Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chimpanzees, including bonobos and common chimpanzees, are our closest living relatives. However, surprisingly, the information about the soft tissues of bonobos is very scarce, making it difficult to discuss and understand human evolution. This book, which is the first photographic and descriptive musculoskeletal atlas of bonobos (Pan paniscus), adopts the same format as the photographic atlases of other apes previously published by the same authors. These books are part of a series of monographs that will set out the comparative and phylogenetic context of the gross anatomy and evolutionary history of the soft tissue morphology of modern humans and their closest relatives. The present atlas, which includes detailed high quality photographs of the musculoskeletal structures from most anatomical regions of the body as well as textual information about the attachments, innervation, function and weight of the respective muscles, is based on dissections of seven bonobos, including adults, adolescents, infants and fetuses, and males and females, and on an extensive review of the literature for comparisons with common chimpanzees. It therefore provides an updated review of the anatomical variations within chimpanzees as well as an extensive list of synonyms used in the literature to designate the structures covered here. Moreover, contrary to the previous photographic atlases of apes, it also provides details on neurovascular structures such as the brachial and lumbrosacral plexuses. The book will therefore be of interest to students, teachers and researchers focusing on primatology, comparative anatomy, functional morphology, zoology, and physical anthropology and to medical students, doctors and researchers who are curious about the origin, evolution, homology and variations of the musculoskeletal and neurovascular structures of modern humans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most textbooks and atlases of human anatomy chronicle only a few cases of muscle variations in the "normal" human population, or of muscle anomalies within congenital malformations. Consequently, there is a misconception of what is considered "normal" human anatomy and what that looks like. Each person within the "normal" population has at least a few muscle variations, and there are millions of individuals born globally each year with muscle anomalies. There are crucial knowledge gaps between what is taught, what students learn, what textbooks and atlases show, and what truly happens in nature and within our species. This handbook fills this gap by: 1) providing a comparative evolutionary context for muscle variations and defects in humans, 2) summarizing the major types of variations and anomalies found in humans, and 3) including didactic figures for a visually engaging learning experience. This book is of interest to students, professors, and researchers in biological anthropology, comparative anatomy, functional morphology, zoology, and evolutionary and developmental biology, as well as to clinicians and practicing health professionals. Key Features Summarizes most recorded variations and anomalies for each muscle in the human body Provides information on the comparative anatomy of each muscle, including evolutionary differences from our closest living relatives, the apes Includes didactic illustrations of the variations and anomalies for a visually engaging learning experience Comprehensively reviews literature to document prevalence information for each variation and anomaly, within humans Related Titles Brown, D. Atlas of Ultrasound-Guided Musculoskeletal Injections includes numerous tips and tricks from the field's most experienced and respected practitioners. This unique and state-of–the-art text is ideal for physiatrists, rheumatologists, sports medicine physicians, radiologists, pain medicine specialists, and orthopedic surgeons. With a focus on safety and efficacy, this atlas is a worthwhile investment for any practitioner looking to add ultrasound-guided procedures to their practice or is looking to sharpen their skills. The book opens with informative coverage of the fundamentals of MSK US, including ultrasound physics, preparation and set-up for MSK US procedures, and the rationale and evidence for performing these procedures. The main body of the book dedicates one chapter to a specific US-guided injection or procedure. Each chapter design includes sections on key points, pertinent anatomy, common pathology, US imaging, indications, and technique. The book is divided into 8 sections: Shoulder Elbow Hand and wrist Pelvis Knee Foot and ankle Special procedures (rotator cuff, Percutaneous Trigger finger release, Ultrasound-guided Carpal Tunnel release, and Tenex) Atlas of Ultrasound-Guided Musculoskeletal Injections includes coverage of the full spectrum of procedures, ranging from basic US guided joint injections to perinerual injections, tenotomies, and surgical procedures such as percutaneous A1 pulley release, making the book the field's first true cornerstone text and the "go to" resource for any clinician interested in the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human footprints provide some of the most emotive and tangible evidence of our ancestors. They provide evidence of stature, presence, behaviour and in the case of early hominin footprints, evidence with respect to the evolution of human gait and foot anatomy. While human footprint sites are rare in the geological record the number of sites around the World has increased in recent years, along with the analytical tools available for their study. The aim of this book is to provide a definitive review of these recent developments with specific reference to the increased availability of three-dimensional digital elevation models of human tracks at many key sites. The book is divided into eight chapters. Following an introduction the second chapter reviews modern field methods in human ichnology focusing on the development of new analytical tools. The third chapter then reviews the major footprint sites around the World including details on several unpublished examples. Chapters then follow on the role of geology in the formation and preservation of tracks, on the inferences that can be made from human tracks and the final chapter explores the application of this work to forensic science. Audience: This volume will be of interest to researchers and students across a wide range of disciplines – sedimentology, archaeology, forensics and palaeoanthropology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a comprehensive, critical introduction to vertebrate zooarchaeology, the field that explores the history of human relations with animals from the Pliocene to the Industrial Revolution. The book is organized into five sections, each with an introduction, that leads the reader systematically through this swiftly expanding field. Section One presents a general introduction to zooarchaeology, key definitions, and an historical survey of the emergence of zooarchaeology in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, and introduces the conceptual approach taken in the book. This volume is designed to allow readers to integrate data from the book along with that acquired elsewhere within a coherent analytical framework. Most of its chapters take the form of critical “review articles,” providing a portal into both the classic and current literature and contextualizing these with original commentary. Summaries of findings are enhanced by profuse illustrations by the author and others.
