Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Moral, Political, and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2 Mom of the principles, and reasonings, contained in this volume, were published in a work in three volumes, called A Treatise of Human Natm'a: A work which the Author had projected before he left College, and which he wrote and published not long after. But not finding it successful, he was sensible of his error in going to the press too early, and he cast the whole anew in the following pieces, where some negligences in his former reasoning and more in the expres sion, are, he hopes, corrected. Yet several writers, who have honoured the Author's Philosophy with answers, have taken care to direct all their batteries against the juvenile work, which the Author never acknowledged, and have affected to triumph in any advantages, which, they imagined. They had obtained over it: A practicevery contraryto all rules of candour and fair-dealing, and a strong instance of those polemical artifices, which a bigotted seal thinks itself author ised to employ. Henoeforth, the Author desires, that the Mowing Pieces may alone be regarded as containing his philosophical sentiments and principles.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together Nussbaum's published papers on the relationship between literature and philosophy, especially moral philosophy. The papers, many of them previously inaccessible to non-specialist readers, deal with such fundamental issues as the relationship between style and content in the exploration of ethical issues; the nature of ethical attention and ethical knowledge and their relationship to written forms and styles; and the role of the emotions in deliberation and self-knowledge. Nussbaum investigates and defends a conception of ethical understanding which involves emotional as well as intellectual activity, and which gives a certain type of priority to the perception of particular people and situations rather than to abstract rules. She argues that this ethical conception cannot be completely and appropriately stated without turning to forms of writing usually considered literary rather than philosophical. It is consequently necessary to broaden our conception of moral philosophy in order to include these forms. Featuring two new essays and revised versions of several previously published essays, this collection attempts to articulate the relationship, within such a broader ethical inquiry, between literary and more abstractly theoretical elements.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Essays Postscript - The death of William James, which occurred when the printing of this book was already far advanced, makes me wish to express, what in the course of controversial writings does not adequately appear, the profound respect and personal esteem which I felt for him, as did all who knew him, and my deep sense of the public and private loss occasioned by his death. For readers trained in philosophy, no such assurance was required; but for those unaccus tomed to the tone of a subject in which agreement is necessarily rarer than esteem, it seemed desirable to record what to others would be a matter of course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Fiction in Literature: An Essay When I have finished "Romola," by George Eliot, the first and most obvious thing to be noted upon reflection is that the book has interested me sufficiently to cause me to read it through. If, then, encouraged by this experience, and believing a novel to be a novel, I take up "Sir Charles Grandison," I may find, after reading a portion, that I grow tired, lay the book down, and refuse to recur to it. I am bored, and the thought of continuing is irksome. Clearly, then, all tales are not interesting. Again, I am led to the perusal of M.Zola's "La Terre." My attention is held; I am presently shocked, then disgusted. I throw the pamphlet into the fire and open the windows to air the room. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Essays A yet worse feature, perhaps, because it stands in the way of reformation, is found in the dislike of stern recuperative theories generally, and the disposition to dilute truth and tone down the austere. The intellectuality of the nation has lost a great deal of its early fibre. In theology, men shrink from thorough statements and absolute punishments, as a weak nerve does from the north wind. In philosophy, even professed stu dents avoid all the deeper problems, and all the strict science. In poetry, those who read and relish Sopho.cles, Dante, and Milton, are greatly in the minority. And in art, the lofty abstract ideal has well-nigh vanished, so that in much that goes under this name, sense becomes still more sensuous, and flesh still more carnal. The true course is to look these facts in the eye, and to act accordingly. In 1802, a great poet, English to the bone, and loving his country as he loved his own flesh, denominated Eng land a fen of stagnant waters, and invoked the stern shade of Milton to raise her up, and give her manners, virtue, free dom, power. The American Republic needs to-day a similar fidelity, and a similar affection, from all her true sons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Literature: A Series of Essays And whatever may be thought of some of his opinions on matters of detail - on anonymity, for instance, or on the question whether good work is never done for money - there can be no doubt that his general view of literature, and the conditions under which it flourishes, is perfectly sound. It might be thought, perhaps, that remarks which were meant to apply to the German language would have but little bearing upon one so different from it as English. This would be a just objection if Schopenhauer treated literature in a petty spirit, and confined himself to pedantic inquiries into matters of grammar and etymology, or mere niceties of phrase. But this is not so. He deals with his subject broadly, and takes large and general views; nor can anyone who knows anything of the philosopher suppose this to mean that he is vague and feeble. It is true that now and again in the course of these essays he makes remarks which are obviously meant to apply to the failings of certain writers of his own age and country; but in such a case I have generally given his sentences a turn, which, while keeping them faithful to the spirit of the original, secures for them a less restricted range, and makes Schopenhauer a critic of similar faults in whatever age or country they may appear.
