Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1985 book provides a summary of the theory and practice of the hot wire anemometer, an instrument used to measure the speed of fluid flow. Many techniques and uses of this instrument are discussed in detail. The author considers such topics as probe fouling, probe design, and circuit design, as well as the thermodynamics of heated wires and thin films. He also discusses measurements of turbulence, shear flows, vorticity, temperature, combined temperature and velocity, two-phase flows, and compressible flows for measurements in air, water, mercury, blood, glycerine, oil, luminous gases, and polymer solutions. The book concludes with a section on the pulsed wire anemometer and other wake-sensing anemometers. This book assumes a familiarity with basic fluid mechanics. However, mathematical descriptions occur near the end of each chapter thus allowing those with a limited mathematical background to make use of the practical details at the beginning of each chapter.

Book excerpt: Smol'yakov and Tkachenko's book is a very thorough and detailed survey of the response of hot wires and related trans ducers to a fluctuating flow field. Now that the electronic equipment needed for hot-wire anemometry is so easy to make or cheap to buy, transducer response is the most critical part of the subject - except for the fragility of the sensing element , for which textbooks are no remedy! We hope that this book will be useful to all students and research workers concerned with the theory or practice of these devices or the interpretation of results. Peter Bradshaw Imperial College London v Preface "The importance of experimental data and of experimentally established general properties is often underestimated in the study of turbulence . . . •. The most direct path is to use experimentally established properties as the foundation upon which models explaining these properties can be constructed. " M. D. Millionshchikov Turbulence belongs to a class of physical phenomena that are very frequently encountered in both nature and technology. It is the most common and also the most complicated form of motion of real liquids and gases. It is observed in the oceans, in the atmosphere, and in a very wide range of systems in engineering. The rational design of airplanes, rockets, ships, dams, hydroelectric plant, canals, turbines, ventilators, and many other technological systems must involve the consideration of turbulence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The external wave drag of bodies of revolution moving at supersonic speeds can be expressed either in terms of the geometry of the body, or in terms of the body-simulating axial source distribution. For purposes of deriving optimum bodies under various given condtions, it is found that the second of the methods mentioned is the more tractable. By use of a quasi-cylindrical theory, that is, the boundary conditions are applied on the surface of a cylinder rather than on the body itself, the variational problems of the optimum bodies having prescribed volume or caliber are solved. The streamwise variations of cross-section area and drags of the bodies are exhibited, and some numerical results are given. The solutions are found to depend upon a single parameter involving Mach number and radius-lenght ration of the given cylinder. Variation of this parameter from zero to infinity gives the spectrum of optimum bodies with the given condition from the slender-body result of the two-dimensional. The numerical results show that for increasing values of the parameter, the optimum shapes quickly approach the two-dimensional.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hyatt Regency Hotel, Columbus, Ohio was the venue for the 1995 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. The meeting was held jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference. Jim Peeples, of CVI, Inc., was conference chairman. Columbus is the home of the Battelle Memorial Institute, a pioneer in cryogenic materials development; the home of CVI, Inc., and Lake Shore Cryotronics, Inc., two leading manufacturers of cryogenic equipment; and it is the home of Ohio State University, where research on liquid helium has long been conducted. The program consisted of 315 CEC papers, nearly the same number as for CEC-91. This was the second largest number of papers ever submitted to the CEC. Of these, 252 papers are published here, in Volume 41 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. Once again the volume is published in two books. This volume includes a number of photographs taken during the awards lunch on July 20, 1995. Photographs have often been taken during the conferences, but they have never been used. The pictures are of the awardees, the conference chairs, and the organizers. They are distributed through out the books on pages that would otherwise have been blank. The pictures can be found on the following pages: 28, 232, 334, 536, 640, 826, 990, 1032, 1202, 1462,1682,1888, and 1994.
