Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several studies have been undertaken to describe the sand beach fauna, which have been divided into 3 zones, although terminology has varied. There have been reported striking similarities in the types of organisms inhabiting sandy beaches in various locations. The degree of wave exposure, as well as the environment of the beach and the coarseness of the sand appear to be major factors controlling the diversity of sand beach communities. The biology of selected organisms includes Emerita talpoida (mole crabs), Domax spp. (coquina clams), Haustoriid Amphipods, Surf zone fishes, Ocyzpode quadrata (ghost crab), Polychaetes and Sea turtles. Most of the studies reported little or no long term adverse effects of beach nourishment. The effects of beach nourishment were reported similar to the effects of storm events. Experimental sediment burial studies were carried out on the intertidal organisms, with the results shown in Table VIII. The results were dependent upon the coarseness and depth of the sediment. Recommendations included: A general review of data on the effects of beach nourishment on sand beach macrofauna suggests that minimal biological effects result. Some mortality of organisms may occur when grain size is a poor match to existing sediments; recovery of the beach system appears to be rapid. Turtle nesting may be negatively affected due to sand compaction for about one year. Further biological monitoring should be continued until more data is available. Nourishment sand should match natural sand as closely as possible in size distribution and chemical characteristics. The upper beach should be plowed following nourishment to counteract compaction in turtle nesting areas. Avoid covering dune vegetation with sand. Try to avoid nourishment during turtle nesting; if this is not possible, relocate turtle nests. Biological monitoring techniques should be standardized according to specific guidelines.

Book excerpt: Many coastal communities have built structures at their beaches and added quantities of sand in contoured designs to combat erosion. Are such beach nourishment projects technically and economically sound? Or are they nothing more than building sand castles, as critics claim? Beach Nourishment and Protection provides a sound technical basis for decision-making, with recommendations regarding the utility of beach nourishment, the appropriate role of federal agencies, responsibility for cost, design methodology, and other issues. This volume: Examines the economic and social role of beaches, the history of beach nourishment projects, and management strategies for shore protection. Discusses the role of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies, with a close-up look at the federal flood insurance program. Explores the state of the art in project design and prediction of outcomes, including the controversy over the use of traditional and nontraditional shore protection devices. Addresses what is known about the environmental impacts of beach nourishment. Identifies what outcomes should be targeted for continued monitoring by project officials. Beach Nourishment and Protection provides insight into the technical, economic, environmental, and policy implications of beach nourishment and protection, with examples and suggested research directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes of this handbook provide a comprehensive account of the emerging and vibrant science of the ecological restoration of both habitats and species. Ecological restoration aims to achieve complete structural and functional, self-maintaining biological integrity following disturbance. In practice, any theoretical model is modified by a number of economic, social and ecological constraints. Consequently, material that might be considered as rehabilitation, enhancement, reconstruction or re-creation is also included. Restoration in Practice provides details of state-of-the-art restoration practice in a range of biomes within terrestrial and aquatic (marine, coastal and freshwater) ecosystems. Policy and legislative issues on all continents are also outlined and discussed. The accompanying volume, Principles of Restoration defines the underlying principles of restoration ecology. The Handbook of Ecological Restoration will be an invaluable resource to anyone concerned with the restoration, rehabilitation, enhancement or creation of habitats in aquatic or terrestrial systems, throughout the world.

This manual applies to HQUSACE elements, major subordinate commands, districts, laboratories, and field operating activities having responsibility for design, construction, and operation of civil works projects within the nearshore coastal region. This manual discusses the data needed, identifies data sources, and discusses parameters and methods applicable to beach fill design procedures. The importance of borrow material characteristics and procedures for adjusting the fill quantity to account for differences between natural beach material and borrow material are presented. Monitoring needs prior to, during, and following construction are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Tremendous changes have occurred this century in the nation's coastal habitats, in the way society views them, and in the way they are managed. This volume offers a complete, highly readable assessment of how scientific knowledge and coastal engineering capabilities can be more effectively used to protect and restore marine habitat. It addresses traditional and innovative uses of technology to protect remaining natural marine habitats, to enhance or restore those that have been altered, and to create marine habitat from lands used for other purposes. The use of dredged materials as a vital resource in protection and restoration work is explored. The book also explores organizational, management, and regulatory barriers to using the best available technology and engineering practice. Specific options for improvements are offered in each area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition - now with Nancy Jackson as a co-author - continues the themes of the first edition: the need to restore the biodiversity, ecosystem health, and ecosystem services provided by coastal landforms and habitats, especially in the light of climate change. The second edition reports on progress made on practices identified in the first edition, presents additional case studies, and addresses new and emerging issues. It analyzes the tradeoffs involved in restoring beaches and dunes - especially on developed coasts - the most effective approaches to use, and how stakeholders can play an active role. The concept of restoration is broad, and includes physical, ecological, economic, social, and ethical principles and ideals. The book will be valuable for coastal scientists, engineers, planners, and managers, as well as shorefront residents. It will also serve as a useful supplementary reference textbook in courses dealing with issues of coastal management and ecology.
