Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Flowers can be broadly categorized by pollination syndromes, collections of floral traits that attract particular pollinators. These traits have played an important part in plant-pollinator evolution. There is debate over how important individual floral traits are in attracting particular pollinators. Genetic engineering may be able to help address this question by directly manipulating floral traits at the genetic level, in order to isolate individual traits from a pollination syndrome. Pleiotropy resulting from a single genetic change is a potentially confounding effect of this approach and must be addressed before genetic engineering may be used as an experimental approach to address questions about pollination syndromes. This research looked at the pleiotropic effects of a single gene change in Ipomoea quamoclit, a redflowering morning glory that fits in the bird pollination syndrome, that was genetically engineered to bloom blue, a color associated with bee pollination. Genetic engineering in plants may also have potential for use as a proxy for naturally occurring mutations in plants in evolutionary biology investigations into the fitness effects of single gene changes.Plants of both morphs were grown in Georgia Southern University's greenhouse. Half the plants were grown in gallon size pots. The other half were grown in four inch square pots to induce stress, as stress can enhance pleiotropic effects. Several life history traits, floral characteristics, and fruit and seed traits were recorded. An outcrossing experiment was performed to examine differences in pollen and ova fitness between the color morphs. The single genetic change to create blue-flowering I. quamoclit resulted in changes in almost every trait measured. The use of transgenic plants in pollination syndrome experiments will require more study to ensure pleiotropy does not affect traits other than the one of interest.

The role of pollination in governing mating patterns in plant populations inextricably links the evolution of pollination and mating systems. Despite the close functional link between pollination and mating, research conducted for most of this century on these two fundamental aspects of plant reproduction has taken quite separate courses. This has resulted in suprisingly little cross-fertilization between the fields of pollination biology on the one hand and plant mating-system studies on the other. The separation of the two areas has largely resulted from the different backgrounds and approaches adopted by workers in these fields. Most pollination studies have been ecological in nature with a strong emphasis on field research and until recently few workers considered how the mechanics of pollen dispersal might influence mating patterns and individual plant fitness. In contrast, work on plant mating patterns has often been conducted in an ecological vacuum largely devoid of information on the environmental and demographic context in which mating occurs. Mating-system research has been dominated by population genetic and theoretical perspectives with surprisingly little consideration given to the proximate ecological factors responsible for causing a particular pattern of mating to occur.

After finishing his comparative study and family classification of the mono cots, he devoted much energy to the acquisition and editing of family treatments for the present series. After his untimely death, Peter Goldblatt, who had worked with him, continued to handle further incoming monocot manuscripts until, in the early 1990s, his other obligations no longer allowed him to continue. At that time, some 30 manuscripts in various states of perfection had accumulated, which seemed to form a solid basis for a speedy completion of the FGVP monocots; with the exception of the grasses and orchids which would appear in separate volumes. I felt a strong obligation to do everything to help in publishing the manuscripts that had been put into our hands.
