For this phenomenological study, 48 certified middle school teachers in an eastern North Carolina rural community provided insight about homework at the middle school level by participating in a survey. The debate about homework is ongoing and often evokes a variety of passionate responses from those on both sides of the debate. The findings in this study revealed a spectrum of homework practices throughout the five middle schools. Homework is the most widely used instructional practice, yet one that is rarely reflected upon by teachers, administrators, and district leaders. In order to support learning, teachers need to make the time to review research-based practices in order to determine implications on their own classroom practices and then apply these practices to their current instruction to ensure homework plays a beneficial role in the learning process for students. Based on the findings, this study provided research for further studies and implication for practice for district leaders, administrators, and teachers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand middle school teachers' implementation of formative assessment (FA) practices. The study used a transcendental phenomenological design to understand these practices, centering on the teachers' lived experiences with the phenomenon of FA practices. Four essential questions guided the research and concentrated on middle school teachers' implementation of FA practices, perceptions about FA theory and its practices, the obstacles hindering implementation, and beneficial resources and professional learning experiences. The study focused on the lone concept of FA practices and the shared lived experiences that shaped meaning for the participants, 17 middle school teachers as co-researchers from four schools. Data were collected through a screening protocol, semi-structured individual interviews, a focus group, and school- and district-generated site documents. The data were collected, organized, analyzed, and interpreted based on Moustakas's (1994) transcendental phenomenology model and a theoretical framework based on formative assessment theory (FAT) (Black & William, 1998a, 1998b; Bloom, 1968; Marzano, 2010; Sadler, 1989; Scriven, 1967), social constructivism (Vygotsky, 1962, 1978), and experiential learning (Dewey, 1897). Four themes were identified. First, the study found that middle school teachers' implementation of FA practices is evolving with new experiences and social-cultural interactions. Second, teachers desire to know their students academically, socially, and emotionally through FA practices. Third, they need the development of common language and shared expectations for FA practices. Fourth, middle school teachers want leaders to collect their feedback and provide differentiated professional learning.

Using Spiro, Feltovich, and Coulson’s theory of cognitive flexibility as a theoretical framework, this study sought to answer the central question: What are the experiences of middle grade teachers in a standardized testing environment? Sub-questions sought to understand how and why middle school teachers adjust instructional practices in a standardized testing environment. A purposeful criterion sampling followed by snowball sampling was used to select participants with the shared lived experience of teaching in a standardized testing environment from four middle schools within a single rural southwest Virginia school district. Data was collected through a writing prompt, interviews, and focus group interviews. Data analysis occurred through epoché phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and describing the essence of the lived experience. The study revealed that teachers perceived this environment limits their ability to adjust instructional practices to meet the needs of the students, fosters feelings of resentment regarding the teacher evaluation process, and introduces concerns on the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the standardized testing environment as the continued focus of instruction in this environment is the end-of-course standardized assessment.

The theory guiding this study was connectivism (Siemens, 2005) as it addresses the concept that in the digital age knowledge is stored outside the learner and distributed knowledge as it relates to the connections formed between individuals and/or networks (Downes, 2005, 2010). Data collection methods included surveys, individual interviews, focus group interviews, and electronic journaling to provide insight into teacher professional communities and reflective practice. Data analysis was achieved through the use of the hermeneutic circle and followed van Manen’s approach. The results of this study indicated teacher collaboration was important for professional growth and the use of technology makes teacher collaboration more efficient. The hermeneutic phenomenological approach utilized in this study provided rich details to add to the body of research concerning teacher collaboration and the utilization of technology by teachers to give and seek professional support.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the flipped classroom model (FCM) when students are not coming to class prepared. The FCM is a framework in which students engage in passive learning activities at home by watching videos uploaded by their teachers so that they can engage in active learning activities in the classroom. The theory guiding this study is Vygotsky’s social-constructivism theory as it promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills through collaboration, which are very important skills required of today’s 21st century learners. The following questions were researched in this study: (a) What are the experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the FCM with student completion of homework?, (b) What are the experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the FCM with student engagement in the active learning process when homework has not been completed?, and (c) What are the experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the FCM with social collaboration among students during the learning process when homework has not been completed? Data collection included interviews, document analysis, and letter writing from 10 participants who have used the FCM for at least two years. Participants were selected from a flipped learning site on social media by completing a questionnaire. Data analysis included epoché, phenomenological reduction, and imaginative variation and then synthesized to determine the essence of the lived experience of the participants. Three themes that emerged from the data analysis were: homework completion improved and builds confidence, noncompletion of homework leads to delayed engagement, and noncompletion of homework causes insufficient collaboration within the classroom. Two outliers were identified in the area of homework completion

Book excerpt: This phenomenological research study, using three tiers of interview and focus group data, described the attitudes and perceptions of middle students towards the Character, Advisory, Remediation, Enrichment, and School Spirit (CARES) program implemented at a rural middle school in north Georgia. The CARES program is a middle school advisement program designed to better meet the needs of the adolescent learner with the intent of creating a caring learning community which supports the social, emotional, and academic needs of middle school students. Results of the study showed that the students perceived the CARES program positively. Specifically, students communicated high levels of listening, advisory, and academic support from their teachers during the CARES program. Furthermore, students felt as if the program allowed them to socialize with their peers as well as assist them in the development of good character. The students expressed a desire for higher levels of autonomy and independence, and also welcomed more opportunities to know their teachers and increase levels of trust within the teacher-student relationship. There were no significant differences in attitudes and perceptions between grade level and academic eligibility (general, special, and gifted education).

Book excerpt: "This dissertation documents, describes, and analyzes the homework practices of six teachers of languages other than English (LOTE) at the secondary level in upstate New York. Research on homework is broad and covers a wide spectrum of subtopics (Cooper, 1989). However, studies investigating teachers' homework practices are rare. This area, currently underexplored, is worthy of closer examination due to the instrumental role teachers play in the homework process. Teachers design, assign, and evaluate homework tasks; however, they receive little education on the topic (Epstein & Van Voorhis, 2012). The scarcity of homework education often drives teachers to develop homework practices uninformed by research or formal training (Corno, 1996). This research contributes to the body of knowledge on homework practices of secondary LOTE teachers and on the beliefs and systems informing them. This study uses qualitative methods, specifically in-depth interviews and classroom observations, to explore two elements of teacher homework practice. First, the study identifies, documents, and reports the homework practices of six participating teachers. Second, it explores and analyzes the beliefs and systems informing such practices. Data sources include audio recordings and transcripts of individual interviews with each of the six secondary LOTE teachers participating in the study, and field notes from classroom observations. Other documents, such as homework assignments and district documents on homework, supplement the main data sources. I coded and analyzed the data to identify salient themes, which I organized in order to construct an understanding of the homework practices and the beliefs and systems of the participating teachers. The main findings indicate that the participants' homework practices share common structures. Additionally, the study reveals that school and district policies, together with the social systems in which teachers participate, helped guide teachers' homework practices. The third and most salient finding of this research relates to teachers' belief in meaningful pedagogies, which heavily informs their homework practice. The findings of this research contribute to filling the gap in secondary teacher homework practices in LOTE"--Pages v-vi.

Book excerpt: This dissertation used a combination of case study and phenomenological research methods to investigate how individual teachers of middle school science in the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) program sustain their use of inquiry-based methods of teaching and learning. While the overall context for the cases was the AMSTI program, each of the four teacher participants in this study had a unique, individual context as well. The researcher collected data through a series of interviews, multiple-day observations, and curricular materials. The interview data was analyzed to develop a textural, structural, and composite description of the phenomenon. The Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) was used along with the Assesing Inquiry Potential (AIP) questionnaire to determine the level of inquiry-based instruction occuring in the participants classrooms. Analysis of the RTOP data and AIP data indicated all of the participants utilized inquiry-based methods in their classrooms during their observed lessons. The AIP data also indicated the level of inquiry in the AMSTI curricular materials utilized by the participants during the observations was structured inquiry. The findings from the interview data suggested the ability of the participants to sustain their use of structured inquiry was influenced by their experiences with, beliefs about, and understandings of inquiry. This study contributed to the literature by supporting existing studies regarding the influence of teachers' experiences, beliefs, and understandings of inquiry on their classroom practices. The inquiry approach stressed in current reforms in science education targets content knowledge, skills, and processes needed in a future scientifically literate citizenry.
