The objective of this work was to prove the feasibility of highly nonlinear, photosensitive, Liquid Crystalline (LC) materials that a) possess photosensitivity comparable to that of photoconductive semiconductors used in LC spatial light modulator, and b) allow extremely strong modulation of the refractive index (modulation of birefringence). Such unique combination of photosensitivity and large optically induced index modulation property of LC would make these materials the prime candidate for a new generation of high performance dynamic holography devices, optical limiters, spatial light modulators (SLM) and other signal/image processing and optically or electronically tunable diffractive devices. These materials will trigger new markets due to drastically reduced cost for intelligent optical systems. The goals of the project were achieved by 1) developing NLC-systems with enhanced optical nonlinearity in blue/green, red and infrared region of wavelengths; 2) study into the mechanisms of photoexcitation-induced enhancement of optical nonlinearity; and successful demonstrations of 3) new principles of spatial light modulation; 4) wave transformation with efficiency over 90%; 5) image conversion between incoherent beams with the aid of NLC; and 6) optical limiting with dynamic range greater 3000.

This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoalignment possesses significant advantages in comparison with the usual ‘rubbing’ treatment of the substrates of liquid crystal display (LCD) cells as it is a non-contact method with a high resolution. A new technique recently pioneered by the authors of this book, namely the photo-induced diffusion reorientation of azodyes, does not involve any photochemical or structural transformations of the molecules. This results in photoaligning films which are robust and possess good aligning properties making them particularly suitable for the new generation of liquid crystal devices. Photoalignment of Liquid Crystalline Materials covers state-of-the-art techniques and key applications, as well as the authors’ own diffusion model for photoalignment. The book aims to stimulate new research and development in the field of liquid crystalline photoalignment and in so doing, enable the technology to be used in large scale LCD production. Key features: Provides a full examination of the mechanisms of photoalignment. Examines the properties of liquid crystals during photoalignment, with particular reference made to the effect on their chemical structure and stability. Considers the most useful photosensitive materials and preparation procedures suitable for liquid crystalline photoalignment. Presents several methods for photoalignment of liquid crystals. Compares various applications of photoalignment technology for in-cell patterned polarizers and phase retarders, transflective and micro displays, security and other liquid crystal devices. Through its interdisciplinary approach, this book is aimed at a wide range of practising electrical engineers, optical engineers, display technologists, materials scientists, physicists and chemists working on the development of liquid crystal devices. It will also appeal to researchers and graduate students taking courses on liquid crystals or display technologies. The Society for Information Display (SID) is an international society, which has the aim of encouraging the development of all aspects of the field of information display. Complementary to the aims of the society, the Wiley-SID series is intended to explain the latest developments in information display technology at a professional level. The broad scope of the series addresses all facets of information displays from technical aspects through systems and prototypes to standards and ergonomics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many fascinating applications of liquid crystals -- a material that possesses behaviour in between the crystalline solid and the liquid phases -- have been reported by the RandD workers. These materials exhibit amazing features that make them indispensable for versatile usage. Liquid crystal based flat display panels are now found in mass volume in use as television and computer monitors. Apart from this, liquid crystals can be used in sensing and communication systems. The aim of this book is three-fold: (i) to make the expert researchers aware of the advancements in several areas of liquid crystal technology, (ii) to fuel the novice researchers interest through varieties of research directions, and (iii) to give a glimpse of the merged ideas to multi-disciplinary researchers for conceptual development of novel devices. Starting from the introduction of liquid crystals, this book covers topics ranging from nanoparticle synthesis to their varieties and physical and chemical properties along with their possible optics and electronics oriented applications. These include chemical bonding in liquid crystals, the use of liquid crystals in nanoparticle synthesis, the effects of liquid crystals on the thermal isomerisation of azoderivatives, sensing organosulphur compounds by liquid crystal supported chemically functionalised surfaces, electro-optic behaviour of liquid crystals and their applications in dynamic holographic correctors, optics of chiral liquid crystals, electromagnetic behaviour of liquid crystal based optical fibres and applications in 3D electronic displays. These topics are presented in nine chapters written by expert scientists in their respective areas of research in liquid crystals. Some of the chapters are devoted to the physics and chemistry of liquid crystals, and some touch upon their interesting applications. It is expected that the book will be of immense use for novice, expert and multi-disciplinary researchers in universities and research institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid crystal (LC) materials and devices play a central role in numerous established and emerging technologies. This book focuses on several large areas of research including polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technology and twisted smectic materials and applications, as well as nontraditional LC materials and applications. Various aspects of liquid crystal composite technology are featured. Of note is the work concentrating on the use of holography to imprint information into thin films of these systems. Three different approaches for employing holography with liquid crystal materials are discussed. In the ferroelectric liquid crystal arena, the intricacies of different chiral smectic-C architectures are described using detailed X-ray structural experiments on freestanding films. The differences between a molecule and a phase are explored. A number of nondisplay applications using this class of materials are presented and include topics such as adaptive optics, real-time holography and fiber-to-fiber interconnects. Also discussed are glass-forming liquid crystalline films and their ability to polarize photoluminescent emission, their utility in the fabrication of mid-wavelength infrared polarizers, and their utility in the fabrication of bistable electro-optical elements and broadband reflectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research program was aimed at gaining a complete fundamental understanding of recently discovered nonlinear electro-optical effects in liquid crystalline systems, and exploring their applications in holographic storage, optical wave-mixing and phase conjugation beam/image processing and modulation devices. In particular, the mechanisms and dynamics of photo-charge generation, space charge fields and the resultant refractive index change and holographic grating formation in dye- and fullerene doped-nematic liquid crystal have been quantitatively investigated. This work has established such liquid crystalline materials as among the most sensitive nonlinear optical materials for performing holographic storage, wave-mixing, beam and imaging processing, and switching processes. Basic understanding of the photophysics, electro-dynamics and electro-optical properties of these liquid crystalline material systems will be important for related fields such as electro-optical flat panelled displays and imaging processing, and new material development. Investigation was made of nonlinear fiber arrays made by filling capillary arrays with liquid crystals in their isotropic phase, and demonstrated highly efficient optical image/beam switching and intensity/power controlling processes.
