Book excerpt: The focus of the work described in this report is on single electron transfer reactions of excited states which culminate in the formation of stable or metastable even electron species. For the most part the studies have involved even electron organic substrates which are thus converted photochemically to odd electron species and then at some stage reconvert to even electron products. These reactions generally fall into two rather different categories. In one set of studies we have examined reactions in which the metastable reagents generated by single electron transfer quenching of an excited state undergo novel fragmentation reactions, chiefly involving C-C bond cleavage. These reactions often culminate in novel and potentially useful chemical reactions and frequently have the potential for leading to new chemical products otherwise unaffordable by conventional reaction paths. In a rather different investigation we have also studied reactions in which single electron transfer quenching of an excited state is followed by subsequent reactions which lead reversibly to metastable two electron products which, often stable in themselves, can nonetheless be reacted with each other or with other reagents to regenerate the starting materials with release of energy. 66 refs., 9 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: The studies have focused on rapid, efficient bond-fragmentation reactions initiated through photoinduced electron transfer. Electron transfer induced fragmentation of a number of donors have been examined, especially 1,2 diamines and related compounds. Two of the amines fragment with rate constants of 3 x 108 to 2 x 109 M−1sec−1. A series of amino-substituted pinacols and related compounds have also been examined; they undergo similar but slower fragmentation processes when converted to their cation radicals by photoinduced electron transfer. The studies with linked and polymeric electron donor- electron acceptor coupled molecules have also progressed. Several polymers containing diamine repeat units and anthraquinone or nitroaromatic acceptors have also been prepared that can be photoactivated by visible irradiation; they fragment efficiently in solution and photodegrade even in the solid state. The studies of singlet oxygen initiated fragmentation reactions of diamines, amino alcohols, and aminoketones have nearly been completed. Attention have been turned to fragmentable electron acceptors such as p- cyanobenzyl bromide; irradiation of electron donors such as methyl- or methoxy-naphthalenes can initiate efficient fragmentation of the electron deficient bromide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph attempts to unify these diverse and exciting new developments within a common framework. First, the physical principles underlying heterogenous electron-transfer processes are outlined in a concise way and are compared to the homogeneous counterpart. This analysis includes the notion of the Fermi level in liquids and solids as well as the distribution of electronic energy levels in solids and liquids. A comparison is made between the salient kinetic features of homogeneous and heterogeneous electron transfer reactions. This establishes the basis for the subsequent treatment of the transduction of excitation energy and photo-initiated electron transfer in organized molecular assemblies, such as micelles, vesicles and monolayers. Transmembrane redox processes are critically reviewed. Particular attention is given to semiconductor electrodes and particles. This includes a discussion of quantum size effects, the nature of space charge layers as well as surface states and the dynamics of charge carrier-induced redox reactions at the semiconductor solution interface. These processes are of fundamental importance in such diverse fields as photochromism, electrochromic displays, electroreprography and photography, information storage, photocatalysis, photodegradation of paints, and solar energy conversion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Electron Transfer Chemistry, Volume 4 presents the reaction mechanisms involving the movement of single electrons. This book discusses the electron transfer reactions in organic, biochemical, organometallic, and excited state systems. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the photochemical behavior of two classes of sulfonium salt derivatives. This text then examines the parameters that control the efficiencies for radical ion pair formation. Other chapters consider the progress in the development of parameters that control the dynamics and reaction pathways for radical ion pairs produced by the diffusional quenching of photoexcited molecules. This book discusses as well the criteria for distinguishing concerted from stepwise mechanisms in electrochemical and homogeneous reductive cleavage reactions in polar solvents. The final chapter deals with excited-state chemical transformation, particularly on photoinduced SET reactions in which amines and related substances serve as electron donors. This book is a valuable resource for scientists and electrochemists.

This book was released on 2001-05-02 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron transfer is the most important process to take place in natural and artificial chemical systems, playing a fundamental role, for example, in photosynthesis as well as in photography. Electron transfer reactions - oxidations and reductions - are involved in, among others, a variety of energy conversion processes, analytical methods, synthetic strategies, and information processing systems. This five-volume work is the only comprehensive yet up-to-date reference on electron transfer processes. Following a foreword by Nobel prize-winner R. A. Marcus, renowned experts from all over the world provide an interdisciplinary overview of every aspect of electron transfer including theoretical-physicochemical backgrounds, latest analytical techniques to identify, monitor and measure the rate of electron transfer, utilizing electron transfer reactions in organic synthesis and catalysis, electron transfer in the gas phase or in special heterogeneous systems such as zeolites or sensitized electrodes. Other central issues are the study of biological systems and the biomimetic electron transfer processes in artificial supramolecular systems. Finally, a complete volume is dedicated to the application of electron transfer in molecular-level electronics, imaging processes and energy conversion. Each chapter is complemented by numerous tables, formulae and illustrations providing an indispensable wealth of information. All references are cross-indexed throughout the work for easy access to this highly complex topic. Whether for quickly looking-up a keyword or as a thorough introduction to a special aspect, this is an essential handbook for everyone working in the field, from experts to postgraduates, from synthetic chemists, physicochemists or biochemists to research groups in material sciences.
