Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 6 Two of far nobler shape, erect and tall, God-like erect, with native honour crowned, In naked majesty, seemed lords of all. Paradise Lost, book iv. Of this noble and dignified structure, the portion that claims our first notice is the head, the capital that crowns the fabric. Its elevated position; its ample expansion of countenance, - the index of the operations of mind; its rounded and globular form; its comely covering of hair, hanging in the unadorned simplicity of nature, or modified by the contrivances of art; and its serving as the seat of almost all the organs of sense; are prerogatives that entitle it to our peculiar consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 6: July-December, 1878 The question of the origin of nebula is simplified by the theory, now generally received, that stars are suns like our own, and that nebula are in all probability stars in process of formation. The problem will therefore be most readily attacked by considering, first, the origin of our sun, as this orb, being the one most accessible to us, is that with which we are best acquainted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 25: New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine, Annals of Philosophy, and Journal of Science; July-December, 1844 Chlorine gas, which has been exposed to the daylight or to sunshine, possesses qualities which are not possessed by chlorine which has been made in the dark. This is shown by the circumstance, that chlorine which has been exposed to the sunshine has obtained from that exposure the property of speedily uniting with hydrogen gas; a property not possessed by chlorine which has been made and kept in the dark. This quality gained by the chlorine arises from its having absorbed tithonic rays corresponding in refrangibility to the indigo. It is not a transient, but apparently a permanent property, the rays so absorbed becoming latent, and the effect lasting for an unknown period of time. The facts which I shall proceed to describe will be interesting to chemists, because they plainly lead us to suspect that the descriptions we have of the properties of all elementary and compound bodies are either inaccurate or confused. These properties are such as bodies exhibit after they have been exposed to the light; we still require to know what are the properties they possess before exposure to such influences. Natural philosophers will also find an interest in these phenomena, for they finally establish for the tithonic rays two important facts, - 1st, that those rays are absorbed by ponderable bodies; and 2nd, that they become latent after the manner of heat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London and Edinburgh Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 5: New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, July December, 1834 Having observed, whilst I was using my dipping-needle with its magnetic deflector (noticed in No. 20, Third Series of the London and Edinburgh Philosophical Magazine: vol. iv. p. 81), that the ratio of the magnetic forces was not uniform, I was induced to enter upon a series of experiments for the purpose of investigating these forces. Of the various methods I adopted, I think it may be sufficient for me to describe that only which seemed on the whole to be most satisfactory and decisive. To the extremity of a horizontal beam, delicately balanced on knife-edges, a magnetic bar was attached, with its axis in a vertical direction, and a counterpoise was suspended from the other end of the beam. Immediately under the attached or suspended magnet, and in the same vertical line, another similar magnet was placed, in a glass tube, in which it could be moved freely up or down, a graduated scale having been fixed to the tube to mark the exact distance between the contiguous poles of the two magnets; and when the poles were brought very near each other, mica, paper, card-board, &c., were placed between them, 2, 4, or 8 pieces being pasted together to obtain the duplicate ratios of the distances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophical Magazine and Journal, Vol. 51: Comprehending the Various Branches of Science, the Liberal and Fine Arts, Agriculture, Manufactures and Commerce Dear Sir, - If you consider the following observations on flax-steeping Worth of a place in your valuable Magazine, I will thank you to insert them. They are the substance of answers furnished by me to inquiries made upon that subject by G. Thomson, Esq. of the Trustees Office, Edinburgh. When in Dumbartonshire in 1801, reducing to practice the process of bleaching by steam, I had a few spindles of yarn given me to prepare for weaving. There was in the sleekness of the thread something that attracted my attention. Having soaked it over-night in warm water to prepare it for steaming, I was much surprised at the change of colour, and the quantity of colouring matter dissolved in the water. It was then washed, wrung, and soaked in a weak alkaline ley, and laid for steaming over some brown linens. After steaming the usual time, the covers were taken off. The yarn was found to have attained a degree of whiteness I never had before observed under similar circumstances. It was washed in the stream so long as any colouring matter came from it, and laid to the grass for two days. I remember well the colour was such as to impress me with a strong belief that some great and important discovery might be the result of accurately following up the process this flax had gone through; and I immediately made inquiry of the lady to whom the yarn belonged, who informed me she had it from a person she named, in the neighbourhood: to this individual I made the same application, and traced the yarn to have been purchased at a Kilmarnock fair. Here the matter rested till the next season of lint pulling. I had a particular wish to trace if possible the matter to its source, and conceived the best plan would be to traverse that part of the country, from Stirling towards Kilmarnock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London and Edinburgh Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 7: New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine, Annals of Philosophy, and Journal of Science Since my return to Europe, after an absence of nearly three years, among the scientific publications that have attracted my attention, the Journal of the Geological Society of Dublin claimed particular notice. I rejoiced to perceive a growing spirit of geological inquiry in Ireland, and more especially as that spirit is understood to have been mainly excited and promoted by the Trigonometrical Survey of the island now in progress under the able conduct of Colonel Colby, R. E. It was, however, with surprise and regret that I read the following passage in the Address delivered at the First Annual Meeting of that Society by their President. Sneaking of the natural resources of Ireland, the learned author says: "Even native gold was found not many years ago in a neighbouring county in large wedges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London and Edinburgh Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 13: New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine, Annals of Philosophy, and Journal of Science; July December, 1838 It has long been a subject of regret that no institution existed in England in which young men might receive an education which should peculiarly fit them for the higher branches of the profession of a Civil Engineer. That profession is comparatively of recent origin. It has been formed by the exigencies of the times, and has had to struggle with great disadvantages. The names of Smeaton, Brindley, and others recall to our minds the difficulties which those men of masterly abilities had to encounter, in order to devise the means and create the instruments necessary to accomplish the purposes which their genius conceived. A portion of this difficulty still subsists; while the attainments necessary to enable the engineer to meet the emergencies which he has to encounter, have continually become more varied and extensive. The construction of canals, harbours and railroads, the successful application of steam to the purposes of navigation and of locomotive engines on land, the increased activity in opening out the treasures of coal and other minerals, in situations hitherto deemed inaccessible, have combined to offer a field of almost boundless extent for the exercise of talent of the highest order. In the meanwhile the profession of civil engineer has risen in the scale of national importance, in consequence of the immense capital employed under his direction.
