Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy of William Ellery Channing The purpose of this book is to draw attention to certain aspects of Channing's thought which were, I believe, of fundamental importance in his own eyes, but which do not appear hitherto to have attracted sufficient consideration. In my Opinion Channing' s status as a thinker has not received adequate recognition; indeed, in my judgment, he is one of the outstanding figures in the history oc r1st1an th.ought Whether this estimate be sound the reader will have ample opportunity for deciding in View of the evidence which Is placed before him. In any case, I think that he will agree that Channing's constructive work was at least as significant as the destructive polemic which is so widely associated with his name. And the basic principle upon which it rests is the doctrine of essential sameness which is the intellectual justifica tion of the mystical interest which so largely dominated his thinking, and became ever more manifest until its close. Such is the thesis which I endeavor to substantiate. I take great pleasure in acknowledging my obligations to Professors Katherine Gilbert of Duke University, James Luther Adams of the Meadville School of Religion, and Edward D. Myers of Washington and Lee University, who read the typescript of this book in whole or in part, and in thanking them for the numerous valuable suggestions which they so kindly proffered. Needless to say, I alone am responsible for all the interpretations offered and the conclusions advanced, but to them, and to many other friends, too numerous to mention, whose encouragement has been a keen stimulus, my gratitude is as profound as it is inefiaceable. Under the influence of Søren Kierkegaard and of Saint Ignacio de Loyola, among others, author made a deep foray into the existential problems of contemporary man, radically distancing himself from the Aristotelian prime mover and affirming the spiritual need to believe in a personal God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1997 and now back in print, Making the American Self by Daniel Walker Howe, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of What Hath God Wrought, charts the genesis and fascinating trajectory of a central idea in American history. One of the most precious liberties Americans have always cherished is the ability to "make something of themselves"--to choose not only an occupation but an identity. Examining works by Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and others, Howe investigates how Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries engaged in the process of "self-construction," "self-improvement," and the "pursuit of happiness." He explores as well how Americans understood individual identity in relation to the larger body politic, and argues that the conscious construction of the autonomous self was in fact essential to American democracy--that it both shaped and was in turn shaped by American democratic institutions. "The thinkers described in this book," Howe writes, "believed that, to the extent individuals exercised self-control, they were making free institutions--liberal, republican, and democratic--possible." And as the scope of American democracy widened so too did the practice of self-construction, moving beyond the preserve of elite white males to potentially all Americans. Howe concludes that the time has come to ground our democracy once again in habits of personal responsibility, civility, and self-discipline esteemed by some of America's most important thinkers. Erudite, beautifully written, and more pertinent than ever as we enter a new era of individual and governmental responsibility, Making the American Self illuminates an impulse at the very heart of the American experience.

Book excerpt: The Catalogue of Extolled Philosophers of the Millettarian Tradition is the seventy-ninth instalment in the Little Blue Book Series and comprises the fifth to thirteenth discourses of the Tetradoxy, which is itself the fourth disquisition of the Omnidoxy, Astronism’s founding text. This publication is constituted by a significant list of philosophers who are considered by the Astronist Institution to be distinguished in the field of philosophy and are therefore considered as having made major contributions as all extolled persons are expected to have achieved. The Little Blue Book Series was created and first published by Cometan himself as a way to simplify and commercialise the immensity of the two million word length of the Omnidoxy into smaller, more bite-size publications. A successful series from its very first published entry, the Little Blue Book Series has gone on to become a symbol of Astronist commercial literature and a way for Cometan’s words to reach readers of all ages and abilities who remain daunted by the beauty and yet the sheer extensiveness of the Omnidoxy as the longest religious text in history.

Broaddus argues that the genteel and coherent voices with which these writers discuss literature and high culture break apart when they begin to write about material issues related to slavery, abolition, and war against the background of growing dissent between North and South. Genteel Rhetoric examines the writers as they live through and write about the Civil War - Emerson and Lowell from a safe distance, Holmes searching for his wounded son in Maryland, and Higginson in the thick of action as colonel of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first regiment of former slaves in the Union army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When James Ogilvie arrived in America in 1793, he was a deeply ambitious but impoverished teacher. By the time he returned to Britain in 1817, he had become a bona fide celebrity known simply as Mr. O, counting the nation's leading politicians and intellectuals among his admirers. And then, like so many meteoric American luminaries afterward, he fell from grace. The Strange Genius of Mr. O is at once the biography of a remarkable performer--a gaunt Scottish orator who appeared in a toga--and a story of the United States during the founding era. Ogilvie's career featured many of the hallmarks of celebrity we recognize from later eras: glamorous friends, eccentric clothing, scandalous religious views, narcissism, and even an alarming drug habit. Yet he captivated audiences with his eloquence and inaugurated a golden age of American oratory. Examining his roller-coaster career and the Americans who admired (or hated) him, this fascinating book renders a vivid portrait of the United States in the midst of invention.
