Book excerpt: The study area is comprised of 14 adjacent lots totaling approximately 6.7 acres. A very thorough surface and subsurface study revealed that there are no undisturbed cultural resources in the 14 lots. The proximity of prehistoric site SC-53 probably accounts for the isolated find of a fine stone axe. Estate La Grande Princesse and its French predecessors, of which the study area was undoubtedly part, had their estate complexes relatively far away, so that no historical remains were found, whether on the surface or under it. No further archaeological work is recommended.

Book excerpt: A Phase IA cultural resources survey was conducted on a 20-acre, more-or-less, proposed subdivision in Estate Prosperity, Northside B Quarter, St. Croix. The dense vegetation impeded a very close scrutiny at the level of a Phase IA cultural resources survey, but informants and record of former surveys indicates that the only cultural resource is a masonry windmill tower and (possible) obscured ancillary features. The masonry windmill tower has its walls collapsed on the north, and no artifacts were visible on its inside or outside surfaces. The windmill tower was erected between 1754 and 1767, but no foundation stone was encountered to date it more precisely. It is recommended that the area around the windmill tower be preserved from development, and that a Phase IB cultural resources survey is effected on the archaeological sensitive area to determine whether further resource recovery is warranted.

The terrestrial aspect included a 100% surface reconnaissance , and teh submerged aspect included remote sensing in transects with interval (50') excavations . Both the terrestrial and the submerged studies failed to locate significant cultural resources. The only signs of humans, other than modern garbage and a few scattered historical pottery fragments, were some conch shells with apical perforations behind the mangrove swamp on the boundary between the two plots--- these are as likely contemporary as ancient, and lack associated artifacts. No further archaeological work is recommended.

This Plot comprises 1.753 acres within what before was 1803 was more often known as Butler's Bay Estate. It includes the ruins of a sugar factory occupied perhaps between 1780-1886, and ancillary ruins. Earlier remain, while likely to have been present, were probably destroyed by the historical activities connected with the sugar factory. Modern activities such as bulldozing/landscaping and looting by collectors have spoiled much of the archaeological value of the ruins within the study area. The renovation proposed by the developers is in general recommended as a sympathetic way to deal with this historical property. More archaeological work is not deemed to be cost-effective.

Book excerpt: The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has occupied a salient position in the history of eastern North America for at least the past 1000 years. Initially the species occupied a prominant niche in the prolific web of life that existed throughout its former occurrence area; millions of pounds of salmon were produced annually from the freshwater streams between New York and Ungava - a resource that was a principal food source for the Amerindian cultures which shared its range. In a chronological and cumulative way, the salmon became an increasingly important factor in both the domestic and commercial life of the developing colonies; it provided a recreational outlet for the sportsman, and evolved as a principal object of intellectual and scientific investigation. The documented specifics of the salmon's history, however, are largely comprised of repetitive instances of overexploitation, careless destruction of stocks and their environment, and ineffectual conservation actions. Despite the species' former importance, its more recent history is one of declining presence, and its destiny appears to be extinction. By documenting this story of discovery, exploitation, and decline, the urgent need for the employment of sound resource management practices to preserve the salmon is emphasized. The buildings have been renovated unsympathetically in the past, and there is no reason to prevent their being refurbished again for modern use. It was found that disturbance in the vicinity of the two buildings is such that further archaeological work will be very unrewarding.
