Book excerpt: A description is presented of a study of the photodissociation dynamics of molecules in a molecular beam. Photo-fragmentation translational spectroscopy has been utilized to observe the photodissociation dynamics of ozone. Using a supersonic molecular beam and a 10 nanosecond pulsed laser at lambda = 266 nm, the velocities of the fragment products are measured by the method of time of flight. The resolution of the time of flight spectrum of ozone is sufficiently high that the electronic and vibrational states are clearly resolved and identified. Above the threshold (lambda 310 nm), the quantum yield for the production of O(1D) has been estimated in the past to be unity for the process O3 (1A1) + h.nu.)lambda 300 nm) .--. O3(1B2) .--. O2(1.delta./sub g/) + O(1D). However a small production of O2 (3.sigma./sub g/−) + O(3P) has been observed in this study. The O2(1.delta./sub g/) product yields four vibrational states (v = 0, 1, 2, 3) which yields a vibrational temperature of 2700°K along with narrow energy distributions of rotational levels. These energy distributions are compared with photodissociation models along with the polarization dependence of the dissociative process which was also measured. 143 references.

Book excerpt: The Ar-F laser (193 nm) was used to photodissociate molecular beams of SO2, CS2, aryl halides, phenyl cyanide and isocyanide, nitroalkenes and nitrobenzene, and H2O2. The translational energy distributions of the fragments were measured. In addition, the internal energy distributions of CS (from CS2) and OH fragments from H2O2 were measured. The excess of photon energy over bond energy is released primarily as vibration for SO2 and primarily as translation for H2O2. For CS2 comparable amounts of energy appear in translation and vibration; 80% of the S atoms appear in the 1(D) state. Both phenylcyanide, C6H5CN and phenylisocyanide, C6H5NC gave CN and C6H5 fragments. In spite of the greater energy available, C6H5NC yielded slower CN fragments. The iodobenzene fragmentation occurred by two processes, one from the initially excited state which gave fast fragments and the other from a lower energy state which gave slower fragments and, of course, more internal energy. Book excerpt: This monograph reviews the recent progress in vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization and photodissociation processes. Photoionization, photoelectron, and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques have played an important role in revealing the photoionization and photodissociation dynamics of molecules in the vacuum ultraviolet region and in providing accurate energetic and spectroscopic information of ions as well as neutral molecules. The book represents the first detailed review of major experimental developments in the studies of single vacuum ultraviolet photon ionization and dissociation processes of gaseous molecules and clusters.

Book excerpt: We conduct studies utilizing unimolecular photodissociation in two apparatus: (1) a high vacuum molecular beam chamber capable of time-of-flight mass spectrometry and velocity map imaging and (2) a newly constructed high-pressure flow tube apparatus with laser-induced fluorescence detection. Tunable, pulsed ns-laser systems initiate photodissociation in both experiments and probe the resultant products. The molecular beam apparatus resolves quantum-specific product states following CHBrCl2 photodissociation in the Ã-band, leading to CHCl2 and Br photofragments. We use resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization to distinguish between the spin-orbit states of the Br products and velocity map imaging to probe energy disposal at a variety of photolysis wavelengths. We examine the role of electronic surface crossing in the dynamics and relative quantum yields for the exit channels. Additionally, we constructed and characterized a flow tube apparatus designed for measurements of unimolecular kinetics relevant to atmospheric chemistry. The work presented will cover methodology for characterizing fluid dynamics in the flow tube and the laser-induced fluorescence detection capabilities we use to probe products generated in the flow. By varying the transport properties of the flow, we aim to extract rate coefficients for unimolecular processes that compete with bimolecular chemistry in the troposphere under a variety of conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photodissociation induced by the absorption of single photons permits the detailed study of molecular dynamics such as the breaking of bonds, internal energy transfer and radiationless transitions. The availability of powerful lasers operating over a wide frequency range has stimulated rapid development of new experimental techniques which make it possible to analyse photodissociation processes in unprecedented detail. This text elucidates the achievements in calculating photodissociation cross-sections and fragment state distributions from first principles, starting from multi-dimensional potential energy surfaces and the Schrödinger equation of nuclear motion. Following an extended introduction in which the various types of observables are outlined, the book summarises the basic theoretical tools, namely the time-independent and the time-dependent quantum mechanical approaches as well as the classical picture of photodissociation. The discussions of absorption spectra, diffuse vibrational structures, the vibrational and rotational state distributions of the photofragments form the core of the book. More specific topics such as the dissociation of vibrationally excited molecules, emission during dissociation, or nonadiabatic effects are also discussed. It will be of interest to graduate students and senior scientists working in molecular physics, spectroscopy, molecular collisions and molecular kinetics.

Book excerpt: The major thrust of this research project is to elucidate detailed dynamics of simple reactions that are theoretically important and to unravel the mechanism of complex chemical reactions or photochemical processes that play important roles in many macroscopic processes. Molecular beams of reactants are used to study individual reactive encounters between molecules or to monitor photodissociation events in a collision-free environment. Most of the information is derived from measurement of the product fragment energy, angular, and state distributions. Recent activities are centered on the mechanisms of elementary chemical reactions involving oxygen atoms with unsaturated hydrocarbons, the dynamics of endothermic substitution reactions, the dependence of the chemical reactivity of electronically excited atoms on the alignment of excited orbitals, the primary photochemical processes of polyatomic molecules, intramolecular energy transfer of chemically activated and locally excited molecules, the energetics of free radicals that are important to combustion processes, the infrared-absorption spectra of carbonium ions and hydrated hydronium ions, and bond-selective photodissociation through electric excitation. 34 refs.

Book excerpt: This lecture notes book presents how enhanced structural information of biomolecular ions can be obtained from interaction with photons of specific frequency - laser light. The methods described in the book "Laser photodissociation and spectroscopy of mass-separated biomolecular ions" make use of the fact that the discrete energy and fast time scale of photoexcitation can provide more control in ion activation. This activation is the crucial process producing structure-informative product ions that cannot be generated with more conventional heating methods, such as collisional activation. The book describes how the powerful separation capabilities and sensitivity of mass spectrometry (MS) can be combined with the structural insights from spectroscopy by measuring vibrational and electronic spectra of trapped analytes. The implementation of laser-based photodissociation techniques in MS requires basic knowledge of tunable light sources and ion trapping devices. This book introduces the reader to key concepts and approaches in molecular spectroscopy, and the light sources and ion traps employed in such experiments. The power of the methods is demonstrated by spectroscopic interrogation of a range of important biomolecular systems, including peptides, proteins, and saccharides, with laser light in the ultraviolet-visible, and infrared range. The book "Laser photodissociation and spectroscopy of mass-separated biomolecular ions" is an indispensable resource for students and researchers engaged or interested in this emerging field. It provides the solid background of key concepts and technologies for the measurements, discusses state-of-the-art experiments, and provides an outlook on future developments and applications.
