies a new perspective to our understanding of evolution, and startlingly outlines how the evolution of our knowledge and our knowledge of evolution have in fact been mirror images of each other. Expanding on the intellectual tradition of Gregory Bateson, Ervin Laszlo, Stephen Jay Gould, and Niles Eldredge, Ceruti's work is a testament to the paradigm shift occurring in science today. Indispensable reading for anyone interested in the evolution of our conception of knowledge.
Book Synopsis The Heart and Circulation by : Branko Furst
Download or read book The Heart and Circulation written by Branko Furst and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively revised second edition traces the development of the basic concepts in cardiovascular physiology in light of the accumulated experimental and clinical evidence. It considers the early embryonic circulation, where blood circulation suggests the existence of a motive force, tightly coupled to the metabolic demands of the tissues. It proposes that rather than being an organ of propulsion, the heart, serves as an organ of control, generating pressure by rhythmically impeding blood flow. New and expanded chapters cover the arterial pulse, circulation in the upright posture, microcirculation and functional heart morphology. Heart and Circulation offers a new perspective for deeper understanding of the human cardiovascular system. It is therefore a thought-provoking resource for cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and trainees interested in models of human circulation.
Book Synopsis Introductory Physics for Biological Scientists by : Christof M. Aegerter
Download or read book Introductory Physics for Biological Scientists written by Christof M. Aegerter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do elephants have sturdier thigh bones than humans? Why can't ostriches fly? How do bacteria swim through fluids? With each chapter structured around relevant biological case studies and examples, this engaging, full-colour book introduces fundamental physical concepts essential in the study of biological phenomena. Optics is introduced within the context of butterfly wing colouration, electricity is explained through the propagation of nerve signals, and accelerated motion is conveniently illustrated using the example of the jumping armadillo. Other key physical concepts covered include waves, mechanical forces, thermodynamics and magnetism, and important biological techniques are also discussed within this context, such as gel electrophoresis and fluorescence microscopy. A detailed appendix provides further discussion of the mathematical concepts utilised within the book, and numerous exercises and quizzes allow readers to test their understanding of key concepts. This book is invaluable to students aiming to improve their quantitative and analytical skills and understand the deeper nature of biological phenomena.

Book Synopsis Thermodynamic Network Analysis of Biological Systems by : J. Schnakenberg
Download or read book Thermodynamic Network Analysis of Biological Systems written by J. Schnakenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the question: What fundamental ideas and concepts can phys ics contribute to the analysis of complex systems like those in biology and ecolo gy? The book originated from two lectures which I gave during the winter term 1974/75 and the summer term 1976 at the Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hoch schule in Aachen. The wish for a lecture with this kind of subject was brought forward by students of physics as well as by those from other disciplines like biology, physiology, and engineering sciences. The students of physics were look ing for ways which might lead them from their monodisciplinary studies into the interdisciplinary field between physics and life sciences. The students from the other disciplines suspected that there might be helpful physical concepts and ideas for the analysis of complex systems they ought to become acquainted with. It is clear that a lecture or a book which tries to realize the expectations of both these groups will meet with difficulties arising from the different train ings and background knowledge of physicists and nonphysicists. For the physicists, I have tried to give a brief description of the biological aspect and significance of a problem wherever it seems necessary and appropriate and as far as a physicist like me feels authorized to do so.
