Book excerpt: The Hilarious New Book by the Writers of the Emmy-winning Hit Show Modern Family Every week, the families of Modern Family have something to learn. Sometimes it's a lesson about parenting. Other times, it's about surviving marriage--or getting along with the dreaded in-laws. But no matter what, the Pritchetts always find a fresh and incredibly funny way to teach us a little bit about life and love along the way. Now, America's most beloved family has finally opened up their albums and shared some of their favorite quotes, photos, and memories for us to enjoy all over again. Touching on everything from motherhood and teenagers to siblings, school, and love, Modern Family: Wit and Wisdom from America's Favorite Family features some of the funniest lines from the show, including: Claire: Look at them: A minute ago they were babies, and now they're driving, and soon we'll all be dead. Phil: I called the florist and ordered one dozen Mylar balloons. Good luck staying mad, honey. Gloria: I'm Colombian. I know a fake crime scene when I see one. Jay: She's my daughter. You're my wife. Let's remember what's important here: There's a football game on. Mitchell: It's Cameron's turn to be out in the world, interacting with grown-ups while I get to stay at home and plot the death of Dora the Explorer. With exclusive chapter introductions by each family member, this book will leave the show's millions of fans laughing out loud at--and falling even more in love with--the funniest family on television. Created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, Modern Family is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows on television. The show's writers and actors have won multiple Emmys and Golden Globes, as well as awards from the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America. The Pritchett family has won a few trophies here and there, but Mitchell destroyed them all in a fit of jealous rage.

Book excerpt: From 50 yards and in, no golfer in history has demonstrated more talent, flair, creativity and precision, or generated more raw excitement, than Phil Mickelson. His ability with the sand wedge and putter are legendary not only among fans but his peers as well, and it is his skill with those clubs that is primarily responsible for his winning 34 tournaments on the PGA Tour, including three major championships. In his first-ever instruction book, Mickelson explains in detail how to master every phase of the short game. Mickelson maintains that any golfer of average ability can become a deadly short-game player by approaching the subject with a blend of science (proper mechanics and setup) and art (imagination and feel). Mickelson does a fine job explaining both; combining the wisdom of his great teachers with his own fertile imagination, cultivated from 34 years of experimentation, trial and error. No golfer can afford to miss out on Mickelson′s secrets and tips.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glenn Alexander Magee's pathbreaking book argues that Hegel was decisively influenced by the Hermetic tradition, a body of thought with roots in Greco-Roman Egypt. Magee traces the influence on Hegel of such Hermetic thinkers as Baader, Böhme, Bruno, and Paracelsus, and fascination with occult and paranormal phenomena. Hegel and the Hermetic Tradition covers Hegel's philosophical corpus and shows that his engagement with Hermeticism lasted throughout his career and intensified during his final years in Berlin. Viewing Hegel as a Hermetic thinker has implications for a more complete understanding of the modern philosophical tradition, and German idealism in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What epistemic assumptions framed eighteenth-century thinkers' speculations regarding origins? What, if anything, connected these speculations? The best way to understand the Enlightenment's obsession with origins is to study it in conjunction with the contemporary conceptualization of originality as a criterion of aesthetic value, Catherine Labio maintains. Her expansive survey of the era's thought places special emphasis on epistemology and is genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing on such fields as anthropology, geometry, historiography, literary criticism, and political economy. One of the most striking facets of Enlightenment thought, according to Labio, is the emergence of aesthetics as a master discourse that enabled its users to make sense of worlds ostensibly unrelated to the arts. In particular, once knowledge became defined as knowledge of things made by human beings, originality became valued not only for its novelty but also as a guarantee of epistemological certainty. Labio analyzes the views held by a variety of European thinkers—including Baumgarten, Condillac, Descartes, Kant, Locke, Rousseau, Adam Smith, Vico, and Edward Young—on the origins of ideas, languages, nations, nature, and wealth. Throughout, the author deals with a wide range of primary and secondary materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What is the basic building block of the universe?' Thales of Miletus was the first to ask this fundamental, yet to be answered, question in the sixth century B.C. This book offers an in-depth account of the answers he gave and of his adventure into many areas of learning: philosophy, science, mathematics and astronomy. Thales proved that the events of nature were comprehensible to man and could be explained without the intervention of mythological beings. Henceforth they became subject to investigation, experiment, questioning and discussion. Presenting for the first time in the English language a comprehensive study of Thales of Miletus, Patricia O'Grady brings Thales out of pre-Socratic shadows into historical illumination and explores why this historical figure has proved to be of lasting significance.
