Book excerpt: The Lydia R. Baldwin Phelps Papers consist of correspondence, compositions, a certificate, and a biographical note. The papers chiefly reflect her activities as a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, Massachusetts from 1843-1845. In six letters to family members she discusses her studies, domestic work, daily schedule, expenses for the purchase of books, and the food, regulations and religious life at the school. She notes the occurrences of such illnesses as scarlet fever, smallpox, and "lung fever" (tuberculosis) among students, teachers and area residents and discusses her dental problems, Several of the letters mention Mary Lyon's enthusiasm for missionary work and funds raised by teachers and students to support this effort; she also comments on missionary meetings at the Seminary including one where a student who was the daughter of missionaries appeared in native costume. Letters written in June 1844 and July 1845 describe Mountain Day expeditions, one of them featuring lectures by Edward Hitchcock and a number of other Amherst College professors. An additional letter is from Martha Lyman regarding her possible enrollment in the Seminary. Fourteen compositions in the collection reflect English language instruction in writing at the school and concern subjects such as a "Tour to the North Pole," "The Natural Sciences and Mathematics compared," "Popery," and "A Mother's Love." The compositions include some comments by teachers and often reflect the importance of religion at Mount Holyoke. These papers also include a certificate from her minister M. E. White attesting to Phelps' good character and a biographical note from about 1872.

Other writings include mss. of addresses on "The Future of the English Language" and "Sir Walter Scott" and a corrected proof of remarks to graduates of Yale Law School, Class of 1898. Includes two documents relating to Phelps's service as minister to Great Britain: a privately printed pamphlet on Cyrus W. Field's banquet in Phelps's honor on July 4, 1885 in London and a copy from the London Times of Phelps's speech (1885) at the dinner to Her Majesty's Judges.

Book excerpt: Collection contains letters and journal extracts written by Phelps and his family between 1835 and 1865. The majority of the papers in this collection are correspondences written by Phelps. Phelps apparently created a journal of the letters he wrote, and several of the items in this collection appear to be pages taken from that journal. Whether they are the original letters that he sent and later gathered into a journal, or pages from a journal where he copied letters he had previously written, is unknown. The majority of the letters are to his wife, Sally, in Clay County, Missouri, during the time he was in Kirtland, Ohio, with several of the brethren of the Church. Many of the pages are just portions of letters and contain some sort of page numbering at the top, but they are not sequential. Written on the backside of some of Phelps's letters are letters written by John Corrill to his wife, Margaret. The collection also contains some original letters from other family members to Phelps, including his wife, Sally, and his son, James. There are seventeen items in total. Included in the collection are photocopies and typescripts of all the items.

Book excerpt: The Oliver Phelps Papers are comprised of one box containing correspondence written by Samuel Street (1753-1815), a merchant trader and land speculator who supplied goods to the British stationed at Fort Niagara during the Revolutionary War. In addition to Oliver Phelps, Street's correspondents include General Israel Chapin (1740-1795), George Washington's aide-de-camp and first agent for Indian Affairs in Western New York, and Reverend Samuel Kirkland (1741-1808), missionary and liason between New York State and the Iroquois in land negotiations following the Revolutionary War and founder of the Hamilton-Oneida Academy, which was to become Hamilton College. The correspondence largely concern relations with the Native Americans and land settlements. One bill for goods, issued to Chapin by Street and Colonel John Butler (of Butler's Rangers), is housed in the last folder.
